EDWARD I'IOLDGATE, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
WAISTBAND-ADJUSTER FOB GARMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led June 9, 1908.
Patented April 13, 1909.
Serial No. 437,584.
To all'w'iom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWARD HOLDGAT'E, a subject of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing'at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vaistband-Adjusters for Garments, of whichy the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in waist adjusters for garments, being directed particularly to a means whereby the waistband-of a garment may be quickly and conveniently adjusted about the person of the wearer in a manner to avoid the bunching of the material incident to the ordinary method of adjustment.
Asis well understood the usual adjustment of the waistband of a garment to snugly fit the waist of the wearer results in a bunching or gathering of the material at some point in the waistband with the effect, in overgarments, to present an unsightly appearance, and in undergarments, to interfere with the proper set of the overgarments and at the same time present an uncomfortable proj ection.
It is the main object of the present invention to provide a means of adjustment for the waistband which will entirely avoid any obstructive gathering of the material at any point, the construction insuring a smooth even appearance and practically equal thickness o the waistband throughout the waist of the latter when adjusted.
The invention will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in whicht Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a garment illustrating the application of my invention to the waistband thereof. Fig. 2 is a to edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view simi ar to Fig. 2, illustrating the movements of the parts 1n the adjustment of the waistband.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 1 represents a garment having a waistband 2, these parts being intended to represent any desired form of garment to which a waistband may be attached.
In carrying out the present improvement I sucure either to the outer surface or between the folds or plies of the waistband a strip 3, which is of substantial length and of comparatively flexible material. In connection with this detail I prefer that the strip 3 be of metallic construction, though it is obvious that the functions of the invention would be mainly subserved by making the strip of whalebonc, Celluloid or any similar material. The ends of the strip are formed with openings 4 and 5 respectively, and the registering portions of the waistband are formed with similar openings, eyelets being used if dcsircd to finish the openings, as shown. '.l`o the outer surface of the waistband in each direction beyond the end of the strip 3 is secured an eye member', as shown, one of said members, as 6, being arranged adjacent one end of the strip, while the other of said members, as T, is arranged adjacent the opposite end of the strip.
In connection with the plate and eye members I utilize drawstrings S and 9, preferably in the form of tapes which are of sufficient length to encircle the waist of the wearer after the adjustment of the waistband and permit a tying or other connection of the meeting ends. The tape 8 is terminally connected to one of the eye members, as 6, and extended therefrom to and through the relatively remote opening 5 in the strip 3 of the waistband, the tape being preferably passed through the opening from the outer surface of the waistband, as shown in Fig. l. The tape 9 is terminally connected to the remaining eye member, as 7, then passed lengthwise the waistband, preferably on the inner side of the latter, then to and through the first eye member 6, and then projected lengthwise the outer side of the waistband to and through 'the opening 4l, the terminal of the tape 9 thus depending on the inner side of the waistband.
After placing the garment in position, the terminals of the tapes S and 9 are drawn upon with the effect, as will be plain from Fig. 3, to draw those portions of the waistband included between the ends of the strip 3 and the adjacent eye members inwardly between the ends of the strip., the respective eye members being caused to approach each other. The movement described will be continued until the waistband is snugly fitted about the waist of the wearer, in which position the material of the waistband included between the respective ends of the strip and the eye member will be smoothly arranged against the inner surface of that portion of thefwaistband carrying the strip7 as shown. The continued pull upon the tapes 8 and 9 alter the desired adjustment, Will cause the strip 3 to bend longitudinally to Conform to the adjusted curvature of the waistband, thereby snuglyT and smoothly fitting the otherwise loose portions of the waistband in position. The terminals ot' the tapes are then united, by tying or the like, and the adjustment is oomplete. The outer surface of the waistband, when adjusted, presents smooth and practically unbroken surface about which the belt or outer garment may be accurately fitted, while at the same time uncomfortable or unsightly gathering of the waistband at the points of adjustment is avoided.
The invention is designed to be applied to garments oi' any type in which adjustment of the waistband is desirable, though it is particularly advantageous in connection With skirts.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new, is:-
'lhe combination with a garment Waistband, ol a comparatively rigid strip formed with end openings and secured to the Waist band, an eye member secured to the Waist= band beyond each end ol' the strip, a tape secured to one eye member and passed through the relatively remote opening in the strip, a second tape passed through the remaining eye member, to and through the first mentioned eye member and to and through the relatively remote opening in the strip.
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
EDWARD HOLDGATE.
