WEARING-APPAREL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1913.
Application filed September 14, 1912. Serial No. 720.437.
. or underskirts forwomen, and it has forits object to provide a garment adaptable, by a slight adjustment, to fit women having waist measurements varying from the normal smaller sizes to the normal larger sizes, whereby a dealer in such garments is relieved of the necessity of carrying in stock a wide range of sizes, and the invention consists in combining in the waist band of the garment a strip or strips of elastic, and plaits in peculiar arrangement as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a petticoat constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing two of the plaits.lct out to increase the measurement of the waist band. Fig. 3 is an elevation from the front wvith aportion of the waist band removed.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout. all .the views.
--As is well known in the trade dealers in ready niade'wearing' apparel are now compelled to keep in stock a wide range of sizes of each garment in order to be in a position to meet the requiren'ients of their customers, with the result that the stock is burdened with garments of unusual sizes, smaller or larger than the normahand for which the demand is infrequent.
' Now, it is the purpose of this invention to changes therein to adapt it to fit the custonier.
IIl carrying out my invention I secure shot-t lengths of elastics A in or to the waist band of the garment C by stitching the same hereto while the elastics are .in their extended or stretched position, the stitching being made along the top and bottom of the elastics so that the material of the waist band or garment contracts into small folds-a when the elastics are released. At one or the other end of the elastic at each side of the garment and, preferably, at that end adjacent the placket of the garment, the waist band is formed with a series of plaits D, made by folding the material of the waist band on itself and stitching the same at top and bottom, so 'that the folds lie flat, one on the other, and add but little to the thickness of the waist band. The folds or-plaits may be of any desired or preferred width, and the number in each series may be regulated according to the number of sizes the waist band is designed to be adapted to fit but the number of plaits in each series should be the same, so that the placket shall maintain the same relative'position at all'times. In the present instance I have shownthe waist bandformed with six ((5) plaits, arranged three (3) at each side of the garment, and the plaits are each one-half inch in width. Thus, supposing the waist band to be twenty three inches, and it is desired to adapt it to a waist. measuring twentymine inches, all that is necessary is to let out, by cutting the threads, one plait at each side thus increasing the measurement two inches and adapting the garment to a waist measuring twenty-nine inches, the additional four inches required being given by the stretch of the elastics. With three plaits on each side and each plait one-half inch in width it will be seen that the letting out of all .the plaits will increase the length of the waist band sixinches to which is added the stretch of the elastic, two inches for each elastic, making a total increase of ten inches and adapting the gar-mt .t to a size thirtythree waist.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
1. A waistband for wearing apparel hav-' y v I ing plaited sections formed therein, and ment of the band may be increased by reelastics arranged in the length of said waistleasing the plaits. i 10 band, whereby the measure fient of the band In testimony whereof, I afix my sigma may be increased by letting out the plaits. nture, in the presence of two Witnesses.
2. A waist band for wearmg apparel hav- MILTQN DRYFOOS. ing elastics secured therein, and a series of Witnesses: 1 plaits of uniform width formed in said band J. REGHSGH'LED, at each side thereof, whereby the measure-- 7 MORTON WALLACH.
