Description
I. ROHRBERG;
GARMENT SUSPENDERS. APPLICATION FILED SEPTA], m7.
Patented Mar. 12, 1918.
TTNTTE @TATEd ISAAC BOI-IBBERG, 6F JERSEY CITY, NEW JEBEEEY.
GABMENT-SUSPENDER Application filed September 17, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Isaac Ronnnnno, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 145 Montgomery street, in the city of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
T he invention provides a garment supporter which is adjustable within certain limits and embodying a minimum number of parts, the novelty residing chiefly in the adjusting means, whereby the ends of the straps are reinforced and provided with buttonhole tabs to be grasped when making adjustments and to be engaged with or disengaged from' buttons provided on the straps at di iferent points in the length thereof.
The invention is set forth in detail in the following description and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of suspenders embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a castoii or suspender end and part of a shoulder strap showing the parts on a larger scale;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a button hole tab before the" same has its ends folded into final shape;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 having the ends of the tab folded; and
Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal section of the button hole tab and part of the strap attached thereto, the parts being illustrated on a larger scale.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The suspenders comprise shoulder straps 1 and tabs or suspender ends 2. The shoulder straps cross near one end and are secured at the point of crossing and are provided with tabs 3 in which are formed button holes for engagement with the buttons usually provided at the rear of the waist band of trousers.
Each of the tabs or suspender ends 2 is connected with a shoulder strap by means of a buckle 4 in which is formed a plurality of parallel slots for the reception of the several straps. The tab or suspender end cornprises relatively narrow straps or tapes 5 and 6. The straps 5'and 6 are provided at their free ends with button holes to make Specification of Letters Ilzhatent.

engagen'ient with the buttons generally provided upon the waist band of trousers near the front thereof. The end of the strap or tape 5, after passing through one of the slots of the buckle 4, is stitched or. otherwise with a button hole tab 7 which is constructed and attached thereto in a peculiar manner. A plurality of buttons 8 are at tached to the shoulder strap at different points in its length to provide for adjustment of the suspenders as occasion may demand. Each of the shoulder straps passes through a slot of the buckle; 4 and its end i is adjustably connected to the main portion of the strap by means of thebutton hole tab 7 and the buttons 8. Thi arrangement provides for simplicity of construction and enables a minimum number, of parts being employed in the formation of the article.
Each of the button hole tabs 7 is formed at opposite ends with separated parts for a purpose presently to be described. In the preferred formation of the button hole tab its middle portion 9 is of double thickness, the parts being interwoven to form a unitary structure. The end portions of the tab are separated and present single plies as indicated most clearly in Fig. 3. The end of the button hole tab attached to the shoulder strap is designated as the upper or inner end, whereas the opposite end of the tab is designated as the outer end thereof. The inner end of the tab 7 is formed with two wings or flaps 10 which are adapted to receive between them the extremity of the shoulder strap, such wings or flaps 10 having terminal portions folded inwardly as indicated at 11, thereby preventing the formation of raw edges which would tend to fray. After the terminal portion of the shoulder strap has been received between the folded ends of the wings or flaps 10, it is secured by stitching or in any other desired manner. The outer end of the tab 7 is folded inwardly from opposite sides as indicated at 12, such folds being on diagonal lines with the result that the outer end of the tab is pointed. In the preferable formation of the tab 7, its outer end is tubular as indicated most clearly in Fig. 3, and such tubular portion is folded inwardly from opposite sides and such folds result in the formation of a plurality of thicknesses whereby the outer end of the tab is considerably thicker than the remaining portion with the result that a firm grip is enabled to be had upon the tab when manipulating the same to adjust the suspenders or to engage the tab 7 with or disengage it from any one of the buttons 8.
By forming the tab 7 separate from the straps 1, it is possible to construct the same in a manner to withstand the wear and usage to which it is subjected when in service and moreover, such tab may be readily replaced when desired and it is possible to construct the tab of material different from the shoulder strap.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be understood that the invention provides a garment supporter of the suspenders type which may be easily and quickly adjusted as required, and which will conform and readily adapt itself to strain without interfering with the various movements of the body, the article in its formation embodying the smallest number of parts possible consistent with strength and provision for adjustment to meet various needs.
What I claim is:
1. A garment supporter including a strap, and a tab consisting of a piece of material of substantially uniform thickness divided at one end to form a pair of flaps or wings to receive the strap and provided at the other end with a tubular portion folded in wardly to form a relatively thick outer terminal portion;
2. A garment supporter including a strap, and a tab consisting of a piece of material of substantially uniform thickness divided at one end to form a pair of flaps or wings to receive the strap and provided at the other endwith a tubular portion folded inwardly at opposite sides to provide a tapered outer terminal portion of increased thickness to enable it to be readily grasped.
3. A garment supporter including a strap and a tab consisting of a piece of material of substantially uniform thickness divided at the inner portion to form two wings or flaps and the latter being folded inwardly on themselves to provide thickened portions receiving and secured to the strap, the other end of the tab being tubular and folded inwardly at opposite sides to form a tapered outer terminal portion of increased thickness to enable it to be readily grasped.
In testimony whereof, I have afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC ROHRBERG.
