WAISTBAND'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 28, 190s.
Ap-p1ication iled December 3, 1907. Serial No. 404,898.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON LINDY, a citizen of the United States,`residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Waistband, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to waist bands adapted for use in connection with Womens, misses and childrens skirts, petticoats and drawers.
The object of the invention is to provide an article of this character that may be readily manufactured and sold, and which shall be adapted for ready attachment to either of the class of garments-above enumerated, and shall be of a contour that will adapt it to t the form of the wearer without the employment of darts or gatherings, and which shall be capable Of longitudinal adjustment throughout an extended length of each end, thus to adapt one of the articles for use in connection with garments having different lengths of waist bands, the adjustment of the band being such as to obviate the formation of puckerings or protuberances, whereby the objection to the use of the Ordinary drawing string, heretofore employed, is positively obviated. l
With the above and other objects in View, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in a waist band embodying a multi-ply structure constructed of any preferred fabric, that is to say, of ordinary cotton, silesia, or cambric, or a combination of these fabrics or of the same fabri as the garment with which it is combined. The article will be given a con tour to cause it closely to fit the waist of the wearer, and is provided at each end with a series of transverse slits or eyes through which are threaded fiat lacings, the inner ends of which are secured between the plies of the band. The arrangement of the lacings and of the eyelets is such that when plaits are formed at the ends of the band for the purpose of shortening its length, such plaits will lie flat and thus not present bulges or raised surfaces at the waist line of the garment. Owing to the arrangement of the eyelets or slots, and ofthe employment of fiat lacings, when the ends of the band are plaited, for the purpose above stated, the line of draft on the lacings in tying them together.
will be in approximately straight lines, so
that there will bano tendency to disturb or separate the folds of the various plaits.
The invention consists further in certain features of novelty of construction of a waist band, as will be hereinafter fullydescribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a waist band constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through one end portion thereof taken on the line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a similar view through the other end portion thereof, taken on the line 3-3, Fig l.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the right hand end portion of the band shown in Fig. 1, looking from the inner side.
At each end'portion of the band is a series of transversely disposed eyes 2, which may be formed by Ordinary button holes, or by the employment of oblong or fiat eyelets, and through these eyes are threaded lacings 3 that are flat and carry at their outer ends tips 4, the inner ends of the lacings being secured between the plies of the band at 5.
Where the end portions of the band are to .be shortened the same are folded to form a plurality of plaits 6, and these are held in position by means of the lacings 3, and will ie flat against the waist of the wearer, so that any ill-fitting of the dress waist band will be prevented.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that while the im rovements herein defined are sim le in ciaracter, they will be thoroughly e icient for the purposes designed, and may be carried into effect withnesses as required, and is k out the employment of any particular form of machinery for the purpose.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed is zl. As a new article of manufacture, a Waist band provided. at its end portions with a plurality of oriiices, and lacings threaded through the oriiices and permanently secured at their inner ends to the hand whereby a series of transverse plaits may be formed.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a multi-ply waist band provided at its end portions with a plurality of transversely disposed orices, and flat lacings threaded through the orifices and having their inner ends secured. between the plies of the hand. In testimony that l claim the foregoing my own, l have hereto al'lxed my signaturi` in the presence of two witnesses.
SOLOMON LlNDY.
