LEGGIN Gr.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3,1912.
Application filed January 14, 1911. Serial No. 602,729.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Dn ROY 'Aus'rm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wearing apparel, and more particularly to leggings and gaiters.
It is the object of my invention to provide in a legging or gaiter an improved means for fastening and adjusting the foot-strap, whereby the same may be tightened and loosened from a point above the lower margin of the gaiter or legging body.
A further object of my invention is to provide in combination with the foot-strap adjusting means, means for staying or stiffsuing a legging vertically so as to prevent wrinkling thereof.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a foot-strap fastening having no thickened or projectingparts, such as are made by the common buckle fastenings, so that the legging may be worn inside of overshoes without discomfort to the wearer.
A construct-ion embodying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
in which Figure 1 1s a side view of a legging provided with my foot-strap ad uster and sidestay, portlons being broken away to show.
the stay, Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the plane of the line w-m of Fig. 1, and Fig.3 is a partial longitudinal section on the plane of the line g of Fig. 1.
In the construction shown, I provide a legging-body l of ordinary form and material, made with overlapping side- flaps 2 and 3 so as to open at the side. The edge of the outer flap 3 is folded inwardly and seamed longitudinally only, so as to form at the edge of said flap a hem inclosing a at the top and bottom. The foot-strap 4 has one end thereof attached to the legging-body at its lower margin in the usual way. The other end of the foot-strap is inserted in the lower end of the vertical passage through the flap 3, and is connected with the end of a stay 5 slidably disposed in said passage. The said stay is shown as made of wire bent to undulating form so as to'comprise a series of alternately disposed loops or eyes.
short strap 6 is connected with the upper end of the stay and extends out of the upper end of the vertical. passage, being provided at its end with a disk or plate 7 larger than the passage through the flap, so as to form a stop to prevent the strap being drawn entirely within the passage. at suitable intervals are secured buckles S, and in the outer part of the flap 3, opposite each of said buckles, are provided the eyelets 9. In the inner fold of the flap are openings corresponding to the eyelets 9, so that the tongues of the buckles may be passed through said openings and the eye lets, and thus intersect the vertical passage through the flap. WVhen the buckle tongues are thus passed through the flap theyalso pass throughthe loops or eyes in the stay and thus serve to prevent vertical movement of the stay within the passage.
In putting on the legging, the same being open at the side, the legging-body may be held by the top and the foot-strap pushed down with the foot to a position such as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, so that the toe may be readily passed through the strap. After the legging is in proper position around the foot, the foot-strap is drawn up tight by pulling upon the strap 6 and thus drawing the stay 5 up through the vertical passage and pulling the end of the footstrap into the passage. The tongues of the buckles 8 are then passed through the openings thereforin the flap 3, and through the loops or eyes in the stay, thus simultaneously closing the side opening. of the legging and securing the stay and foot-strap in adjusted positions. In removing the legging, the buckle tongues are withdrawn from the openings through the flap 3, after which the foot-strap may be loosened by pulling upward on the legging body, after which the strap may be easily passed off over the toe.
It may be noted that by the formation of the stay the same has two sets of loops or eyes through which the buckle tongues may be passed to hold the stay against longitudinal movement, and each set of eyes in the stay corresponds with the location of one of the two eyelets 9 shown as provided for each buckle. Thus a certain degree of adjustability is provided for in the circumference of the legging-body when secured upon the leg. It may also be noted that the fastenings of both the legging body and foot-strap are situated considerably above On the flap 2 the lower margin of the body so as to be removed from mud, snow or the like, and also being more convenient to reach. Thus the wearer is enabled to put on and remove the legging without soiling the hands, and without the fastenings being made diflicult to operate by being clogged with foreign matter. It may be further noted that by the construction shown the lower part of the legging is left smooth and flat, having no projecting portions which would prevent its being worn with comfort inside of overshoes.
It will be apparent that various modifications of the structure shown may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is best indicated by the claims following.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a legging, a legging-body, a footstrap, a stay slidably disposed in one side of the body and connected with one end of the foot-strap, and means for connecting the stay and body in various adjusted positions.
2. In an article of the class described, a legging-body, means forming a vertical passage at one side of the legging-body, a stay slidably disposed in the passage, a footstrap having one end connected with the stay and the other end fixedly connected with the legging-body, and means for securing the stay at adjusted posit-ions with relation to the legging-body.
8. In an article of the class described, a legging-body having overlapping side-flaps, buckles secured upon one of said flaps and having tongues adapted to be passed through openingsin the other flap to secure the flaps together, a stay slidably disposed in the latter flap and having eyes through which the buckle tongues may be passed, and a foot-strap having one end fixedly secured to the legging-body and the other end connected with the slidable stay.
4:. In an article of theclass described, a legging-body, means forming a vertical passage at one side of the legging-body, a stay slidably disposed in said passage, a footstrap having one end connected with the stay, and means intersecting the vertical passage and stay to secure the stay against longitudinal movement relative to the leggingbody. 4
5. In an article of the class described, a leggingbody, means forming a vertical passage at one side of the legging-body, an element connected with the legging-body at the side thereof opposite said vertical passage and extending therefrom below the lower margin of the body, the said element entering the lower end of the vertical passage, traversing the same and passing out at the upper end thereof, means for preventing the withdrawal of the element from the passage, and means for detachably connecting said element and the legging-body at a point remote from the lower margin of the body.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed by name in the presence of two witnesses,
DE ROY AUSTIN. WVitnesses D. O. BARNELL, J. A. NIEMANN.
