To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIZABETH A. GLEA- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 2O East Forty-sixth street, New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaiters, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.

This invention relates to improvements in gaiters used as a covering for warmth and to improve the appearance of a shoe; and the objects of the invention are first, to improve the appearance of the gaiter, second,-

to avoid use of a buckle upon the under strap, third, to provide lacing instead of buttons and, fourth, to provide means for holding the gaiter about the ankle to facilitate lacing.

I attainthe object of the invention by the means shown in the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gaiter with one corner turned up to expose the snap-button. Fig. 2 is a view of the device opened, showing the inside.

The gaiter A is provided with the division at the back of the ankle. And the sides or edges of such division are lettered respectively a; and Z2; said edges are provided with eyelets c along the edges of the division to receive a lace e. Along the whole length of the inner side of the edge b a tongue or fly f is provided and arranged to lie beneath the inner marginal edges and secured by stitching g. The lower end of the tongue f is provided with one-half of a snap-button 71. to coperate with the other half, which is secured upon the lower portion of the edge a of the gaiter. An elastic under strap y' is provided to keep the gaiter normally in position when in use.

By providing the gaiter with a division at the back of the ankle, I secure a great advantage in manufacturing, as it is not necessary to make rights or lefts and only one 4set of patterns and dies are necessary, thus lowering the cost of manufacture; and furthermore the gaiter presents a neater appearance when worn.

Diiculty is often experienced when the wearer desires to put on a gaiter by the inconvenience in holding the two sides together for lacing. In my device I have propensate for any variation in the size of the ankle of the wearer; but in my invention by providing a lace in place of buttons, I am able to compensate for any of the aforesaid variations by tightening or loosing the lace as may be required, and I am therefore able to dispense with a buckle and may make the under strap of one piecer of elastic fabric. This is a great advantage as the buckle when on a gaiter in use catches in the clothes, collects dirt and in general does not look well and is also an inconvenience when the gaiter is washed.

It is obvious that simplicity and neatness are important features in an article of this character and my gaiter is therefore a great improvement in the art.

Now having described my improvements I claim as my invention- 1. A gaiter divided at the back from top to bottom, a lace for securing the opposite edges of the division together, a snap fastener member secured to one of the said edges at the lower end thereof and a cooperating snap fastener member secured to the lower end of the opposite edge for holding the two edges together to facilitate lacing.

2. A gaiter divided at the back from top to bottom, a lace for securing the opposite edges of the division together, a tongue arranged to lie beneath the inner marginal lfaces of the gaiter adjacent said division when the edges of the division are laced together, one edge of the tongue being stitched to one of the said marginal faces, a snap fastener member secured to the other of said marginal faces at the lower end thereof, and a coperating snap fastener member secured to the lower end of said tongue.

3. A gaiter divided at the back from top to bottom, a lace for securing the opposite edges of the division together, a tongue arranged 'tolie beneath the inner marginal faces of the gater adjacent said division 1when the edges of the division are laced together7 one edge of the tongue being stitched to one of the said marginal faces, a snap fastener member secured to the other of said marginal faces at the lower end thereof, and a cooperating snap fastener member secured to the lower end of said tongue, and an elastic under strap to hold the gaiter normally in position When in use. 10
