Description

No. 884,858.. PATENTED APR. 14, 1908.
0. RINGWALD. GARMENT SUPPORTER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 29, 1906.
- I z'i yzyaZd Q/Vihmona UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES RINGWALD, OF OWEGO, NEW YORK.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES RINGWALD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Owego, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to garment supporters, and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the waist-bands of trousers and drawers, showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the connecting member detached. Fig. 3 is a view of the bodkin or needle for forming the eyelet holes, showing in section an eyelet arranged at the rear thereof for insertion in the hole formed thereby.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2, respectively, denote the waist-bands of a pair of trousers and a pair of drawers, which are provided, in a plane one above the other, with keepers or fastening members in the form of eyelets 3 and 4. A connecting member 5 is provided to engage said eyelets and fasten the drawers to the trousers. This is prefer ably formed of wire bent to form a hook 6 with an outwardly curved terminal to permit said hook to pass through the eyelet 4 and a right angular stem 7 projecting straight and forwardly from the upper end of the shank of the hook to pass to the front of the trousers through the eyelet 3. The free end of the stem is threaded to receive a threaded button 8, which fastens it in position. Any desired number of these fastening devices may be used, the same being arranged at intervals around the waist-band to effectively secure and support the drawers in position.
In application, the hooks are first passed through the eyelets on the drawers, after which the stems are passed through the eyelets on the trousers, and finally the buttons are applied to hold the parts connected. The buttons may be of any desired ornamental character to present a neat and attractive appearance, and, if desired, may be Specification of Letters Patent.

fixed to the stems and sewed to the trousers, thus making the connecting devices permanent attachments to the trousers.
A bodkin or needle 9 will preferably be provided with each set of the fastenings to enable the purchaser to cleanly and neatly form openings in the trousers and drawers for application of the eyelets. This bodkin is tapered or wedge-shaped, its rear end being of sufficient size to permit the eyelet to be held thereagainst, as shown in Fig. 3 to follow the same through the opening formed thereby.
The advantages of my invention will be appreciated, it being apparent that the fastenings will hold up the drawers in an effect ive manner and will be concealed from View in use, thus enabling them to be employed when a shirt-waist is worn and suspenders dispensed with.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
The combination with a pair of trousers and a nether garment, of a garment supporter comprising an eyelet secured upon the waistband of the trousers, an eyelet secured upon the waistband of the nether garment below the eyelet on the trousers, said eyelets being relatively arranged for cooperation in pairs, a connecting member for coupling the respective pairs of eyelets, said member com prising a strand of wire bent to form a straight unobstructed stem having a screw threaded end to extend through the eyelet of the trousers and also bent downwardly and upwardly to provide a hook with a curved upper end which serves to permit the hook to engage the cooperating eyelet on the nether garment, said hook having its shank extending vertically between the garments and bearing against the inner flange of the trousers eyelet for engagement with said eyelet, and a button removably engaging the projecting screw threaded end of the stem and serving to rest against the outer flange of the trousers eyelet, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I afIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES RINGWALD.
