APPLICATION FILED JULY 17.1916.

RUTH IE. DAUGHERTY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GARMENT-STAYING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1L5, this.
Application filedl J uly 17, 1916. Serial No. 109,637.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, Burn E. DAUGHERTY, a citizen of the United-States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Staying Devices, of which the following is declared to be full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to garment staying devices, and its principal object is to provide simple means for holding the neck portion or neck-band of a ladys waist against the back of the neck of the wearer. It is well-known that waists made of sheer material and made in accordance with the prevailing style, are apt to sag at the back of the neck, thus giving an untidy appearance to the wearer. This is particularly so where the garment is cut low at the front, as is the mode at the present time. The purpose of this invention. is to hold the neck portion snug against the neck of the wearer without placing any undue strain upon the garment, and by means that are completely hidden from view. The invention consists therefore, in the several novel features hereinafter fully set forth and particularly defined in the claim.
The invention is illustrated in the drawing accompanying this specification, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of a simple form of the invention (partly in dotted lines) showing it in use upon a garment, and Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the device alone.
Referring to said drawing, 10, designates a ladys shirtwaist made of sheer material, and having the usual neck portion 11, and the usual front 12, having the V-shaped openin at the throat. The reference character, E, designates the garment staying de vice as a whole, and in Fig. 1, said device is shown as attached to the underside of the waist at two points near the neck portion, and also attached at its lower end to a waistband l-l, or some portion of the wearers undergarments.
The device comprises an elastic strap, which may be made of very light elastic material, and said elastic strap comprises two members 15,15, which are formed by folding the band upon itself at the middle, and to the bottom end thereof is secured a fastener member of some well-known form as, for instance, a small safety pin 16, and to the upper end of each of said members 15, is secured another fastener member, as, for instance, a hook 17. The device may be made of various lengths to suit the users, and in use, the hooks 17, are secured in the material of the waist on the underside thereof and adjacent the collar bone or shoulders of the person. The fastener member 16, at the lower end is then attached to some portion of the users undergarments at a point below the V shaped opening in the waist, but far enough down to place tension upon the elastic members 15. It is perfectly obvious that tension applied in a downward direction to the upper part of the waist near the neck portion thereof, will result in holding the neck portion of the waist in place against the neck of the wearer.
The entire device is hidden from view when in use, and gives to the waist a neat and pleasing appearance, preventing the usual sagging of the neck portion upon the back of the wearer. It is to be understood that its use is not to be limited to shirt waists, but that it may be used upon the waist portions of other garments, such as robes, gowns, dresses and the like.
More or less variations of the exact de tails of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention, and I desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact details shown and described, but intend in the following claim to point out all of the invention disclosed herein.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination with a waist having a V-shaped front opening, an elastic member comprising two branches diverging from a common point at the bottom and underlying said waist adjacent said front openin securing means at the lower end of said elastic member, and securing means at the upper ends of the branches thereof, engaging with said waist at points adjacent the V-shaped opening and near the top thereof, whereby the neck portion of said waist is held snugly against the neck of the wearer.
RUTH E. DAUGHERTY.
