ABRAHAM GOLDBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 211, ram.
Application filed October 6, 1911. Serial No. 653,103.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAHAM GOLDBERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of hilanhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Garment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to garments, and has reference more particularly to a skirt having a placket opening, a closing member for said opening, and common means for drawing the edges of said opening together to adjust the garment to the wearer and for securing the closing member over the placket opening.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective garment such as a skirt, a petticoat or the like, which is capable of a wide range of adjustment to adapt the garment for use by wearers of different sizes, in which all shirring or gathering of the material at the waist of the garment is avoided, despite the fact that the garment can be adjusted to different sizes, and which is so constructed that the placket opening will at all times remain securely closed when the garment is being worn.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a support constituting an embodiment of my in vention; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing certain of the parts in difierent positions; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the skirt as adjusted when worn, with the placket opening closed.
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that while the invention is particularly useful as applied to womens skirts or petticoats it can also be advantageously employed with other garments of like nature. Certain of the details of construction shown for example herewith, form no part of the invention and can be varied in accordance with individual preference and special conditions, without deviating from the essence of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
7 Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown in Fig. 1 a skirt 10, of customary construction, having at the rear a placket opening 11, the edges of which are normally separated. At the upper edge, the skirt is provided with the usual waistband 12. Preferably the skirt at the sides has additional openings or slits 13, to facilitate the putting on and taking ofl' of the garment. Secured to the rear of the skirt, below the waist, is a placket closing member 14 preferably in the form of a flap having at the edge an open-ended sleeve or pocket 15. This is provided intermediate its ends, and preferably at the center thereof, with an opening 16. I employ a pair of securing and adjusting straps or tapes 17, which are attached by sewing or in any other suitable manner at the upper end of the edges of the placket opening. The straps are crossed through the opening 16 in opposite directions, and into the pocket 15, projecting from the open ends of the latter.
The waistband 12 of the skirt, at each side of the placket opening is provided with a plurality of eyelets, hooks or other fastening elements 18, adapted to be engaged with 00- operating fastening elements 19 mounted at the extremities of the straps 17. The latter are provided with adjusting buckles 20, by means of which their effective lengths can be varied, and are preferably fashioned from elastic material. By drawing upon the straps in opposite directions when the garment is being placed upon the wearers body, the edges of the placket opening will be drawn toward each other until the skirt conforms to the wearer and fits snugly at the waist. The ends of the straps are then fastened at one or the other of the elements 18, and the closing flap is thereby securely positioned over the placket opening. By pro viding a plurality of fastening members 18 and fashioning the straps of elastic material the garment can be easily adjusted to difi'erent dimensions within comparatively wide limits.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A skirt having a waistband and a placket opening, a closing flap for said opening and provided with an open-ended pocket having an opening intermediate its ends, crossed straps secured respectively to the opposite edges of said placket opening and passing in opposite directions into said intermediate opening of said pocket and through said pocket, each of said straps passing through an end opening of said pocket and being disposed along the waist band of the skirt, and means for adjustably securing said. straps at said Waistband oi the skirt.
7 2. A skirt having a Waistband, a placket opening, a closing flap extending over said opening. and provided near the upper edge With an open-ended pocket having at the inner side an opening intermediate its ends, crossed. and oppositely disposed straps se- ABRAHAM oonnnnne.
