UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE N. BUCK, OF MATTOON, ILLINOIS.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,599, dated April 2, 1895. Application filed March 19, 1894- Serial No. 504.118. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE N. BUCK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mattoon, in the county of Ooles and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements designed to "produce a new garment supporter especially with reference to use by children, which, without unnecessarily encumbering the child, may offer all of the necessary points of attachment for stockings'and skirts, and, yet, allow of free oscillation of the body to permit of stooping or bending backward without strain upon the buttons, and also to give support to certain portions of the abdomen which is generally well developed in young children.
My invention is illustrated in the drawings by means of four figures, of which Figure 1 is a perspective looking from the front and a little from one side. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the supporter cut through the middle portions of the front and back. Fig. 3 is an enlarged front view with the chest band broken away; and Fig. 4. is a detail section in line 4:'-4:, of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, A represents a waistband which is made up of three parts, or gores, a, a, a Of these three parts, a, a. are sewed together at a The third part a is secured to the other two by means of four straps, a a a, 1 Upon this waistband are two series of buttons lettered, respectively, a; and y, the former being intended for the attachment of the waist and the latter for the attachment of the kilts, pants, and other articles of apparel, below the waist. Upon the gore, a a third and lower button is provided, 3 as an additional means of attachment. The com bination of the three gores enables the band, A, to be arranged to rest smoothly upon the person of the wearer without wrinkles at top or bottom, and the double strap and buckle connection between the opposite ends of the gore, a and the adjacent pieces permits of the adjustment of the waistband, both as to size and as to shape, that is to say the band may be lengthened as a whole, or either upper or lower edge may be lengthened independently of the other. Moreover, such adstrap of the garter, b by means of buckles,
b and having at their free ends clamps, or buckles, b, for attachment to the stocking. Above the waistband are shoulder straps, C, O, crossing in the back and slidingly connected at the intersection by means of loops, 0, c, which permit of a limited amount of independent movement of the two straps. The shoulder straps are connected together in front by means of a chestband, D, consisting of two parts, (1, 01, connected respectively at one end to the two shoulder straps, O, O, and united at their other ends by means of a buckle, 01 which enables said chestband to be lengthened or shortened at will. The shoulder-straps themselves are secured by means of buckles, c 0 to short straps, c 0
secured to the waistband, whereby said shoul der straps may be adjusted toany desired length.
The advantages of my invention are numer-- one and it is not thought necessary to mention more than a few.
The ability to adjust the wide waistband to the form of the child both as to its general size and as to the relative size of the upper and lower edges makes it possible to fit one of these supporters to the person of any child within a range of four or five years in age, and the waistband instead of being a burden and a weight upon the abdomen may be made to offer a considerable support to the latter throwing the entire weight of the lower garments upon the shoulders and preventingthe cramping or crowding out of place of the organs of digestion. I
The adjustable shoulder straps enable the waistband to be alwayskept at the proper height and the sliding connection at the intersection allows a free oscillation of the shoulders to permit of stooping or bending in any direction without throwing any unusual strain upon the buttons which support the garments.
The double adjustment of the waistband upon both :sides of the center gore enables said waistband to be varied greatly'in size without any change of buttons and Without disturbing the central position of those upon the front gore.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-'- 1. The combination with a waistband, A, having the central portion, a ,'adjustab1y connected at its ends with the remainder of the Waistband, suitable buttons upon said waistband for the attachment of the garments, the shoulder straps, C, O, adjustably'connected with the waistband at their forward ends and crossing in the back where they are loosely held together by means of the loops, 0, c, the
adjustable chestband, D, and the garters, B,
crossing in the back, the loops, 0, c, at the intersection, the adjustable chestband, D, and the garters, B; substantiallyas described.
GEORGE N. BUCK.
