UNION sem nar.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Piatented el an. 18, 1916.
Application filed October 23, 1914. Serial No. 868,232.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK D. BAKER and PETER Hovnano, citizens of the United States, and residents of Sioux City,.1n the county of W'oodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovenients in Union Garments, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to union garments, and more particularly to onepiece suits of overalls. i
Union overalls which are supported directly from the body or jacket portion of the garment are uncomfortable to the wearer due to their preventing'free move. ment of the body and their tendency to cling to the person in hot weather. F urthermore, the production of such garments is expensive, inasmuch as garments of like chest and leg measurements must be made. with varying lengths of waists,
The present invention, therefore, has for its primary object, the production of a union suit of overalls, the trousers portion of which is supported by adjustable straps, or suspenders from the shoulders, thus permitting the jacket portion to fit loosely. and hang blouse-like.
Av further object of the invention is the production of a garment of this class so designed that the seat portion may be readily lowered without detaching the suspenders.
With these and other objects inview, the invention, consisting ,in the construction, combination and novel arrangement of parts, will be fully uderstood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which-form a part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which,-
Figure 1 is a front-view of a. person clothed with a garmentmade in accordance with the invention, a portion, of the blouse being cut away; Fig. 2 is :1 rearview of the same, the seat portion being lowered; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the garment; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section of the garment, taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, the trousers and jacket portions being cut away.
Referring now to the illustrations, the lower edge of the jacket portion, 5 and the as upper edge of the trousers portion, 6, are
permanently secured together across the removably fastened to the jacket portion,
as by buttons, 9, on the outside of the trousers portion, positioned near the middle of the back thereof andengageable with but-.
ton-holes, 10, correspondingly positioned in the jacket.
The seat portion of the trousers is cut from the front portionat the sides of the garment and downwardly 'a distance from the upper edge of the trousers, as at 11. The front edges of the seat portion are overlapped by and removably' secured to the adjacent edges of the front portion by buttons, 1 2, secured to .the seat portion and engaged by button-holes, 13, in the rear edges of the front portion.
14; are suspenders, of any suitable style, preferably those which cross at the back and are provided with front adjusting buckles, as 15. The front ends ofthe suspenders are provided with wire loops, 16, to engage buttons, 17, secured in any suitable manner to the front inner side of the garment adjacent the waist; preferably by means of short straps, 18, on the front sides of which and 7 adjacent the upper edges, the buttons 17 are fastened, and the lower ends of which are secured by rivets, 19, or otherwise, to the innerside of the garment at the point where the trousers and jacket overlap. The rear ends of the suspenders are riveted, or otherwise secured to the inner side of the back of the jacket and adjacent the lower edge thereof, as at 20.
The short straps, 18, serve two purposes First,-they afford a point of attachment for the buttons, 17,-where the latter will not come in contact with the body of the wearer. If the buttons, 12, were secured directly to the inner side of the waistband of the garment, they would be liable to cause the wearer discomfort, and, perhaps, tear or rust the clothing worn inside the overalls. Second,-when worn with two piece underwear, the straps may be passed through the loops, generally provided on the upper edges of the drawers, and thereby support the latter.
By virtue of the garment now disclosed it is clear that the trousers portion issupported by vmeans of suspenders the front, ends of which aredetachably secured to thetrousers portion, and the rear ends'of which may be permanently fastened to the back of the jacket portion, and that the seat portion is detachably secured to the jacket adjacent the point of attachment of the rear ends of the suspenders.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
l. A union garment comprising a jacket and trousers having a drop seat portion, the upper edge of the seatportion'being overlapped by and detachably secured to the inner side'of the back of the jacket, and's usponders comprising straps adapted to pass over the shoulders of the wearer a'nd'dis posed inside the jacket, the front ends of the straps being secured to the inner side of the 7 front of the trousers, and their rear ends being secured to the inner side of the portion of the jacket which overlaps the seat portion, whereby the trousers are supportedfrom the shoulders by the suspenders, thereby permitting the jacket to blouse.
2. A union garment comprising a-jacket and trousers having a drop seat portion, the upper edge of the seat portion beingxoverlapped by and detachably secured to the inner side of the backof thejacket, short straps securedat their lower ends to' the inner side of the front of the trousers, and suspenders comprising straps adapted to pass over the shoulders of the wearer and disposed inside the jacket, the front ends of the latter straps being detachablysecuredto said first straps, and their rear ends being secured to the inner side of the portion'of the jacket which overlaps the seat portion,-. whereby the trousers are supported from the shoulders by the suspenders, thereby permitting the jacket to blouse;
In testimony whereofiwe have hereunto set our hands, each in the presence ofytwo witnesses.
