To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. GALLUP and LEE CHURCHILL, of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have jointly invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirt-Waists, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to certain improve ments in the manner of making shirt-waistsakind of garment used for childrens wear, which are by them worn exteriorly, and made to hold up the skirt or pantaloons by their attachment at the waist thereof.

Shirt-waists have usually been made so that the weight of the attached skirts or pantaloons was sustained on the shoulders of the wearer, which had the tendency to straighten out the shirts, so as to draw them down close to the body, and thus give a gaunt appearance to the wearer from the removal of the gathered and laundered fullness of the garment. The capacitywhich small boys have for weighting down their pockets added to this tendency and the vertical strain upon the shirt-Waist producing it.

The object of our invention is to so make this class of garments that the vertical tension and strain upon them and the shoulders shall 'be removed therefromand transferred to the hips of the wearer, and this we accomplish by a method of making such garments, which is illustrated in the accompanying two plates of drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which there are three figures shown with the same designation of parts by letter-reference used in all of them.

Figure 1 shows a shirt-waist made with our improvement, and the garment shown as open at the bottom of the front opening, with the lower corners thrown back. Fig. 2 illustrates a view of the same shirt'waist that is shown at Fig. 1 with the front of the garment closed. Fig. 3 illustrates a longitudinal section of the parts, taken on the line :0 0c of Fig. 2.

The several parts of the garment thus shown are designated by letter-reference and their function explained as follows:

The letter A indicates the shirt-waist body,

0 the neck-opening, and G the collar, the gar-" ment being shown as'made to open vertically at the front from the collar to the waist on the line of the fly F and to be secured thereat by means of buttons '1 and button-holes, in the usual manner.

The letter D indicates a belt attached eX- teriorly to the garment at theback thereof, as designated at a a, and S S indicate straps on the shirt-waist exterior, under which straps the belt D is passed. On the straps are placed either buttons 13 or button-holes for the attach. ment of the skirt or pantaloons adapted at their waistbands for such connection. Atthe front the belt D passes beneath the underlap F and overlap-fly F by means of vertical slits I I at each side, made in the garment, and the belt for a girth-connection and tension upon the hips of the wearer connects at its ends by means of a buckle, M, or other suitable means beneath the garment. Instead of a buckle, any well-known means for connecting the ends of the belt may be used.

As the means for attaching theskirt or pantaloons to the shirt-waist would be the same whether the buttons were arranged on the latter and the button-holes made in the attaching garments or the position of the buttons and button-holes were reversed, our invention includes either of these transpositions of thebuttons and buttonholes.

As the'purpose of the straps S is to make a passage-way connection between the shirtwaist body and the belt, if desired, instead of the straps S, externally attached to. the garment, parallel slits may be made therein for passing the belt under and out from under the sides of the shirt-waist through said slits, where the skirt or pantaloons attach to the latter.

When the shirt-waist thus made is worn, the belt D,attached to the former at the back, is passed beneath the straps or through parallel slits made in the shirt-waist, and interiorly buckled at thefront ends to secure a girth hold or support on the hips of the wearer. The shirt-waist, being free upon the belt at the front and sides, has a girth adjustment thereon, and

is also thereby connected with the belt, so as to transfer to it any tension made upon it by the weight of the attached skirt or pantaloons.
