GARMENT.
Application filed July 31,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Airrinn Francis Sncnns'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wichita, in the county of Set gwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to garments and more particularly to outer protective garments either of the ordinary overall type or of the combination jacket and trouser 0r union garment type.
An important object of my invention is to provide a garment which will freely, easily and automatically adjust itself'to all movements and positions of the body of the wearer and which will relieve of any strain or pull the shoulders or other parts not well adapted to bear the same and evenly distribute any such pull or strain over parts best adapted to bear the same.
Another object is to provide a garment of this type which is neat and comfortable and easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will become. apparent as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this Specification and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination jacket and trouser garment embodying my invention and showing the garment in use,
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the garment, the front being unbuttoned and thrown back and parts thereof being broken away, for the sake of illustration,
Fig. 3 is an elevational view showing the rear of the garment, parts being broken away for the sake of illustration,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing my invention embodied in a garment of the overall type the garment being shown. in use,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view, the parts thrown open for the sake of illustration,
Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the form, arrangement and points of suspension of the seat flap extensions,
Fig. 7 is a rear View of the overall type of garment showing the garment in use and the wearer in erect position,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, rear.
1919. Serial No. 314,415.
Fig. 8 is a side view of the overall type showing the wearer in bending position.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the draw-- ings, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention shown in these figures comprises a body portion in the form of a jacket 10 open at the front and adapted to button along the median or central line thereof and having integral with said front, trousers 11. A reinforcing strip 10 may be provided along the waist line if desired. The trousers are provided with a seat flap 12 having extensions 13 integral therewith These extensions are preferably triangular in form and are so arranged that they extend outwardly and upwardly away from the central or median line of the seat flap as particularly shown in Figs. 2 and 6. The extreme upper ends of the extensions are provided with buttons 14-, the purpose of which is to be hereinafter more fully described. The marginal edges of the seat flap proper are provided with suitable buttons 15 which cooperate with button-holes 15 provided in the adjacent marginal edges of the trousers.
Above the waist line and near each of the side edges of the jacket front, as shown in the drawing, are secured button-hole tabs 16, by means of suitable stitching or the like. These tabs are secured. to the under side of thejacket and are provided with suitable button-holes 16. The buttons of the seat flap extensions are adapted to be engaged in these button-holes when the garment is in position on the wearer.
Then the garment is in position on the wearer as previously described, the seat flap and its extensions are concealed by the cover flap 1'? which is preferably integral with the back of the jacket and hangs downwardly therefrom.
Referring to Figs. 4, 5 and 6 of the drawing, it will. be seen that the embodiment of my invention shown in these figures comprises overalls provided with the trouser section 18, a body portion in the form of a bib 19 and if desired a reinforcing strip 20 around the waist line of said overalls. A seat flap 21 is preferably formed integral with the trouser section and is also provided with seat flap extensions 22 which are also triangular in form and extend outwardly and upwardly away from the central or median line of said seat flap. These seat flap extensions are provided at their outer extremities with button-holes 23 which cooperate with buttons 24 serured to tabs 25 fastened by stitching or the like to the inner side of the bib 19. It is to be understood however that if desired the tabs 25 may be provided with button-holes and the extensions with buttons as in the previous instance.
A neck strap 26 has one end fixed to one upper corner of the bib and the other end is adapted to be secured to the other upper corner ot said bib by a buckle 27 or a button and buttonhole or the like.
The construction, arrangement of parts etc., is practically the same for both enibodiments of the invention but as all of the theatures of operation are identically the same a single description. of the opera tion applies equally well to both forms of the invention.
It is apparent that the point of suspension of the seat lap extensions is the point of suspension of a major portion oi the gar nent especially during certain movements and in certain. positions of the body of the wearer. This point of suspension is so disposed vertically above the waist line and horizontally around to the front of the garment and the seat flap extensions are of such form and so arranged with respect to this point of suspension that in certain. movements of the body, such as a bending movement the strain and pull which have hitherto been applied to the shoulders and other parts not adapted to bear the same are translated into strains extending transversely around the body along lines upwardly inclined toward the front at a slight angle or inclination to the horizontal. This has the etl ect of tightening the bib or jacket against the body of the wearer and thereby preventing the undesirable sag of these portions. On returning to erect posture the garment automatically returns to its natural position being supported by its conformation to the body contour and by the shoulders in the case of the union garment and the neck strap in the case of the overall.
It is to be understood however that all pull or strain due to any movement or position are not imposed upon the shoulder or neck strap but are taken up along substantially horizontal lines around the body as previously described. Tt is obvious that in this manner any necessity for shoulder straps or suspenders is entirely eliminated.
The triangular shaped extensions may be made adjustable if desired.
I claim:
1. A garment consisting of a jacket, trousers integral with the front thereof, a seat flap integral with the back of the trousers having triangularly shaped extensions extending outwardly and upwardly away from the center of said seat flap and being provided with buttons at the extreme upper ends thereof, tabs provided with button-holes attached to the under side of the front of said jacket and adapted to receive the buttons of said seat lap extensions and a cover flap adapted to conceal said seat flap and extensions when the garment is in. position on the wearer.
2. A garment consisting ol a jacket, trousers integral with the rront thereof, a seat flap integral with the back of the trousers having triangularly shaped extensions extending outwardly and upwardly away from the center of said seat flap and being provided with buttons or other suitable liastencrs at the extreme upper ends thereof, and tabs provided with button-holes attached to tl e under side of the front of said jacket and adapted to receive the buttons of said scat flap extensions.
A garment consisting of a body portion, trousers associated therewith, a seat flap on said trousers having triangularly termed extensions extending outwardly and upwardly from the center of said seat flap to the side edges thereof adapted to be attached to the under side of the front of said body portion.
4-. A garment consisting of a body portion, trousers associated therewith and a seat flap on said trousers having two triangulariy formed extensions extending outwardly and upwardly from the center of said flap and adapted to be attached to the body portion, substantially as andfor the purposes set forth.
