Description

L. T. COLLETT. EINDERGARMENT. APPLICATION man SEPT-23. I914.
Patented 0051 2, 1915.
on m h W W/T/VESSES Laura ba fol/eff A TTORNEYS To all whom it may concern:
NIT I s a LAURA IDA contain, or NEVADA, MISSOURI.
UNDERGARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1915.
Application filed September 23, 1914. Serial No. 863,058.
Be it known that I, LAURA IDA CoLLE'rT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nevada, in the county of Vernon and State of Missouri, have invented a' new and Improved Undergarment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wearing apparel and its object is to provide a new and improved womans knit undershirt or vest arranged to snugly fit the body and to be firmly held in place without the use of undesirable and unsightly shoulder straps or sleeves.
Inorder to accomplish the desired result, use is made of 'a knit tubular body provided at its upper end with a draw string to permit of drawing the said upper end tight at the wearers body along a line extending under the arm-pits and overthe bust to hold the garment in place without the use of shoulder straps or sleeves. A practical embodiment of the invention' is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the undergarment as applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the undergarment; Fig. 3 is 'a perspective view of a portion of the draw. string; Fig. 4 is an en-' larged sectional plan view of the same; and
Fig. 5 is a reduced perspective view of a modified form of the undergarment- The under garment consists essentially of a knit tubular body A provided at its upper end with a beading or a hem B for the reception of a draw string C to draw the upper end of the tubular body A tight around the wearers body along a line extending under the armpits and. over the bust as plainly indicated in Fig. L By this arrangement the undergarment is securely held in'position on the wearers body without the use of shoulder straps or sleeves.
' The lower end of the tubular body A is pro- ,vided with a ribbing so as to slightly con tract the garment at the lower end which latter extendspreferably to the'lower end of the abdominal'region a short distance be-' low the same. It is understood that the garment owing to its elasticity fits snugly on the wearers body.
The draw string C may be of elastic or non-elastic material but is preferably made as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and consists of a back portion C of elastic webbing and side and end portions C preferably of non-elastic material. The ends of the back portion C are detachably connected with the rear terminals of the side and front ends by the use of suitable fastening devices E such as heads and sockets, as indicated in Fig. 4. It is understood that it is desirable to remove the elastic back portion 0 whenever it is desired to laundry the garment. The front terminals of the draw string are tied into a bow, as indicated in Fig. 2, after the draw-string has been drawn sufliciently tight to snugly fit the upper end of the body A of the wearers body, as previously explained.
If desired the body A may be opened along the front from the upper end to the lower end, as indicated at F in Fig. 5, and the overlying portions fastened together by suitable fastening devices G, such as buttons and buttonholes, otherwise the garment is the same as above described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. As an article of manufacture, a womans undergarment having a knit tubular body adapted to fit the wearer from under the armpits downward to a distance below the abdominal region, the upper end of the said knit tubular body being provided with an annular beading overlying the wearers bust and'extending under the armpits, and a draw string held in the said beading to permit of drawing the entire upper endof the undergarment tight around the wearers' body to hold the undergarment in place, the
said draw string having an elastic middle portion and non-elastic side and end portions.
2. .As an article of manufacture, a womans undergarment having a knit tubular body adapted to fit the wearer from under the armpits downward to' a distance below the abdominal region, the upper end of the said knit tubular body being provided with an annular beading overlying the wearers bust and extending under the armpits, and a draw string held in the said beading to permit of drawing'the entire upper end of the undergarment tight around the wearers body to hold the undergarment in place, the said draw string having an elastic middle portion and non-elastic side and end portions, the said middle and end portions being detachably connected with each other:
3.- As an article of manufacture, a womans' undergarment comprising aknit tubular bodyextending at its, lower end to the lower -.end of the abdominal region and slightly contracted at said end,-thesaid body fitting at its upper end under the arm pits, and a draW-strin'g'at the upper end of the tubular body for contracting the same, to hold the body, adapted to fit at its upper end under at the upper end of the tubular body for contracting the same, the draw string having a back portion of elastic Webbing and terial, and fastening devices for detachably connecting'the ends of the back portion With the rear terminals of the side and front portions. l
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
