RALPH LOWENBAUH, 01' ST. LOUIS, .IISBOUBI, ASSIGNOB TO B. LOWENBAUI G. 60., 0] ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A. CORPORATION OF MISSOURI Application m September 2, 1930. Serial no. 479,140.
This invention relates generally to womens wearing apparel and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful lmprovement in womens combination or convertible garments.
My invention has for its chief object the provision of an apparel garment whichmay with ease, convenience, and facility be selectively converted for appropriate wear on different occasions.
My invention has for a further object the provision of a convertible garment of the type stated which may be inexpensively and economically constructed, which is simple in structure, and which is pleasing and attractive in appearance in either of its convertible forms.
And with the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the provision of an article of wearing apparel for womens use comprising a foundation-garment especially adapted for sports wear and associated sections for ready attachment to the foundation garment for converting the same selectively for street-wear, night-wear, boudoir and beach wear, and in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. 1
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure 1 is a semi-elevational-perspective view of the foundation garment of the present wearing-apparel of my invention;
Figure 2 shows in elevation the associated companion sections for attachment for converting purposes to the foundation garment of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a semi-elevational perspective view of the foundation-garment converted for use for night, boudoir, or beach-wear;
Figure 4 is a similar view of the foundation garment converted for street wear; and
Figure 5 is a rear semi-elevational-perspect-ive view of the converted street garment of Figure 4 with one of the converting sections removed.
Referring now more in detail and by reference characters to the drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention, A designates the foundation garment,
called which includes a waist 1 terminatin at a proximately the waist-line for encirc ing t e upper part of the body, and drawers or soshorts 2 closed at the crotch and comprising leg enclosing sections 3, 3, and a rear drop seat section 4. The drawers or shorts 2 are in the front of the arment suitably conjoined-to and depend om a waistband 5, which preferably permanently connects the waist 1 and the drawers 2, the dro seat section 4 opening at the rear of t e waist 1 and being adapted for closin connection to the waist 1 as by a suitable astening means or button-and-button-hole arrangement, as at 6. The waist 1 preferably opens down the back, as best seen in Figure 5, and
suitable fastening means or button-and-button-hole arrangements, as at 7, serve to secure the waist 1 and consequently also the garment A upon the person, the garment A being dressed on the body or figure after the manner of a so-called step-in, union-suit, or the like,
The foundation garment A forms 8,1601!- venient and effective dress for especially sports or gymnasium wear. However, for converting the garment A for other and additional uses or for wear selectively on different occasions, the garment A is provided transversely therearound atits waist with a series of suitably spaced buttons or the like 8, of which the buttons 6 may be a part, and each leg-member 3 is also provided therearound adjacent its lower margin with a series of correspondingly spaced buttons or the like 9.
For converting co-operation with the garment A and its attaching members 8 and 9, are preferably identical companion sections B, B, each of which is constructed of preferably the same flexible material as that of garment A and each of which has preferably the segmental or downwardly and outwardly flaring form and contour best seen in Figure 2. As there shown, each of the garment converting sections B, B, is substantially in the form of a segment, its top and bottom margins being of arcuate conformation, as at b, b, and its opposite side margins 0 being of oblique conformation, connecting the ad jacent ends of its top and bottom margins.
as p
Each section B, B, is referabl neatl marginally bound, as at and adjacent its top complemental fastenings, such as buttons 8 and 9, on the waist-line and on the le -portions below the crotch of the garment It will be understood that the garment A and its associate or converting sections B, B, are constructed in'proper relative size proportions and dimensions, and in use, the respective sections B, B, may at thelr respective button-holes 10 be attached to the buttons 9 to depend in leg covering arrangement from the foundation-drawers 2. Preferably, each section B, B, is so attached to its respective drawer-leg 3 so that 1ts side margins c depend in overlapping relation along the outer side of the leg, as shown 1n Figure 3 and to facilitate the attaching location of each section B, B, upon the respective legs 3, the sections B, B, are each preferably provided approximately in the longitudinal center of its top margin 1) with a snap couplet member or the like 11 adapted for co-operative engagement with a respective companion member 12 suitably fixed in location roviding position on the drawerleg 3, as est seen in Figure 1.
Thus the foundation-garment A is readily and conveniently converted into, and for interchangeable use as, a garment of pajama type, with long, full leg-coverings, for night, boudoir, or beach wear.
Similarly, the one section B may be attached at its button-holes 10 to some of the buttons 8 to depend from the waist of the garment A in drawer-covering or dress formation, the section B being) so attached in the front of the garment and eing of such relative dimensions that, when so attached, it for the most part encircles the body of the wearer, as best seen in Figure 5, its side marginal portions 0 bein disposed in somewhat s aced relation in the rear of the wearer.
e companion section B is similarly attached at its button-holes 10 to some of the buttons 8 to likewise depend from the waist of the garment A in drawer-covering or skirt formation, the companion section B, however, being oppositely disposed in its attachment to the Waist to the section B, the section B being attached for the most part in the rear of the garment and its side margins 0 being correspondingly presented in the front of the garment. The section B thereby covers and conceals the space that would ordinarily be present between the somewhat muses s aced side margins c of the under section the mar 'nal portions 0 of the companion section Bv ing disposed in the front of the garment in overlapping relation u n the under section B, as best seen in F1gure 4. Thus the com anion sections B, B, are also adapted to se ectively convert the foundation garment A into quite an attractive dress suitable for street wear, the drop-seat 4 being readily accessible upon a mere partial un- 7 buttoning of one or both the sections B, B, as will. be obvious.
In such manner, I provide for womens wear a garment with co-operative or associate interchangeable sections, whereby the garment is not only adapted for sports or gymnastic wear, but may with ease and convenience be converted selectively for interchangeable use as pajamas for night, boudoir, or beach wear or as a dress for street wear.
It will be understood that any other suitable co-operable attaching members may be substituted for theseries of buttons and button-holes described, and that other changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the garment may be made and sub stituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an article of womens wearing apparel, a foundation garmenticomprislng a waist and short drawers, the latter comprising a pair of leg-encircling members, and the garment being circumferentially provided at approximately its waist-line with a series 'of attaching members and being also provided circumferentially along the lower margins of each of said leg-members with a series of attaching members, in combination with separate companion sections of segmental confi ration each provided at its top margin wit a series of attaching-members for cooperable engagement with the respective attaching members of the garment, said sections being selectively attachable with either said waist-line attachingmembers or with said leg-attaching members to depend from either the waist or the legmembers of the garment for converting the garment into pajama or dress-formation.
'2. In an article of womens wearing apparel, a foundation-garment comprising a waist and drawers, in combination with separate segmental companion sections adapted when in opposed and marginally overlapping relation to provide a skirt for the garment, each of said sections flaring downwardly and outwardly from its upper margin and having a length at its upper margin less than that of the waist-measurement of the garment, each of said sections also having a. series of fastenings along its upper margin, and series of equally spaced complemental fastenings substantially on the waist-line of the garment, some of said latter fastenings co-operating with fastenings of both said sections for dependingly connecting said sections to the garment in said opposed and marginally overlapping relation for converting the garment into dress-formation.
3. In an article of womens wearing apparel, a foundation-garment comprising a waist and short drawers, in combination with separate companion sections, and series of fastenings on each of said sections and on the waist-line of the garment and on, and
below the crotch of, the drawers for cooperative engagement for selective detachable connection of said sections to the waist or drawers of the garment for converting the garment into either pajama or dress-formation.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
RALPH LOWENBAUM.
