UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. LISTER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES 3. POST, OF
' SAME PLACE.
GARMENT-SU'PPO RTE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360.809, dated April 5 1887.
I Application filed September 18,1886; Serial No. -213,893. (No model.)
To all whom i may concern:
Be it known t mi; 1, JonN '1. LISTER, a citizen of the Uni ed States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to garment-supporters; and its object is to provide a skeleton supporter which is suspended from the shoulders and adapted to have attached thereto the under and over garments-of children, andthe skirts, stockin gs, and undergarments of women whereby the weight of the garments is taken from the waist and transferred wholly to the shoulders.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the supporter as adapted for the use of children. Fig. 2 shows it adapted for use by women. 7
A represents the waistband provided with suspenders B and stocking-holders G. The waistband, in addition to the suspenders attached thereto, is provided with buttons a at intervals around the band, and a breast-piece, D, arranged centrally in front and intermediate of the suspenders, as shown. The buttons on the belt and this piece D are designed for the attachment of the garments of a child and to take the place of the buttons on the clothes.
For example, the buttons on the band will substitute the usual buttons attached to the waist or jacket for holding up the trousers, while those on the breast-piece serve to buttoo the waist or jacket in front. Both sets of buttons are used to fasten all over and under garments that ordinarily are buttoned around the waist or up in front. This obviates the necessity of attaching any buttons whatever to the garments, which will have button-holes instead, and supplies permanent buttons on the skeleton worn beneath.
In case the supporter is worn by a little girl, it might be desirable to place the piece D behind on the belt. If the supporter is to be worn by women, clasps or other suitable holders for the skirts and other garments may be substituted, in whole or in part, for buttons, and straps F F for fastening the bustle secured to the waist band. The several suspenders and holders may be detachably secured to the waistband and have buckles for'regulating their length.
In some instances it might be desirable to dispense with the stocking holders or the breast-strap D, which may be done if either is not wanted. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V In a garmentsupporter, a waistband having fixed buttons arranged at intervals around its outside, suspenders to support the band from the shoulders, holders or suspenders for the stockings, and an intermediate strap, as D, secured to the belt at its lower end, and provided with buttons for fastening the garments, substantial] y as set forth.
JOHN r. LISTER.
