ADJUSTABLE SUSPENDERS.
'Paea a Jail. e1, 1903.
Application filed September 24: 1906. Serial No. 335,882-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN J. HAYDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Suspenders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to suspenders of that type in which loops are adjustably'secured to the shoulder straps of the suspenders at the front ends for connection with the button straps or loops that engage the front buttons of the trousers to be supported.
The invention has for one of its objects to improve and simplify the construction of suspenders of this character so as to render the same comparatively easy and inexpensive to manufacture, of light weight, comfortable for the user, and readily adjustable.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pair of suspenders in which the shoulder straps are detachably and pivotally connected at the point where they cross each other, thereby permitting the straps to have relative movement to accommodate themselves to the movement of the body of the wearer.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of looped members that are connected with the shoulder straps by clasp or spring fasteners such for instance as those commonly employed on gloves, whereby the suspenders can be readily adjusted to effect the proper set of the trousers.
\With these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one of the embodiments of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the suspenders. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the looped straps or members detached. Fig. 3 is a side view of the front end. of one of the shoulder straps showing a looped member attached-thereto. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of one of the fast0 ing devices.
deterring to the drawing ggleg gnates the j two shoulder straps or braces which may be of any suitable material and elastic or nonelastic, as desired. The ends of the straps O that are disposed at the front when in position on the wearer, are provided with a plurality of caps or sockets A suitably spaced apart and by means of these caps, the looped members B are adjustably attached to the straps O, the said straps B having secured thereto a plurality of studs F for engaging in the caps or sockets A. These studs and caps may be and preferably are of that type commonly employed on gloves. Extending loosely through the looped members B are the button loops D that attach tothe buttons at the front of the trousers to be supported. At the point where the shoulder straps 0 cross is a fastener E preferably of the glove type which permits of a relative pivotal movement of the straps O and also enables the straps to be disconnected when desired. On the back ends of the straps C are the usual button holes for attaching the said straps to the back trousers buttons.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method ofoperation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains. By means of the loops B and the fastenings for adjustably connecting the same witlrthe straps O, the suspenders can be readily" lengthened or shortened to suit the wearer and the wearing on the straps C and the inconvenience attending the use of the common form of metal buckles, loops or slides hitherto employed is successfully overcome and after the suspenders'are once adjusted, they are positively prevented from accidental loosening, thus insuring secure support for the garments while at the same time affording aniple flexibility to permit freedom of movement of the body of the user.
I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the construc tion which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, but desire to have it understood that the construction shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired, as are within the scope of the claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A pair of suspenders comprising two crossed shoulder straps, a fastening for detachably connecting the straps at the point of crossing and composed of a member fixed on one stra and a second member fixed on the other; Eexible looped elements detachably and adjustably connected" with the front ends of the straps, both ends of each element being independently GOIlIlGCiIBdW'ltll its respective strap, and button engaging members doubled and extending through the elements.
2. A pair of suspenders comprising two crossed shoulder straps detachably connected at the point of crossing, flexible elements detachably and adjfisjtably secured to the front ends of the straps to form loops,
a plurality of fastening devices composed of separate parts secured in spaced relation on the straps atthe front ends and on the elements at the ends and intermediate points whereby any of the parts on the elments'ZO can be connected With any of the parts of the straps," fiexible members passing through the looped elements, and button engaging means on the ends of said members.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature 25 in the presence of two Witnesses.
