COMBINED MUFFLER AND SCARF.

This invention relates to a'combined muffler and scarf.

In the past, combined mufflers and scarfs, consisting of a back section and two muffler sections, have been proposed. The muffler portions were adapted to be crossed across the chest of the wearer and fastened to cor ners of the back section. These garments are usually made of knitted woolen fabric or similar elastic material and the pull on the muffler portions tends to pull the back section out of shape. This disadvantage is particularly apt to arise in the case of combined mufflers and scarfs to be worn by children.

It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a combined mufiler and scarf which avoids the disadvantages of the prior product set out above. lVith this and other objects in view, the invention includes a combined muffler and scarf having muffler portions of sufficient length to cross over the chest of the wearer and to meet in the back where the ends of the muffler portions are fastened to each other as well as to the back section. Thus the pull on the muffler portions, which is apt to be considerable where the garments are worn by children who indulge in violent exercise, is equalized by the pull on the opposite muffler portion and does not tend to distort or stretch the back section, even when the garment is made of very elastic knitted fabric.

The invention will be described in greater detail in connection with the drawings which illustrate one modification of the invention. It should be understood, however, that the invention is not limited to the particular shape and structure shown in the drawings which constitute an illustration of a referred embodiment of the invention and not limit its scope.

In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are per spective views of a figure wearing the combined mufller and scarf of the present in vention, Figure 1 being a view from the rear, and Figure 2 from the front; and

The garment consists of a back section 1 and two muffler portions 2 which are preferably formed integral with the back section or permanently attached thereto. A button or other fastening 3 is provided in the center of the lower edge of the back section. One muffler portion is provided with three loops, 4, 5 and 6, at its end, While the other muffler portion is provided with a loop 7 and two buttons, 8 and 9.

When worn, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the back section extends from the wearers shoulders down to the small of the back and the two muffler portions pass over the shoulders and are crossed over the chest and extend alongthe lower edge of the back section. The muffler ends are directly connected with each other by means of the buttons 8 and 9 which fasten in the loops 5 and 4, respectively. The

6 and 7 fasten over the button 3 and serve to attach the ends of the muffler portion to the back section, thus preventing it from riding 'up when worn.

It will be seen that the structure and method of fastening, shown in the drawings, provides a positive connection between the two muffler ends so that the pull on one muffler portion is directly transmitted to the other muffler portion. The pull thus tends to be equalized and'there is little or no lateral pull on the back section which is thus kept unstretched.

In the drawings, I have illustrated fastenings consisting of buttons and loops but it should be clearly understood that this particular method of fastening is not essential to the invention and any other equivalent method of fastening, such as buttons and button-holes, hooks and eyes. snap fasteners, and the like, may be used. The invention is also not limited to the provision of a single fastener in the center of the lower edge of the back section but, on the contrary, a plurality of fasteners along this edge may be used and, in some cases, are desirable, although the tendency to stretch the back piece by lateral pull is apt to be greater than where the only connection between the muffler ends and the back section is at a single point.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, illustrated in the drawings, the muffler portions are shown capable of being fastened to the lower edge of the back section. The invention, however, is notlimited to this relative length of back section and muffler portions and, in some cases, where it is desired to have a longer back section extending further down the back of the wearer, the central fastening may be some-distance from the lower edge.
