Description

(No Model.)
B. RICE. CAPE" No. 573,618. Patented 1300.22, 1896.
m: warns PETERS co. Fame-Lima. wmms'ron. 0. cv
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND RICE, OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY.
CAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,618, dated December 22, 1896.
Application filed March 10, 1896. Serial No. 582,577. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND RICE, an officer of the United States Army, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Capes for Overcoats, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in capes, and is particularly adapted to be applied to the capes on military overcoats; and it consists of a cape divided in front and provided with complemental fastenings, and also provided with frogs and buttons or other suitable fastening devices so placed that they serve to secure the cape when it is rolled or folded in belt form and, further, provided with means for securing the ends of the cape, whereby it may be rolled up and secured at the ends, so that it may be carried over the shoulder as a belt when it is not worn for protection.
A cape showing these improvements is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows the body of the cape A, and the frogs B B B, and the buttons 0 C O. The cape rolled is shown in Fig. 2, and in Fig. 3 the cape is shown with terminal fastenings B and C.
It is obvious that the frogs and buttons are not essential means of fastening. The same result may be obtained by hooks and eyes, straps and buckles, or other suitable devices.
The advantages of this invention are these:
Its use enables soldiers to dispense with car- 3 5 rying an overcoat in warm weather, as the cape may be rolled and fastened and worn over the shoulder, to be spread if needed. At the present time the cape on the army overcoat is unprovided with any means of securing it in folded or rolled form, and my in vention will prove to be a great convenience to commands on a street-parade or similar duty in uncertain 01' bad weather when the winter overcoat would be oppressive and 4 5 when to carry the overcoat it would have to be worn.
IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A cape, divided in front and provided with complemental fastenin gs thereat, and provided with a series of complemental fastenings, arranged substantially in parallel lines and extending bodily across the garment, whereby the cape may be rolled and secured to carry over the shoulder, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDMUND RICE.
