SYLVANUS W. LONG AND GEORGE U. LAROM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PLACKET- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,715, dated April 28, 1903.
Application 1116a February 7, i903.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SYLVANUS W. LONG and GEORGE U. LAROM, citizens of the United States, and residentsof the city of New York, borough ofManhattan,in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Im proved Placket-Closer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in placket-closers for skirts.
In carrying out the present invention Wehave particularly in view providing an article of this character which may be attached to the skirt in such manner that the edges of the material of the placket will be held in a position of contact by the aforesaid article when such skirt is being worn. 4
A further object of our invention is to provide a placket-closer which may be readily and quickly secured to the skirt and one which will be extremely light in weight and of such shape and form that when inposition on the skirt the bulky untidy appearance generally presented by the placket-closers now in use will be obviated.
A further object is to provide the members forming the closer with an enlarged platelike portion or a series of such porti0ns,adapted to lie flat against the material of the skirt and extend inwardly away from the edges of the placket, such plate-like portions preserving the hang and stiffness of the skirt, preventing the turning or disarrangement of the main members of the placket-closer, and which may be provided with apertures forv the threads securing the closer to the garment.
With these and other objects of a similar nature in view, our invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described in this specification, delineated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a garment Fig. 2 is a plan View of the two members forming Serial No. 142,290. (No model.)
the closer, and Fig. 3 is a partial detail per= spective view of a modified form of fastener.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in detail, the letter A designates a skirt or similar garment having the double-folded bands B and O, forming the placket-opening at the rear thereof. At the edges of the skirt forming the opening, and in the present instance within the outer folds b and c, is adapted to be secured through any suitable agency, such as stitching or the like, the two main strips or members 1 and 2, forming our improved fastener. These members or strips are preferably formed of some light resilient or slightly-elastic material, such as metal, and are adapted when secured to the skirt and in use to have their adjacent straight edges 3 and 4 contiguous or ina position of abutment. Extending from the opposite longitudinal edges of the members and formed approximately centrally thereof and integrally therewith are the relatively enlarged portions or plates 5 and 6, which are apertured, as at 7 and 8, for the passage of the thread employed for stitching the members to the garment.
These plates or enlarged portions are a Veryimportant and essential feature incident to our invention, as they cause the edges of the placket to lie flat in a contiguous position and prevent the metallic strips 1 and 2 from turning, in addition to preserving the shape or hang of the skirt and providing a bearing-surface for the securing-threads.
Near the upper and lower ends of the members 1 and 2 are formed smaller extensions or plates, as at 9 10, which assist the large central plate in preserving the shape and hang of the garment.
For the purpose of hooking or connecting the two members in their operative positions, whereby to close the-placket, we provide one of the membersfo r example, the member lat points along its surface with a number of hooks 11, adapted to pass through and engage with the eyes 12, formed on or secured to the opposite member. If desired, the hooks and eyes may be formed integral with or out of the same material as the strips, as shown at 11 and 12 in Fig. 3.
To prevent the cutting or injuring of the material of the garment, the ends of the strips or members 1 and 2 are rounded, as
and 16.
shown at 13 and 14:, and provided with apertures 15 and 16 to receive thread.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the use and advantages of our improved placketholder will be readily appreciated.
In the present instance the strips are inserted between the folds at the back of the skirt and the hooks and eyes passed through the material of the garment at the edges of the placket-opening. The members may then be stitched by passing threads through the material and through the apertures 7, 8, 15, The waistband of the skirt may be provided with the usual hook and eye, as shown at d and 6.
While we have herein shown and described our preferred form of closer, it will be evi-' dent that there may be modifications and variations with respect to minor details without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A placket-fastener, comprising two separate flexible, metallic members having the ends thereof rounded and apertured, a relatively enlarged plate formed integral with and centrally of each member, said plates also having apertures therein, small extended plates formed on the same longitudinal edge as the relatively large plates, hooks formed on the opposite longitudinal edge of one of the members from the plates, and eyes formed on the contiguous edge of the other member, said eyes being adapted to be engaged by and retain said hooks, substantially as set forth.
2. A placket-fastener, comprising two separate, metallic members having apertures therein for the passage of threads, a relatively enlarged plate formed on each member, hooks formed on the longitudinal edge of one member, and eyes on the other member, adapted to be engaged by said hooks, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a skirt or analogous article of a placket-fastener comprising two separate members, an enlarged plate formed on each memberintermediate its ends to prevent the turning of the member when in use, and means for coupling the members, substantially as'specified.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SYLVANUS W. LONG. GEORGE U. LAROM.
