' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LENA SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
VBUSTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 382,059, dated May 1, 1888.
Application filed September 1, 1887. Serial No. 218,543. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LENA SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bustles, of which. the following is a specification.
The nature of the invention also consists in the details of construction, substantially as illustrated in the drawings, hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 illustrates a front view of a bustle constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view illustrating the same with the side flaps open. Fig. 3 illustrates a sectional view taken on the line or y of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, e designates the body ofthe bustle, which is retained in concave form, as illustrated in the drawings, by the spring-ribs ff, which aremade of flat strips of elastic metal in the curved form illustrated, and, reach: ing only from the top of the bustle to the bottom through the convex side thereof, are each fastened with a rivet or eyelet by one end to the top and by the other to the bottom of the bustle. These ribs may be covered with any suitable textile fabric, the edges of which extending beyond the ribs form the side pieces or flaps, c c. I
On the back part of this bustle and across the concave thereof is stretched a piece of textile fabric, 0. This part c is sewed fast to the waistband a and one of the side pieces or flaps, 0, so that the seam reaches all the way around the top, one side, and the bottom of the bustle to c. From thence to the beginning of the seam on the waistband a it is secured by the buttons and button-holes d, thus forming a sack or pocket which may be opened to give access to h, the interior thereof, as illustrated in Fig. 2, or it may be closed by buttoning the flap or side piece, 0, on the buttons (1. The waistband a, which is securely sewed to the bustle,is provided with a buckle, b, by means of which the bustle is fastened around the waist.
This bustle is used in the same way as other devices of its kind, being fastened around the waist by the band a and buckle b, and disposed to hold out the upper part of the back of the skirt; but it may also be used as a sack or pocket in which the wearer may stow away many things inconvenient to carry in the handssuch as a gum rain-mantle and the g like-as illustrated by h in section in Fig. 3.
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a bustle, the combination, with the flat metallic ribsff, curved and covered as specified, reaching only through the convex side of said bustle and fastened by their ends to the top and bottom ofsaid bustle, the'cover ofsaid ribs extending far enough on either side to form the flap c, and the flap c, integral with 'said cover, of a piece of textile fabric stretched across the concave side of,said bustle, secured thereto as specified, and extending far enough to form the flaps c integral therewith, the
flaps c, the waistband a, sewed upon said bustle, the buckle b, fastened to one end of said waistband a, and buttons and buttonholes d, securing the flaps c and 0 together, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
