IRANSFORMABLE GARMENT Application filed December 23, 1929. Serial No. 416,045.

This invention relates to convertible outer garments partaking of the nature of an overcoat and trousers combinedtherewith in a manner to be used at will.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a transtorinab'le garment particularly desirable for llOlSt'lTlCll, hunters. and others exposed to out of door conditions, the arrangement of parts being such as to protect the wearer against inclement weatheuwind storms,and severe cold atmosphericdisturbances.

A further feature is in the provision of a transl'orinable garment, adapted to be worn in the usual manner, resembling an ordinary overcoat, or to encase the lower limbs as may be desired.

Another purpose is to produce a garment of convertible type which is of snnple and durable construction, particularly comfortable in service, of attractive appearance, and whieh'can be manufactured at a moderate cost.

T hcse advantageous objects are accomplished by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, constituting a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a garment constructed in accordance with the invention, in a partially open position, the right trouser leg being open and the left closed. The top coat illustrated may be tailored to any preferred design and the construction material selected to best serve itspurpose; preferably the back 10 has an inverted box plait 11 centrally of its width to extend from a plane below the shoulders 12 to the waist, where a short partial belt 13 is attached at its outer ends and connected at its inner ends by any opposed fasteners.

Extending from the lower edge 14 of the garment is a slit l5 reaching to the lower end of the plait 11, the edges of the slit being normally in contact, as'seen inFigures 2 and 4.

Extending from the upper front ends of the sides 17 are reverted elements 20 blending into a collar 21, and set in the shoulders are sleeves 22 as usual.

Permanently attached to the edges of the slit 15, or formed integrally with them, are

flaps 16 having upwardly extending tabs 23,

provided at their extremities with button holes 28 to engage buttons 29 fixed on the inner surface of the back of the coat, as best seen in Figure 1, in which position a crotch X appears.

Secured to the outer edges of the flaps 16 are strips of hookless fasteners 24 to engage with matching strips 25 on the inside lapels of the sides 17 inwardly of their edges, runners 26 effecting closure or release at will.

When the trousers are not required for use, the elements 16 may be detached from the fasteners and one folded over upon the other as seen in Figure 3.

In the crotch X of the garment atthe junction between the leg elements 16, the material is gathered at its edges to form loose accordian-like folds 16' capable of spreading and stitched at the ends of the gathered portions is a strip 30 of elastic material permitting the fabric to accommodate the posture and movements of the wearer by expansicn of the folds, thereby'securing a comfortable fit.

In the modification seen in Figures 6 to 10 inclusive, the same coat body appears provided with its several usual features.

The trouser elements are however varied from those previously shown and will be seen to consist of opposing elements 31 and 32 having integrally formed therewith, and extending downwardly therefrom the opposing legging portions 31 and 32. The elements 31 and 32 are joined together along the crotch X to the rear of the upper portion of the slit. where the rear edges of the elements 81 and 32 are stitched or joined to the edges of the slit, as at- 33, and extend downwardly to a plane near the bottom of the slit and thence laterally as at 33 along the rear flaps of the coat to the sides thereof.

Hookless fasteners 36 fixed on the inside of the coat along its side are adapted to engage the mating fasteners 36; the fasteners extend only along the trouser portions 31 and 32 and serve to engage the edges of the trouser portions with the sides of the coat.

Another row of hookless fasteners 37 extend downwardly along the edges of the leggings 31 and 32 from the inside of the coat along the side thereof and are adapted to engage the mating fasteners 87 which when joined form the legging portions 31 and 32.

The lower extremity of the leggings are formed with ankle bands 38 having button holes at the ends.

Buttons 34 and 35 serve to hold the belt flaps 34 and 35 in position during use.

When the trouser and leggings are not desired they can be folded and concealed within the flaps of the coat. The description of the manner of folding can be easily seen in Figures 6 and 7.

First the hookless fasteners are all opened and the belt flaps 34 and 35' are unbuttoned thereby permitting the trousers and legging elements to be folded to one side of the coat with the trouser portions 31 and 32 in juxta position and buttoned as at 39 or 39' the right or left side as shown in Figure 6. This leaves the legging portions extended below the bottom of the coat the portion 31 substantially fiat and the portion 32 doubled over with three button holes of the ankle bands in juxtaposition on one side and one on the other, which may be folded upward along the line 40 and secured to buttons 41 and 41.

While certain preferred embodiments of this device have been shown and described, it will be understood that changes in the form, arrangements, proportions, sizes and details thereof may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A convertible garment comprising a body fully open at the front and bifurcated at the back from its bottom edge upward to approximately the waist, interior facings at the open front margins having strips of hookless fasteners, corresponding strips on the inner edges of the bifurcated back portion of the skirt, means for detachably engaging said strips, tabs on the upper ends of the bifurcated portions, means for securing said tabs on one side of the body when in one position and on opposite sides of the body when in another position, and an elastic member attached at the top edges of said bifurcated portions to hold the top edges gathered into vertical folds to allow stretching of the crotch upon bending of a person wearing the garment, and for automatically providing ventilating air passages to the crotch when said edges are in loose condition and between said folds and elastic member.

2. In an outer garment, a back portion extending substantially to the knees and provided with a slit from the lower edge to the waist, a front portion connected at the sides with said back portion and consisting of two separate sections adapted to be secured together, a pair of trouser leg sections each connected with one of the edges of the slit and extendible between the lower limbs, means for attaching the free edges of said leg sections to said front portion so as to include trouser legs together with said back and front portions, means for attaching said leg sections flat against the inside face of the back and front portions so as to provide a garment without legs, and means on the crotch of said trouser leg sections to hold said top edges gathered with vertical folds for allowing stretch of the crotch upon bending of the body of a person wearing the garment, and for automatically providing ventilating air passages to the crotch when in drawn condition of said edges and between said folds and elastic member.

3. A convertible garment comprising a body normally open at the front throughout its entire length and at the back from the waist to its bottom, the rear marginal side edges being disposable between the legs of a wearer, means for detachably connecting the extreme forward edges of said side elements to said body adjacent its front edges thereby constituting a pair of legs, and an elastic secured while under tension onto and between spaced points on the upper edges of said portlons so as to hold the same gathered into a series of vertical folds ermitting stretching and providing ventilation in the crotch thus a formed.
