Ethne V. Feeney, San Diego, Calif., now by judicial decree Ethne Johnson Application December 9, 1947, Serial No. 790,675
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to baby garments, and more particularly to sleeping garments for babies.
Among the problems in raising children in the diaper age is that of protecting them from colds obtained at night, and of preventing them from wetting the bed or crib in which they sleep,
The object of the present invention is to make a garment for a baby which may be worn under its sleeping garment, as an extra protection against colds, and at the same time, as a protection for the bed, to prevent its getting wet.
A further object is to make a babys bed garment, which is loose so as to provide freedom of motion and comfort, is easy to put on, will keep the chest and back warm, and will protect the bed against getting wet.
A further object is to provide a garment as defined above, which will be very simple to make, and in which a diaper may be readily changed without removal of the upper portion of the garment.
A further object is to make a garment as above, by providing a simple loose fitting jacket for its upper portion having its front buttoned, its lower portion being formed in extension of the tail of the jacket by a sheet of material having V notches cut midway in its sides and its lower edge serving as the front of the belt portion of the garment when lifted up and buttoned to the front of the upper portion, said lower portion being then buttoned along the sides to complete the application of the garment.
A further object is to make a garment as defined above, wherein the lower portion is lined with a water-proof material to prevent the bed from getting Wet or soiled.
A further object is to provide the above garment with two buttons for the jacket portion, two for each side of the lower portion, and one between the jacket and the waist band in front.
A further object is to use snap buttons for quicker operation in putting on or removing the garment, or in case of changing diapers A further object is to make the jacket portion of a warmth giving material, such as flannel for cooler climates.
Other and more specific objects will become apparent in the following detailed description of one form of the invention, having reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a front elevational view of the garment illustrating the present invention, with the lower portion stretched out,
Figure 2 is a partial sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure l, and
Figures 3 and 4 are front and rear elevational views, respectively, of the garment all buttoned up, except the lower right side button in Figure 3, to show which way the overlaps are made.
While there are many ways of carrying out the details in making this baby garment, it is gener ally composed of a jacket portion having a loose neckband l short loose sleeves 2 and an open front 3, having, in the present illustration, two buttons i. The rear part or tail of the jacket portion is extended to form a sheet having v' notches 5 out midway in its sides leaving a crotch portion 6 between the vertices of the VS.
The extreme edge I of this sheet is finished off to form the front part of the waist band 8i, when the lower half Q of this sheet is folded up over the upper half Ill. The upper and lower parts of the side edges i I and I2 of this sheet are finished off to form overlaps buttoned at the top and bottom when the halves 9 and it are folded over to form the pants portion of the garment. .A button it is provided between the jacket and the waist band 8.
The inside of the pants portion is lined with a rubber or other waterproof material Hi and may be sewn to the sheet all around its edges, as shown, the rubber lining thus being exposed internally of the pants portion. The V notches may be finished off to form the rims of the leg openings. The
1 lower portion is made loose enough to provide ample room for diapers, and the entire garment is made comfortably roomy.
With this construction warmth around the chest and back is assured, and the use of extra clothing or sweaters is avoided. The lower portion is so made that it can be readily unbuttoned to permit changing of diapers without undoing the jacket portion, and the water-proof lining of the lower portion prevents the bed and the garment from getting wet.
In a cold climate, the upper or jacket portion may be made of light weight flannel, and the lower or pants portion, of outing, while in a milder climate, both portions may be made of outing. The lining may be light weight rubber material.
The buttons shown in the illustration are snap buttons, but it is obvious that other types of but tons might be used. Zippers, however, are not recommended because of the danger of causing discomfort or catching in other clothing.
The present invention is designed more particularly for clothing the baby for sleeping pur poses, although it is not necessarily restricted to such use. At such time the baby is lying prone,
so that its body is wholly above the under side of the garment, thus placing its weight on this portion of the garment and the diaper portion which may be between the body and such garment portion. As a result, wetting or soiling of the diaper places the wetted diaper in close contact with the body as well as the garment surface, not only making the child uncomfortable, but also affecting the garment material itself, should the latter be of textile material unprotected by a waterproof material. In some cases, it is proposed to equip the baby with rubber pants within the garment and overlying the diaper, but such assemblies require an excessive amount of manipulation when a change is to be made.
The present invention presents the protection for the garment through the use of a two-ply, sheet-like nether garment, in which the inner ply is of light weight rubber, the two plies being secured together in such manner that when the garment front is opened to make the change, it concurrently opens the rubber with it, so that the child and its diaper is exposed for the change quickly. Further, since the inner surface of the nether garment is rubber protected in this manner, the rubber surface on which the child is lying can be quickly dried by a wiping cloth, thereby removing any dampness which could affect the new and dry diaper, so that the change of the diaper and the manipulation of the garment to restore its closed condition permits the child to rest in comfort. Further, since a minimum of manipulation is required, the rest of the child is not broken for extended periods.
As will be understood, the conditions are not as discomforting when the child is standing, since the weight of the body is not then applying pressure on the diaper. Hence the garment may be used at other times, if desired, but has its greater value when the child is sleeping.
Many obvious modifications in the form and details of construction might be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention, as defined in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A sleeping garment for babies comprising a waist or jacket zone and a nether or pants zone, said waist zone presenting a body portion of loose dimensions with short sleeves and formed to be opened at the front, said nether zone being of sheet-like formation of extended length projecting from and in permanently secured relation to the tail of the rear portion of the waist zone, said nether zone being foldable midway of its length with it free end formed for detachable securing to the waist band of the front of the waist zone, the midway portion of the nether sheet being formed with V-shaped notches extending inward from opposite sides to thereby provide leg openings for the baby in such folded position of the nether zone, the sheet-like nether zone being of two-ply formation of which the external ply is of textile material with the other ply formed of light weight rubber sheeting exposed internally of the formation to present the inner face of the folded nether zone, the Width of the secured end of the sheet-like zone approximating slightly more than half the annular length of the waist zone of the garment at the waist band line, said width progressively increasing in the direction ol' the V-openings and being greatest at the outer extremity of the V-opening's, the configuration of the free end portion of the sheet beyond the V-openings being a reverse replica of su h section and foldable into overlying relation 'v tn the remaining portion of the sheet to thereby present the applied nether zone with overlapped detachably-secured sides and with a fullness to loosely receive the diaper, the midway portion between notche forming the crotch of the garment, unfolding of such free end portion of the sheet exposing the diaper zone for diaper change activities with the rubber sheeting exposed for cleansing in situ by wiping the sheeting, separable fastening means being provided for securing the garment portions in position for the sleeping postures.
