SLIDE FASTENER ATTACHMENTS Filed Jan. 16, 1950 SIDNEY GLASS JNVENTOR.
ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 7, l954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention has to do with improvements in fastener assemblies of the interlocking segmental slide fastener type, and is directed primarily to the provision of an auxiliary fastening means associated with the usual slide part and serving various advantageous functions with respect not only to the slide fastener, but also the garment parts secured together thereby.
One of my primary objects is to lessen the likelihood of the slide fastener inadvertently being left in open condition by the association with the movable slide of a fastener means so utilized that the normal tendency of the wearer always will be to bring the slide to fully closed position when the garment parts should be closed together. Further, the tendency of the wearer thenwill be to so secure the auxiliary fastening means as to serve the dual functions of holding the slide against unintentional opening movement from closed position, and of interlocking the garment parts independently of the slide fastener proper.
While it is contemplated that the invention may be generally applicable for a wide variety of uses for which slide fasteners are employed, it has particular adaptability in conjunction with slide fasteners for mens trousers. Whereas, using the conventional slide fastener, the wearer may sometimes neglect to fully close it, or the fastener may gradually loosen or open even if closed, the invention virtually assures that the wearer will always bring the slide fully closed and. secure the auxiliary fastener, following which the trousers are fully secured at the waistline and the slide is locked against release.
structurally, the invention contemplates attaching to the fastener slide and to the portions of the garment to be fastened together, two pairs of auxiliary fastener sections, preferably in the form of hooks and eyelets, one pair being in effect carried by the slide and the other pair by the garment sections. Preferably, though typically, I form integrally with a slide-carried element a pair of hooks receivable within a pair of eyelets secured separately to the garment parts in positions so that they may interlock with the hooks, and the garment parts then become fastened together through the slide-carried element, when the slide is fully closed.
The invention has various additional features trative embodiments, will be more fully understood by the following detailed description of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a general View showing the fastener assembly applied to a garment, a portion of the latter being broken away to reveal the fastener parts;
Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Figs. 3 and 4 are top and side views, respectively, of the slide-carried locking element;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating a variational form of the invention;
Figs. 6 and 7 are side and edge views, respectively, of the locking element shown in Fig. 5;
Figs. 8 and 9 are side and edge views, respectively, of one of the hook fastener sections of Fig. 5; and r Fig. 10 is a view illustrating the second hook section.
Referring first to the general showing of Fig. l, I have illustrated at l0 and H the overlapping portions of a garment, for example a fragmentary waistline section on mens trousers at the front overlap. Thus portion I0 is shown to overlap the under portion H, and the latter to carry a flap [2 having a button-hole l3 for reception of button I4 applied to section [0. It is understood that the presence or absence of such incidental fastening means as the buttonable flap is in no respect limitative on the invention.
The garment portions It and II are securable together by slide fastener IS, the interlocking and separable sections of which are secured in the usual manner respectively to the two overlapping fasteners of the garment section. And opening and closing of the fastener 15 is accomplished by the usual slide it. As previously indicated, the invention is concerned primarily with the provision in conjunction with the slide fastener [6, of an auxiliary interlocking device generally indicated at IS, the parts of which are applied to the slide fastener and garment portions so that in effect the latter are fastened together through the slide and, the slide, in turn, is releasably secured in the closed position illustrated.
The slide [6 carries a locking element I9 which conveniently may have the form of a flat plate, the turned ends 20 of which are pivotally received within portion 2| of the slide fastener. The locking element [9 is shaped to provide a pair of hooks 20 and 2! formed integrally with being terminally secured, as by sewing through the openings 24, to ortion ll of the garment. Eyelet 22 is similarly secured to section of the garment in the relation to eyelet 23 shown in Fig. 2. Incidentally, this View exaggerates the spacing of the garment portions in order more clearly to illustrate the fastener parts. It is found desirable to stiffen the edge or flap portion of the garment section [0 at the location of the assembly [8, and for this purpose I provide one or a pair of stifieners extending in alinement with but transversely of the axis of the slide fastener I5. Such stiffeners conveniently may be formed as projections 25 integral with the eyelet 22 and received between plies Illa and lflb of the garment section [0, as shown in Fig. 2. If desired, the terminals 23a of eyelets 23 may similarly be set into the garment section ll between plies lie and llb thereof.
Assuming initially the garment sections [0 and I l to be unsecured by the fastener 15, upon raising the slide IE to the Fig. 1 position, the garment portions become secured together throughout the extent of the slide fastener. The top portions of the garment sections then are quickly and easily secured together simply by holding the locking element :9 in upright position and thrusting the hooks 22 and 23 respectively within the eyelets 20 and 2|. The garment sections (for example at a trousers waist band) thus are held together independently of the slide fastener proper, or any other attaching means, and the slide [6 is effectively locked against inadvertent release for movement toward open position.
The form of the invention illustrated in Figs. to is generally similar to the described embodiment, except that here the positions of the eyelets and hooks are reversed with respect to their placement on the locking element and garment sections. Locking element 28 carries a pair of transversely offset eyelets 29 and 38 projecting from opposite sides of the plate. Portion [0 of the garment carries a fastener section 3 I, see Figs. 8 and 9 having an integrally formed out-turned hook 32 and a pair of stifiener projections 33 corresponding in purpose to the previously described stifieners 25. Garment portion I I carries a second fastener section 34 comprising an integrally formed hook 35 and a base portion 36 attachable to the garment.
Using the form of Figs. 5 to 10, when the slide [6 is moved up to closed position, hook 32 may be thrust into eyelet 50 and hook 235 into eyelet 29 to interlock the garment sections and secure the slide fastener against release.
I claim:
1. The combination comprising a garment having separable portions adapted to be connected together in engaged overlapping relation, an elongated slide fastener attached to said portions and including a slide part movable longitudinally of the fastener between open and closed positions, first fastener sections independent of said slide fastener attached respectively to the engaged overlapping surfaces of said portions of the garment, second fastener sections carried by said first slide part, said first fastener sections being adjacent the closed position of the slide part and being releasably engageable with said second fastener section to secure together said portions of the garment and prevent movement of said slide part from closed position, one of said pair of sections being in the form of eyelets and the other pair being in the form of oppositely turned hooks disposed at opposite sides of the slide part when engaged with said eyelets.
2. The combination comprising a garment having separable portions adapted to be connected together in engaged overlapping relation, an elongated slide fastener attached to said portions and including a slide part movable longitudinally of the fastener between open and closed positions, said slide part including a swingable element, eyelets attached respectively to the engaged overlapping surfaces of said portions of the garment, integral hooks carried by and projecting from opposite sides of said element for reception in its closed position in said eyelets to secure together said portions of the garment and prevent movement of said slide part from closed position.
3. The combination comprising a garment having separable portions adapted to be connected together in engaged overlapping relation, an elongated slide fastener attached to said portions and including a slide part movable longitudinally of the fastener between open and closed positions, said slide part including a swingable single piece element, eyelets attached respectively to the engaged overlapping surfaces of said portions of the garment, integral hooks carried by and projecting from opposite sides of said element for reception at the closed position of said slide part in said eyelets to secure together said portions of the garment and prevent movement of said slide part from closed position, and a garment stiffener formed integrally with one of said eyelets and extending therefrom transversely of the slide fastener axis.
