This invention relates generally to fasteners and more particularly to new and useful improvements in a slider for a zipper fastener wherever used to fasten edges of an opening such as openings in garments or other devices, particularly trousers, dungarees, skirts, dresses, bras, or golf bags, hand bags or other like devices.
Various problems have been encountered in the use of zipper fasteners when used on such garments as trousers or dungarees.
Among the things desired in such zipper fasteners are:
1) A guarantee that the fly structure of the trousersor dun-garees is fully closed when the belt portion of the trousers or dungarees is finally hooked in closing position;
(2) That the slider will not move up or down accidentally or unexpectedly; and
(3) That there is a positive interlock between the parts of the fly structure of the trousers or dungarees and the pull tab of the zipper.
Several attempts have been made along this line but the results have been only partially successful.
Accordingly it is the primary object of the present invention to provide a slider for a zipper fastener wherever used to fasten edges of openings such as the openings in garments, bags and other devices, in which all of the above problems have been solved and at the same time a slider type fastener has been provided that is efficient and effective in use, having in combination all of the desirable features of such a slider type fastener.
Another object of the invention is to provide a slider for a zipper fastener that is economical to manufacture and easy to operate.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to opened, with a zipper fastener having a slider embodying one form of my invention applied thereto.

FIG. 18 is a front elevational view of the keeper member and slider of FIG. 16 in closed operative position applied to the fly structure of a trousers, parts being shown broken away.
Referring now to the various views of the drawings, in FIG. 1 the fly structure 10 of a pair of trousers 12 is shown. The fly structure 10 includes flaps 12 and 14, continuing into the ends 16 and 18 respectively of a belt portion 20 of the trousers. Fabric loops 22 are shown secured across the belt portion for use with a separate fastening belt (not shown). As usual a metal plate 24 is secured to one end of the belt portion 20 between the plies of material of said belt portion. One end of plate 24 has a looped formation 26 which protrudes outwardly openings.
of the material of the belt portion and terminates in a hook 28 disposed parallel to the material of the belt portion on the inner surface of the belt portion. The hook 28 points away from the adjacent free end edge of the belt portion 20 for a purpose later to be described.
The flaps 12 and 14 of the fly structure are illustrated as being closable and openable by means of a slide fastener structure. The slide fastener structure includes confronting string tapes 30 and 32 secured to the flaps 12 and 14, respectively, by means of stitching 34 and 36. The tapes have the usual fastener mating elements or teeth 38. The elements or teeth are mounted on the confronting longitudinal edge portions 40 of the tapes 30 and 3 2, with said elements extending in alternating relation partially across the space intervening between the edge portions. The edge portions 40 carrying the elements 38 are extended within the outwardly opening sides of the slider in the usual manner.
The slider 42 constituting the present invention is illustrated as being part of the slide fastener structure. The slider has a body preferably made of sheet metal and consists of a front wing 44, a back Wing 46 connected together by a hollow neck portion 48. The wings with .the neck portion define guide channels extending along opposite sides thereof through which the mating fastener elements 38 pass during opening and closing of the zipper fastener.
Struck outwardly from the front wing 44 of the slider there are the spaced loops 54, 54 which provide side In accordance with the present invention, a novel pull tab 56 is provided that is rectangular in shape and formed of a piece of heavy sheet metal having an outstruck loop-shaped hook 58 adjacent one end thereof,'
thereby forming opposed pintles 60, 60. The pintles 60, 60 are pivoted in the side openings formed by the loops formed with a hole 76 midway its ends. 56a is adapted to be received in a keeper device 80 54, 54 in the body of the slider and the outstruck hook 58 engages between said loops 54, 54. A pair of spaced closed slots 62, 62 are formed in the body of the pull tab 56. A plate-like loop 64 is mounted on the pull tab 56, the mounting consisting of pointed spurs 66 formed integrally with the end flanges 6.8 on the loop inserted through the slot 62, 62 and bent angularly thereby fastening the loop in position closely spaced from the surface of the pull tab 56 as shown in FIG. 2.
In use, the flaps 12 and 14 of the fly structure of the trousers are adapted to be closed and opened by means of the slide fastener coacting with the hook 28 on the end 18 of the belt portion 20. This is accomplished by sliding the slider 42 upwardly or downwardly along the elements 38 by means of the pull tab 56, in the usual man ner. By reason of the improved construction, however, the ends 16 and 18 of the belt portion 20 cannot be fully closed until the slider 42 is in its uppermost position in order to fully close the flaps 12 and 14. When in this uppermost position as shown in FIG. 2, the flaps will be fully closed and the pull tab 56 will be positioned between the ends 16 and 18 of the belt portion 20, thereby positioning the loop 54 carried thereby to receive the hook 28 on the end 18 of the belt portion 20 so as to completely close the trousers at the front. If the loop 54 is not in alignment with the hook 28 it indicates to the wearer of the trousers that the flaps 12 and 14 of the fly structure are not fully closed and this failure can be remedied. This operation of completely closing the front of the trousers cannot take place unless the flaps 12 and 14 of the fly structure are fully closed due to the movement of the slider 42 to its uppermost position.
In FIG. 4, the modified form of the invention shown therein differs from the invention of FIG. 1 in that the pull tab 56 shown therein is formed with a hook 70 on the free end of the body thereof and a loop 72 is mounted on the inner surface of the end 16' of the belt portion 20' instead of a hook such as the hook 28 on the end 18 as in FIG. 1. Otherwise, the invention is similar and similar reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts.
When the slider 42 is in its uppermost position, the hook 70 is adapted to hook over the loop 72 to close the parts 12 and 14 of the fly structure and to prevent accidental movement of the slider.
The modified form of the invention shown in FIG. differs from the invention shown in FIG. 4 merely in that a hook 28" similar to hook 28 of FIG. 1 is fastened to the end 18" of the belt portion and the pull tab 56" is formed with a struckout loop 64" similar to loop 64 of FIG. 1.
When the slider 42" is in its uppermost position, the hook 70" is adapted to hook over the loop 72" to close the parts 12" and 14" of the fly structure and to prevent accidental movement of the slider, and the loop 64" is in position to receive the hook 28" for fully closing the belt portion 20" at the front of the trousers.
Referring now to the modified form of the invention shown in FIGS. 6 to 11, inclusive, this form differs from the form of FIG. 1 in that the hook 28a on the end 18a of the belt portion 20a is longer and narrower. The pull tab 560! is slightly narrower than the pull tab 56 and is rounded at its free end. Furthermore, in place of a loop on the pull tab such as the loop 64, the pull tab 56a is The pull tab mounted on the end 1611 of the belt portion 20a.
The keeper device 80 comprises a hollow sheet metal rectangular hollow casing 82 having a flat back wall 84, fiat side walls 86, 86, curved top wall 88 and flat front wall 90 forming a continuation of the top wall. The bottom free end of the front wall slants outwardly from the plane of the body of the wall as indicated at 92. An elongated closed slot 94 is formed centrally of the front wall 90. A flat extension 96 is formed on the bottom end of the rear wall 84. Pointed spurs 98 are outstruck from the back wall 84 along the long edges thereof for clamping the keeper device to the belt portion 20a. The detent 100 projects from the inner surface of the rear wall 84 at the juncture of the slanting extension 96.
A lock member 101 formed of spring steel material is movably mounted in the casing 82. The lock member has a flat rectangular shaped plate like body 102 with a slanting offset end 104. An elongated strip 106 extends from the top of the plate outwardly around and downwardly spaced from the front thereof.
The strip terminates in a cross piece 108 bent inwardly toward the body of the plate. The outward round end at the top and the inwardly offset cross piece define a narrow loop 110, the bottom end 112 of the loop being closely spaced from the end of the body proper of the plate. The plate like body 102 when in position in the casing 82 abuts against the inner surface of the back wall 84 with the loop 110 behind the slot 94 in the front wall 90 of the casing 82 and with the slanted offset end 104 of the plate 102 behind the offset end 92 of th front wall 90 as best seen in FIG. 10.
In use, the parts 12a and 14a of the fly structure of FIG. 6 are closed or opened by sliding the slider 42a up or down. In order to close the parts, completely, the pull tab 56a is inserted upwardly into the keeper device between the lock member 101 and t he rear wall 84 of the casing 82 as shown in FIGS. 10 and 11 thereby pushing the lock member laterally and the loop 106 thereof outwardly through the slot 94 in the front wall of the casing 82, with the lower curved end 112 of the loop 106 above the bottom edge wall of the slot 94 as best seen in FIG. 11. When the pull tab 56a is in its uppermost position as shown in FIG. 11, the hole 76 therein slips over the detent on the rear Wall 84 of the casing thereby interlocking the pull tab in position, and at the same time the lock member 101 is pushed laterally outwardly through the slot 94 in the front wall 90 of the casing 82, with the lower curved end 112 of the loop 106 above the bottom edge wall of theslot 94 as best seen in FIG. 11. When the loop 106 is in this outward extended position, it serves as a socket to receive the hook 28a onthe end 18a of the belt portion 20a to thereby fully close the belt portion 20a at the front of the trousers. This operation of fully closing the front of the trousers cannot take place unless the flaps 12a and 14a of the fly structure are fully closed due to the movement of the slider to its uppermost position.
Another modified form of the invention is illustrated in FIG. 12 wherein a keeper 82 is suitably secured to the end 16' of the belt portion 20". The keeper 82' comprises a rectangular shaped flat plate 116 having a. top cross piece 118 embedded in the material of the belt portion 20", the plate 116 being disposed outside the material on the inner surface of the belt portion. An integral downwardly extending offset portion or hook 120' is formed on the top of the plate 116 at its front, and a round headed lug 122 extends forwardly of the plate at its bottom end.
The pull tab 56" comprises a rectangular flat plate 124 with an offset free end 126. Midway its ends, the plate 124 is formed with a detent 128 forming a socket in which is disposed a cotter-pin-shaped clip 130. A hook 28' similar to hook 28a of FIG. 6 is secured to the end 18 of the belt portion 20".
In using this form of the invention, the slider 42" is slid upwardly by means of the pull tab 56" until the tab is in position to be swung towards the keeper 82" and engage the socket 128 over the lug 122 on plate 116 whereupon the otfset end 126 of the pull tab engages under the bottom end edge of the offset hook 120 on plate 116 thereby forming a loop to interlock with the hook 28 on the end 18 of the belt portion thereby closing the parts of the trousers.
In FIGS. 13 to 15, inclusive, a still further modified form of the invention is illustrated. In this form, a male snap fastener element 134 is secured to the inner surface of the end 16x of the belt portion 20x by instruck spurs' In use, the pull tab 56x slides the slider 42x up-- war-dly into position to close the parts 12x and 14x of the fly structure and by swinging the pull tab towards the male snap fastener element 134 the pin 140 is suf ficiently large to engage thereover holding the slider 42x against accidental movement. The end 18x with the female snap fastener element 138 is then swung over the pin 140, the element 138 being sufliciently large to permit this operation, thereby closing the front of the trousers.
In FIGS. 16 to 18, inclusive, yet another modified form of the invention is illustrated. Herein the end 16xx of the belt portion 20xx is provided with a keeper 82xx in the shape of a rectangular plate 150 secured to the material of the end 16xx by means of instruck spurs 152. The plate is formed along its long bottom edge with upturned hooks 154, 154 at the ends of the plate, the hook being open at the top. The end 18xx is provided with a hook 28xx secured thereto by pointed spurs 156, 156.
The pull tab 56xx comprises a rectangular flat shaped plate 158 with a cross-piece 160 at the free end thereof. An inverted L-shaped latch member 162 is pivotally attached to the crosspiece 160 and depends downwardly along the plate 158. The bottom end of the latch member is formed with a laterally extended hook 164. The hook normally hangs across the front of one long side of the plate 158 as best seen in FIG. 17. The latch is urged into this position by a spring finger 166 secured to the top edge of the cross-piece 160.
In using this form of the invention, the pull tab 56xx pulls the slider 42xx to topmost position closing the parts of the fly structure. The cross-piece 160 with latch member 1'62 attached is swung over the hooks 154, 154 and pulled downwardly slightly thereby interlocking the pull tab with the keeper holding the slider against accidental movement. The end 182m of the belt portion 20xx of the trousers is then swung with its hook 28xx across the pull tab, the hook 28xx sliding the latch member 162 ofl of the pull tab and then slipping around the body of the plate 158 of the pull tab thereby fully closing the front of the trousers. The spring finger 166 restores the latch member to a position where the hook 164 of the latch member is underneath the hook 28xx holding the hook 2810: against displacement.
While the invention has been described and illustrated, embodied in a trousers, it will be understood that the Zipper fastener might be used for closing openings in any other garment or device such as dungarees, skirts, dresses, bras, golf bags, hand bags or other like devices.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is: a
1. In a trousers, a fly structure including a pair of overlapped flap portions, a slide fastener comprising a pair of element carrying tapes, mating elements carried by said tapes, a slider opening and closing said mating elements, one of said tapes being secured to one of said flap portions and the other of said tapes being secured to the other of said flap portions, with each of said. tapes being joined to its flap by a line of stitching closely adjacent to the ele- 6 ments carried by the tapes, the mating elements of the two tapes spanning the gap between the flap portions when the slider is in its closed position, with said slider comprising a body having a front wing, aback wing spaced therefrom, a hollow neck portion connecting the end of the front and back wings, said wings and neck portion defining guide channels to receive the mating elements during the closing and opening operations, an elongated thin pull tab pivotally mounted on the body of the slider midway its ends, a hook on the free end of said pull tab, a loop outstruck from the body of the pull tab disposed longitudinally of the body -of the pull tab, a loop on one of the flap portions in line withthe movement of the slider, said loop opening upwardly and downwardly, and a hook on the other of said flap portions, the hook on said pull tab adapted to engage said loop to prevent accidental movement of the slider, said hook adapted to engage the loop on said pull tab to ensure complete closure of the flap portions, when the hook is engaged in the loop on the fly portion.
2. In a trousers, a fly structure including a pair of overlapped flap portions, a slide fastener comprising a pair of element carrying tapes, mating elements carried by said tapes, a slider opening and closing said mating elements, one of said tapes being secured to one of said flap portions and the other of said tapes being secured to the other of said flap portions, with each of said tapes being joined to its flap by a line of stitching closely adjacent to the elements carried by the tapes, the mating elements of the two tapes spanning the gap between the flap portions when the slider is in its closed position, with said slider comprising a body having a front Wing, a back wing spaced therefrom, a hollow neck portion connecting the end of the front and back wings, said wings and neck portions defining guide channels to receive the mating elements during the closing and opening operations, an elongated thin pull tab pivotally mounted on the body of the slider midway its ends, said pull tab having a hole centrally thereof, the free end of said pull tab being rounded, a keeper device on one of said flap portions at the top thereof in line with the movement of the slider, said keeper device comprising a hollow casing including a rear wall having a detent thereon, a front wall with an elongated closed slot therein, said casing being open at the bottom, a spring metal locking member bodily movable in said casing, said locking member including a loop portion disposed behind the slot in the front wall of the casing, said loop por tion disposed in the path of movement of the pull tab and adapted to be moved outwardly through the slot in the front wall of the casing when the slider is in uppermost operative position, the hole in said pull tab adapted to engage the detent on the rear wall of the casing when the slider is in uppermost operative position to prevent accidental movement of the slider and a hook on the other of said flap portions adapted to engage the loop on the locking member when the slider is in upper-most operative position to ensure complete closure of the flap portion.
3. In a trousers, a fly structure including a pair of overlapped flap portions, a slide fastener comprising a pair of element carrying tapes, mating elements carried by said tapes, a slider opening and closing said mating elements, one of said tapes being secured to one of said flap portions and the other of said tapes being secured to the other of said flap portions, with each of said tapes being joined to its flap by a line of stitching closely adjacent to the elements carried by the tapes, the mating elements of the two tapes spanning the gap betwen the flap portions when the slider is in its closed posiiton, with said slider compirsing a body having a front wing, a back wing spaced therefrom, a hollow neck portion connecting the end of the front and back wings, said wings and neck portion defining guide channels to reecive the mating elements during the closing and opening operations, an elongated thin pull tab pivotally mounted on the body of the slider midway its ends, said pull tab having a hole centrally thereof, the free end of said pull tab being rounded, a keeper device on one of said flap portions at the top thereof in line with the movement of the slider, said keeper device comprising a hollow casing including a rear wall having a detent thereon, a front wall with an elongated closed slot therein, said casing being open at the bottom, a spring metal locking member bodily movable in said casing, said locking member including a loop portion disposed behind the slot in the front wall of the casing, said loop portion disposed in the path of movement of the pull tab and adapted to be moved outwardly through the slot in the front wall of the casing when the slider is in uppermost operative position, the hole in said pull tab adapted to engage the detent on the rear wall of the casing when the slider is in upper most operative position to prevent accidental movement of the slider.
4. In a trousers, a fly structure including a pair of overlapped fiap portions, a slide fastener comprising a pair of element carrying tapes, mating elements carried by said tapes, a slider opening and closing said mating elements, one of said tapes being secured to one of said flap portions and the other of said tapes being secured to the other of said flap portions, with each of said tapes being joined to its flap by a line of stitching closely adjacent to the elements carried by the tapes, the mating elements of the two tapes spanning the gap between the flap portions whenthe slider is in its closed position, with said slider comprising a body having a front wing, a back wing spaced therefrom, a hollow neck portion connecting the end of the front and back wings, said wings and neck portion defining guide channels to receive the mating elements during the closing and opening operations, an elongated thin pull tab pivotally mounted on the body of the slider midway its ends, the free end of said pull tab being offset from the plane of the body thereof, said pull tab having a socket centrally thereof, a spring clip in said detent, a keeper device on one of said flap portions, at the top thereof, in line with the movement of the slider, said keeper device comprising a rectangular shaped plate with a crosspiece at thetop thereof, said plate having an offset portion at its top end extending forwardly and downwardly, and a pin protruding from the bottom end of the plate, the offset end on the pull tab adapted to aline with the bottom end of the offset portion on the keeper plate when the slider is in uppermost operative position, said engaging-offset portions providing a loop, and a hook on the other of said flap portions adapted to engage the loop formed by said offset portions when the slider is in uppermost operative position thereby ensuring complete closure of the flap portions and thereby preventing accidental movement of the slider.
5. In a trousers, a fly structure including a pair of overlapped flap portions, a slide fastener comprising a pair of element carrying tapes, mating elements carried by said tapes, a slider opening and closing said mating elements, one of said tapes being secured to one of said flap portions and the other of said tapes being secured to the other of said flap portions, with each of said tapes being joined to its flap by a line of stitching closely adjacent to the elements carried by the tapes, the mating elements of the two tapes spanning the gap between the flap portions when the slider is in its closed position, with said slider comprising a body having a front wing, a back wing spaced therefrom, a hollow neck portion connecting the end of the front and back wings, said wings and neck portion defining guide channels to receive the mating elements during the closing and opening operations, an elongated thin pull tab pivotally mounted on the body'of the slider midway its ends, a round headed pin carried on the free end of the pull tab, a male snap fastener element on one of a size to be received in the round head pin on the pull tab, and a female snap fastener element on the other flap portion adapted to receive the round head pin, said pin when in position on the male snap fastener element preventing accidental movement of the slider and closing the flap portions, said female snap fastener element when on the pin closing the front of the trousers.
6. In a trousers, a fly structure including a-pair of overlapped flap portions, a slide fastener comprising a pair of element carrying tapes, mating elements carried by said tapes, a slider opening and closing said mating elements, one of said tapes being secured to one of said flap portions and the other of said tapes being secured to the other of said flap portions, with each of said tapes being joined to its flap by a line of stitching closely adjacent to the elements carried by the tapes, the mating elements of the two tapes spanning the gap between the flap portions when the slider is in its closed position, with said slider comprising a body having a front wing, a back wing spaced therefrom, a hollow neck portion connecting the end of the front and back wings, said wings and neck portion defining guide channels to receive the mating elements during the closing and opening operations, an elongated thin pull tab pivotally mounted on the body of the slider midway its ends, a cross piece on the free end of the body of the pull tab, an inverted L-shaped latch member pivotally mounted on the cross piece and depending along the body of the pull tab, a hook on the bottom end of the latch member, a spring member on the top edge of the cross piece urging the latch member to position its hook across the body of the pull tab, a keeper device on one of said flap portions at the top thereof in line with the movement of the slider, said keeper device comprising a rectangular shaped plate, spaced upturned hooks along one long edge of the plate, the cross piece on the pull tab adapted to seat in the hooks on said keeper plate when the slider is in uppermost operative position to prevent accidental movement of the slider, a hook on the other of said flap portions, said latter hook adapted to displace the latch memher on the pull tab and hook itself around the pull tab when the slider is in uppermost operative position to fully close the front of the trousers.

Claims (1)

1. IN A TROUSERS, A FLY STRUCTURE INCLUDING A PAIR OF OVERLAPPED FLAP PORTIONS, A SLIDE FASTENER COMPRISING A PAIR OF ELEMENT CARRYING TAPES, MATING ELEMENTS CARRIED BY SAID TAPES, A SLIDER OPENING AND CLOSING SAID MATING ELEMENTS, ONE OF SAID TAPES BEING SECURED TO ONE OF SAID FLAP PORTIONS AND THE OTHER OF SAID TAPES BEING SECURED TO THE OTHER OF SAID FLAP PORTIONS, WITH EACH OF SAID TAPES BEING JOINED TO ITS FLAP BY A LINE OF STITCHING CLOSELY ADJACENT TO THE ELEMENTS CARRIED BY THE TAPES, THE MATING ELEMENTS OF THE TWO TAPES SPANNING THE GAP BETWEEN THE FLAP PORTIONS WHEN THE SLIDER IS IN ITS CLOSED POSITION, WITH SAID SLIDER COMPRISING A BODY HAVING A FRONT WING, A BACK WING SPACED THEREFROM, A HOLLOW NECK PORTION CONNECTING THE END OF THE FRONT AND BACK WINGS, SAID WINGS AND NECK PORTION DEFINING GUIDE CHANNELS TO RECEIVE THE MATING ELEMENTS DURING THE CLOSING AND OPENING OPERATIONS, AN ELONGATED THIN PULL TAP PIVOTALLY MOUNTED ON THE BODY OF THE SLIDER MIDWAY ITS ENDS, A HOOK ON THE FREE END OF SAID PULL TAB, A LOOP OUTSTRUCK FROM THE BODY OF THE PULL TAB DISPOSED LONGITUDINALLY OF THE BODY OF THE PULL TAB, A LOOP ON ONE OF THE FLAP PORTIONS IN LINE WITH THE MOVEMENT OF THE SLIDER, SAID LOOP OPENING UPWARDLY AND DOWNWARDLY, AND A HOOK ON THE OTHER OF SAID FLAP PORTIONS, THE HOOK ON SAID PULL TAB ADAPTED TO ENGAGE SAID LOOP TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL MOVEMENT OF THE SLIDER, SAID HOOK ADAPTED TO ENGAGE THE LOOP ON SAID PULL TAB TO ENSURE COMPLETE CLOSURE OF THE FLAP PORTIONS, WHEN THE HOOK IS ENGAGED IN THE LOOP ON THE FLY PORTION.
