The invention relates to interlocking slide fasteners and particularly. to the operating sliders therefor, in which the pull device or pull tab se-'- cured to the slide for effecting the interlocking r, of the fastener element is .so constructed as to constitute a means for locking the slider after it has performed its function of interlocking the fastener elements in position.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a pull tab for the slider of an interlockin slide fastener structure which will function as a spring to effect a closure for the collar of a shirt,
the waistband of skirts, trousers, and like garments. A more particular object of the invention is to provide a pull tab for such slider formed of asingle piece of material so constructed as to have, when assembled with a slider, a spring action. The utility of the tab, when applied to a slide fastener structure upon a shirt, blouse, skirt to or pair of trousers, is substantially the same as that of a button, it being utilized in effecting the closure of the garment by being inserted into a button hole and thereafter pressed down so as to form a closure and prevent the collar or waist- :5 band of the garment from opening.
In the application of slider fastener structures of the prior art to garments such as a shirt or a skirt, the garment is provided with a button on the shirt collar or on the waistband. In the 0 former instance, a collar button passing through two buttonholes is sometimes used. In accordance with my invention, the necessity of using buttons as the closure means is entirely eliminated and the construction of such garments is, 5 therefore, simplified. One advantage of my inveiition thus lies in the, saving of money by the elimination of the necessity of providing buttons; other advantages reside in the facility with which the closure of the garment can be effected without recourse to collar buttons or the like and the elimination of attendant annoyance, for instance, in the loss of a collar button.
In its broadest aspect, a pull tab constructed in accordance with my invention is constituted 5 of a single piece of metal punched from spring bronze or brass which, in two embodiments of the invention illustrated and described, is then sheared and deformed in a particular manner for application to the slider, and in the other of the.
I three embodiments illustrated and described, is bent so as to constitute overlapped parts of a single pull tab for application to the slider. The pull tab in all of the embodiments is so constructed and formed as to have a spring action.
; Particular embodiments of my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 shows the application of one form of my invention to a waistband of a skirt or of a pair of trousers to effect the closure thereof without the use of buttons; Fig. 2 is a plan view of one embodiment of my invention; Fig. 3 is a side view. partly in section, of the pull tab constructed in accordance with my invention and applied to the slider, showing the pull tab in position both normal and actingas the closure means; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the pull tab before deformation; Fig. 5 is a side view of the pull tab showing in dotted lines its form after deformation; Fig. 6 is a plan view of a second embodiment of my invention; Fig. 7 illustrates the op-- eration of said second embodiment with three positions of the pull tab being shown; Fig. 8 is a plan view of the punched-out blank of which the pull tab of such second embodiment is formed; Fig. 9 is a plan view of still another em-.
bodiment of my invention; Fig. 10 is a vertical section through the pull tab and slider of the last named embodiment of my invention showing the pull tab in normal and in locking position; and Fig. 11 shows my novel pull tab structure in position upon the collar of a shirt to effect the closure thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which similar reference characters identify similar parts in the several views, and more particularly to Figs. 1-5 thereof, l2 designates the slider controlling the engagement and disengagement of the interlocking fastener elements. Such slider comprises top and bottom wings l3 and I4 respectively connected by the integral neck [5 and the cam l6 effecting spreading of the fastener elements. slider, by means of the protruding boss or lug I1, is attached the pull device or tab l8.
Such pull tab may be punched from spring bronze or brass provided with an elongated aperture l9 and a circular aperture 20, the tab being sheared along its center line between the apertures l9 and as well as between the rivet elements 2| and 22 near its upper extremity.
The pull tab is then deformed to the form shown in Fig. 5, the upper and lower extremities thereof being bent in opposite directions to substantially the extent indicated. The pull tab is applied to the slider l2 by means of the two rivet elements 2! and 22 which straddle the depending portion of lug IT. The material of the tab immediately below the rivets 2| and 22 is rounded at 25 and 26 to fit the recesses 23 and 24, the difference between the rounded surfaces 25 and To the top wing l'3 of the 26 and the width of the elongated aperture l9 constituting the clearance.
The operation of the slider and pull tab as applied to the waistband of a skirt or of a pair of trousers provided with a slide fastener structure, is illustrated in Fig. 1. In such application, the pull tab is brought to the upper extremity of the slide fasteners, the pull tab being in its normal position shown in dotted. lines in Fig. 3. When the slider has reached its uppermost position, effecting an interlocking of the slide fastener elements, it is passed through the buttonhole 21 and depressed to the position thereof shown in full lines in F g. 3.
,It will thus be seen that the pull tab in its normal position extends outwardly from the slider l2 in effecting the interlocking engagement of the fastener elements and is brought thereafter to the closure .position by its spring action, in which the rounded surfaces 25 and 25 are compressed during the bending operation so as to have them enter the recesses 23 and 24, being sprung into such recesses as soon as such rounded surfaces are opposite the upper extremities of' such recesses. After being positioned so as thus 'to effect a closure of the waistband of the garment, the pull tab may be raised from its full line position shown in Fig. 3 to its dotted line position only by a positive action to cause the rounded surfaces 25 and 26 to snap out of engagement within the recesses 23 and 24.. The
bent or folded along the horizontal median line thereof 28 to constitute a pull tab having two overlying portions 29 and 30. The slider, with a single feature of difference, is substantially like the slider of thefirst embodiment, the pull tab'being secured to the protruding boss or lug of the slider by means of the oblong apertures 3| of thepull tab. The slight difference in the slider of this embodiment of my invention and that of the first embodiment is that such protruding bos or lug is provided with a square slot 32 to accommodate the tab. The pull tab is shown in full lines in Fig. 7 in the closure position in which the upper extremities of the two parts thereof 29 and 30 are separated by their inherent spring action, with the extremities of the two parts pressing against the inner side faces ofthe slot. The pull tab may be brought into normal, operative position in which it is at right angles to, the slider, and also to the opposite vertical closure position, so as to extend upwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7. The slider will remain in any one of these three positions by reason of the'action of the twoportions. thereof in which they function as a spring being forced apart so as to have their extremities press against the flat inner surfaces of the slot. The pull tab. will remain in the particular position of the three illustrated because in any turning motion, the tab would have to overcome the spring'resistance due to the fact that the portions thereof 29 and 30 must be brought together while the Pull tfib is removed from any of the three positions. Thus, as soon as suchpull tab is removed from the position thereof ,shown in full lines in Fig. 7, I the two portions thereof 29 and 30 will be brought together so as tocontact each other and will be retained in such contacting position until brought to a position nearer to that in which the pulltab is at right angles to the slider than to the vertical position thereof. As soon as the tab has' been brought to a position in which it is at an and described for effecting the closure of a shirt collar or the waistband of a garment, substantially as described with respect to the first em bodiment of my invention.
Still another embodiment of my invention is illustrated in Figs. 9-11. In such embodiment, the pull tab is likewise punched from spring bronze or brass, the material being sheared in two placeslongitudinally of the tab so as to form a tongue 33. The pull tab is then given the form as shown in Fig. 10 by bending the upper and lower extremities thereof in opposite directions.
The spring pull tab illustrated in Figs. 9-11 functions substantially like that shown in Figs. 6-8 inclusive, the only difference being that in the embodiment of Figs. 6-8, the tab, by its duplex structure, acts on each side of the aperture in the lug of the slider, while in the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 9-11, the spring, constituted of the tongue 33, formed in the tab 35, acts upon the top surface of the lug 34 of the slider.
Thus, when the pull tab f Figs. 941 is in its closure position, the tongue 33 rests against the outer face of the slider lug and as it is being brought to the upper, normal, or slider operative, position, illustrated in dotted-lines in Fig.
v 10, the upper extremity of the tongue 33 slides along the curved surface of the lug to the top surface thereof, in which position it will retain the pull tab in such dotted line position, so that the pull tab may be passed through the buttonhole of the collar or garment and then brought back to its closure position.
It Will be noted that the slider of the last described embodiment of vmy invention differs from the slider of the first two embodiments described in that the protruding boss or lug 34 thereof is formed. with an outer surface constituting a cam upon which the upper extremity sembly of the various elements'therecf, may be made without departing from the invention.
I claim:
1. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channeled body having an outer surface, a'lug on said outer surface, a pull tab connected to said lug and adapted to effect the closure of the collar or waistband of a garment or the like, said pull tab having a body sheared along a portion of its longitudinal center line so as to form two spring-like elements of said body, said elements having the outer portions thereof formed to provide two inwardly extending projections adapted to pivotally engage said lug, the material 0f the tab immediately adjacent the projections being rounded, a pair of recesses provided on said lug and into which said rounded portions of the tab elements are adapted to spring to lock said tab relative to said lug until positively moved from such position.
2. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channeled body having an outer surface, 9. lug on said outer surface, a pull tab connected to said lug and adapted to effect the closure of the collar or waistband of a garment or the like, said pull tab having an apertured body sheared along a portion of its longitudinal center line so as to form two spring-like elements of said body separated by said aperture, said elements having the outer portions thereof formed to provide two inwardly extending projections whereby the tab is secured to the lug of the slider, the material of the tab immediately adjacent the projections being rounded, said lug being provided with an aperture for receiving said projections and a pair of recesses adjacent said aperture into which the rounded portions of the tab elementsare adapted to be sprung, whereby, the pull tab is locked in such position until positively moved therefrom.
3. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channeled body having an outer surface, a lug on said outer surface, a pull tab connected to said lug and adapted to effect the closure of the collar or waistband of a garment or the like, said pull tab being cut from a blank of metal material and folded upon its horizontal median line to form two overlapping sections normally spaced apart at their free ends, said lug being provided with a square slot adapted to receive a part, at least, of the free ends of such sections and to cooperate with the same to enablesaid tab to assume at least two positions, one for effecting the interlocking of the fastener elements, in which position, upon completion, in cooperation with said slider, of its interlocking function, it is adapted for passage through an aperture in such collar or waistband, and one in which it is disposed substantially at right angles to such first position for effecting the closure of said collar or waistband.
4. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channeled body having an outer surface, a lug on said outer surface provided with a square slot, a pull tab connected to said lug and adapted to effect the closure of the collar or waistband of a garment or the like, said pull tab having two overlapping portions joined together at the outer end of the tab so that the inner ends thereof are normally in spaced relation and yieldingly resist forces tending to bring them together, said spaced ends of the tab being positioned, in part at least, in said square slot and cooperating with the latter to enable said tab to assume at least two positions, one its normal operative position, in which it is adapted for passagethrough an aperture in such collar or waistband, and one in which it is disposed substantially at right angles to such first position for effecting the closure of said collar or waistband and to maintain either of such positions until'positive turning movement of the tab to overcome the spring action of its component parts.
5. A slider as claimed in claim 3, in which the two folded elements of the pull tab have their extremities press against the flat inner surfaces of the square slot in the slider and to beretained in such contacting position until the tab has been brought to a position in which. it is at an the slider and provided with a rectangular re cess, a pull tab connected to said lug and including two spring members joined together at their outer ends and being disposed in spaced relation at their inner ends, the spaced ends of said spring members being engaged in'said rectangular recess and cooperating with the latter to positively hold said tab in at least two positions, one in which the tab is disposed transversely to said lugand the other in which said tab is disposed substantially in alignment with said lug.
7. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channeled body having an outer surface, a lug on said outer surface, a pull tab connected to said lug and adapted to effect the closure of the collar or waistband of a garment or the like, said pull tab including two spring members, each, of which engages with said lug throughout the pivotal movement of said pull .tab, and means on said lug adapted to coact with said spring members to positively lock said pull tab in at least two positions, one in which threading of said pull tab through an aperture in a collar or waistband is facilitated and the other in which said pull tab effects the closure of said collar or waistband.
8. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channeled body having an outer surface, a lug on said outer surface, a pull tab connected to said lug and being sheared lengthwise to provide a pair of spring-like elements adapted to engage the side surfaces of said lug, and means on said lug arranged to engage with a portion of said spring members spaced from the pivotal axis of said pull tab to maintain said pull tab in a predetermined position relative to said channeled body until positively removed therefrom.
9. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channeled slider body provided with a camming surface positioned for engagement by a portion of the pull tab upon movement of the latter relative to said slider body, a pull tab pivotally connected to said slider body and including a movable spring member having a free end portion adapted to engage with said camming surface and to bear thereagainst with a spring action in the pivotal movements of the pull tab, said camming surface being formed to vary the tension of said movable spring member when the pull tab is moved from one position to another and to maintain the free end portion of said spring member'and consequently said pull tab in either of a plurality of positions with respect to said slider body, including one in which the tab extends substantially lengthwise of the slider body and one in which it is disposed substantially at right angles to said slider body.
10., Aslid'er for separable fasteners comprising a channeled slider bodyprovided with fixed surface portions positioned for engagement by a portion of the pull tab upon movement of the latter relative to said slider body, and a pull tab pivotally connected to said slider body, said pull tab being composed of asingle piece of metal material and including a spring member integral with the ,material of said pull tab at a point spaced from the pivoted end of said pull tab and having a free end portion adapted to engage with and to bear against the fixed surface portions of the slider body throughout the range of movement of said pull tab, said fixed surface portions of the slider body being formed to vary the tension of said spring member when the pull tab is .moved from one position to another and to maintain the free end portion of said member and consequently said pull tab in either of a pluralityof positions with respect to said slider body,.including one in which the tab extends substantially lengthwise of the slider body and one in which it is disposed substantially at rightangles to said slider body.
11. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channeled slider body, a lug fixed to said slider body and provided with an outer cam surface, a
pull tab pivotally connected at one end to said lu said pull tab being composed of a single piece of metal material and including a spring tongue integral with the material of said pull tab at a point spaced from the pivoted end of said pull tab, the free end portion of said tongue [being adapted to engage with and to bear against the cam surface of said lug in the movements of said pull tab, said cam surface being formed to vary the tension of said spring tongue during the movements of said pull tab relative thereto and to maintain the free end portion of said tongue and consequently said pull tab in a predetermined position relative to said lug until positively removed therefrom.
12. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channeled slider body, a lug fixed to said slider body and provided with an outer cam surface, a pull tab movably connected at one end to said lug, said pull tab being composed of a single piece of metal material and including a centrally disposed longitudinally extending tongue integral with the material of said pull tab at' a point spaced from the connected end of said tab and a longitudinally extending tab portion on each side of said tongue, said longitudinally extending tab portions, inthe region of the free end of said tongue, being disposed on each side of said lug and the free end of said tongue bearing against the cam surface of said lug with a spring action, said cam surface being formed to vary the tension of said spring tongue during its movements relative thereto and to coact with said tongue to maintain said pull tab in a predetermined position relative to said lug until positively removed therefrom. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channelled body having an outer surface, a lug on said outer surface, a pull tab movably connected to said lug and including a spring member adapted to engage with and bear against said lug with a spring action throughout the range of' the latter is moved with said pull tab from oneposition to another with respect to said lug and co-acting with said spring member to positively maintain the latter and consequently said pull tab in at least two positions, one in which the tab is disposed transversely to said lug and the other in which the pull tab is disposed in line with said me.
14. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channelled body having an outer surface, a lug on said outersurface, a pull tab movably connected to said, lug and having spring means adapted 'to engage and to bear against said lug with a spring action during the movements of said pull tab relative to said lug and means on said lug engageable by said spring means and adapted to vary the tension of said spring means and to maintain the latter and consequently said pull tab in a. predetermined position relative to said lug until positively removed therefrom. 15. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channelled body having an outer surface, 9. lug on said outer surface, a pull tab including means pivotally connecting it to said lug and spring mean adapted to engage and to bear against said lug with a spring action during the pivotal movements of said pull tab relative to said lug and means on said lug in the path of movement of said spring means withrespect to said lug and engageable thereby, said last-mentioned means being adapted to maintain said spring means and consequentlysaid pull tab in a predetermined position relative to said lug until positively removed therefrom.
16. A slider for separable fasteners comprising a channelled slider body provided with fixed surface portions positioned for engagement by a portion of the pull tab upon movement of the slider relative to said slider body, a pull tab pivotally connected to said slider body and including a movable spring member having a free end portion adapted to engage with said fixed surface portions of the slider body in the pivotal movements of the pull tab and to bear against such portions under the tension of said spring member, said fixed surface portions being formed to displace said free end portion so as to increase the tension of said spring member when said pull tab is pivoted from a predetermined position rela-' tive to said slider body, whereby said pull tab is maintained in said predetermined position until positively removed therefrom.
