. Claims.
This invention relates to sliders for use in coupling and uncoupling the stringers or chains of separable fasteners. More particularly, the invention relates to what is termed lock sliders employing a spring wire lock element which also forms means for coupling a finger piece or pull with the slider, whereby in moving the slider in both directions on the stringer, the lock element will be moved by the finger piece or pull into inoperative position. The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed, and in which the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views; and in which:

With lock sliders of the general type and kind under consideration, the construction of the slider as well as the lock element has been some-, what costly and has usually presented, on the wall of the slider, a protruding body which has been objectionable from the standpoint of increasing the over-all thickness of the slider and presented difliculties from the standpoint of laundering garments to which the fastener has been attached.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide not only an inexpensive lock slider construction, but also one which presents a reasonably flat upper surface which permits free passage of the slider through laundering apparatus, particularly ringers, ironers and the like.

The slider i2 comprises a channeled body formed by a, top wall l3 anda bottom wall 14' joined at the wide end of the slider by a connecting web or frog 15. The top and bottom walls have, at side edge portions thereof, inturned flanges it which engage the links or scoops H oi the stringers. 4
The outer surface of the top wall i3 is provided with a transverse groove or recess II, the walls of which curve upwardly and outwardly where they meet the fiat surfaces l8 and I! of the narrow and wide end portions of the slider. Two transversely spaced apertures 20 are formed in the wall l3 and these apertures open outwardly through the surface i8 and into the channel 2| of the slider.
Arranged upon the surface I!) is an outwardly projecting rivet pin portion 22, which is arranged within and spaced from a raised yoke-shaped wall or flange portion 23 having the more or less parallel ends 23a extending in the direction of the narrow end portion of the slider, as clearlyseen in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
In the construction shown, the slider isin the form of a die casting and, when so made, the pin 22 is an integral part of the casting andis cast unheaded and is afterwards headed over, as seen at 24, note Fig. 3, in securing the spring wire member 25 in position.
The member 25 form what may be termed a combined lock elementand pull mounting. In the construction shown, the member 25 is formed from a single strand of material, the central portion of which is shaped to form a ring 26 en circling the pin 22 .and fitting within the ring portion 21 of the wall or flange 23. Extending from the ring portion 25 are two rods 28 arranged in parallel relationship to each other and terminating at their ends in laterally directed extensions 29 having downwardly directed pin portions 30 at the ends thereof.
The :pin portions 30 form the lock elements of the slider which extend through thea apertures 20 into the channel 2| by the normal spring properties of the member 25. Rods 28 are held' in close proximity to each other between parallel. ends 22a of the walls or flanges 23. These rods form, in conjunction with the recess 11, the loop for receiving and coupling the finger piece or pull 3| with the slider. In the construction shown, it will be apparent that the pull 38 will lie-flatly along the slider within the limits of the member 25, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Asa matter 01' fact, the entire structure of the slider produces a flat surface in alinement with outer surfaces of the member 25 and the'wall or flange portion 23 being modified only by the slightly protruding head 24 of the coupling pin 22; This fiat construction adapts the slider for use on appanel which may require laundering.
The rods 28 of the member may be unattached in certain uses. However, in other uses they may be secured together in any desired manner.
' It will be understood that, in operating the slider along the stringers, a pull on the flnger piece, 3i will operate upon the rods 28 to raise the lock elements or pins 30 out of the channel II of the slider, thus providing free movement of the slider on the stringers. In this flexure of the member 25, the rods 28 are free to pass vertically between the wall portions 230, the pull being assisted in this operation by the upwardly curved wall portions of the recess i'l. 5
It will be apparent that the transverse alinement of the portions 30 may be staggered with respect to each other to flt between links of opposed stringers. In this connection, it will also I be understood that when the spring arms or rods 28 are unattached, each element 30 will be capable of independent operation in assuming a locked engagement with the links of the strin ers. Asa matter offact, one element 30 is sumcient to produce the desired locking of the slider and from this standpoint only one element need, in fact, be employed.
In assemblage'of the member 25 with the slider, it will be understood that the looped end 28 is placed in the recess formed between the wall 23 and the unheaded rivet pin 22. When the member is in this position, with the rods 28 disposed between the extensions 23a and the pins 30 in the apertures 20, the rivet pin 22 is headed, as at 24, securely retaining the member 25 against displacement.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A lock slider for separable fasteners comprising a channeled slider body, one wall of said body having outer flat surfaces at the wide and narrow end portions thereof, the outer surface of said wall having a recess intermediate said flat surfaces, an elongated resilient member arranged upon both of said flat surfaces and bridging said recess, said member having an axis lying in a plane parallel to said flat surfaces and said member being normally retained, by the resilience thereof, in engagement with said surfaces,
one end of said member having a lock element entering the channel of the.slider body at the narrow end portion thereof, and means on the wide end portion of the slider body engaging the other end portion of said member for retaining the same against displacement from the slider body. I
2. The combination with a channeled slider body for separable fasteners, of a combination lock and finger piece coupling member, said member being arranged centrally, longitudinally and flatly on and normally in engagement with the outer surfaces of one wall of said body, means securing one end portion of the member to said wall of the slider body leaving the other end portion thereof freely flexible toward and from said wall of said body, the last named end portion of said member having lock means normally extending into the channel of said body, a finger piece engaging said member intermediate end portions thereof, and said wall of the slider body being recessed intermediate the end portions of said member to receive said flnger piece and to normally maintain said member in said flat relationship upon and engagement with the outer surface of said wall.
3. A lock slider for separable fasteners, said spaced walls having wide and narrow end portions, the narrow end portion of an aperture opening into the channel of said slider body, the wide end of said wall having a rivet pin, a substantially yoke-shaped flange on said wall in spaced relation to said pin forming a socket between the pin and flange, a strand-like member having a central looped portion arranged in said socket and retained against displacement from said wall by said rivet pin, end portions of said strand member extending from the central loop being disposed in parallel relation to each other and terminating in laterally extending free ends, and at least one of said free ends having a projecting lock element extending through said aperture into the channel of said body.
4. A look slider for separable fasteners, said slider comprising a channeled body defined by spaced walls having wide and'narrow end portions, the narrow end portion of one wall having an aperture opening into the channel of said slider body, the wide end of said wall having a rivet pin, a substantially yoke-shaped flange on said wall in spaced relation to said pin forming a socket between the pin and flange, a strand-like member having a central looped portion arranged in said socket and retained against displacement from said wall by said rivet pin, end portions of said strand member extending from the central loop being disposed in parallel relation to each other and terminating in laterally extending free ends, at least one of said free ends having a projecting lock element extending through said aperture into the channel of said body, and a pull en aging the parallel portions of said member.
5. A look slider for separable fasteners, said slider comprising a channeled body defined by spaced walls having wide and narrow end portions, the narrow end portion of one wall having an aperture opening into the channel of said slider body, the wide end of said wall having a rivet pin, a substantially yoke-shaped flange on said wall in spaced relation to said pin forming a socket between the pin and flange, a strand-like member having a central looped portion arranged in said socket and retained against displacement from said wall by said rivet pin, end portions of said strand member extending from the central loop being disposed in parallel relation to each other and terminating in laterally extending free ends, at least one of said free ends having a projecting lock element extending through said aperture into the channel of said body, a pull engaging the parallel portions of said member, and said wall. of the slider body having a transverse recess for receiving that portion of the pull enusing said member.
6. A slider for separable fasteners, said slider comprising a channeled body defined by spaced walls having narrow and wide end portions, one wall of said body having a transverse recess inthe outer surface thereof, said surface having flat areas at the narrow and wide end portions of said wall, the flat area at the narrow end portion of the wall having an aperture opening into the channel of said body, the flat area at the wide end portion of said wall having a projecting coupling pin, a retaining flange spaced from and encircling the major portion of said pin to form between the pin and said flange a ring-like socket and a strand-like locking member secured to the flat surface near the wide end portion of one of said walls and projecting through said aperture to engage the fastener elements.

In a slider for separable fasteners comprising spaced walls partly defining channels, said walls having a wide end and converging into an opposite narrow end, the improved lock element and mounting means therefor which comprises a pin and a retaining rib spaced therefrom, each of which project from one wall of said slider at the wide end thereof, the retaining rib having portions disposed about and in spaced relation to the pin and defining therewith a socket, said portions converging and terminating in spaced walls deflning a gate communicating with said socket; and a loop element comprising a loop' portion, at one end, retained in said socket between said rib and pin, an arm portion extending from said loop and through said gate and adapted to lie flat on the outer surface of said slider wall, and a detent portion, at the other end, adapted to extend through an aperture in said slider wall to engage links of the fastener.
10. In a slider for separable fasteners comprising spaced walls partly deflning channels, said walls having a wide end and converging to a narrow end, the improvement which comprises a pin 7 and a retaining rib spaced therefrom, each of which project from one wall of said slider at the wide end thereof, the retaining rib having portions disposed about and in spaced relation to the pin and defining therewith a socket, said portions converging and terminating in spaced walls de-v fining a gate communicating with said socket; and a lock element comprising a loop portion, at one end, retained in said socket between said rib and pin, a resilient arm portion extending from said loop and through said gate, said arm portion normally lying on and engaging the outer surface of the slider wall, the slider wall having an aperture at the narrow end thereof, said lock element having, at the end thereof opposite the loop portion, a detent extending through said aperture, said slider wall having a transverse recess therein bridged by the arm portion of the lock element and forming with said arm portion a bearing for a pull member, said pull member being slidably and rotatably mounted in said bearing; the surfaces of said recess being cammed in relation to the lock element whereby sliding movement of the pull member in said bearing is adapted to cause movement of the lock element away from and toward the said surface of the slider wall and thereby disengagement and engagement of said detent with the fastener links.
