Description
P 1967 H. MORIN SLIDER FOR SEPARABLE FASTENERS Filed Feb. 4, 1 966 INVENTOR. L 0 0/5 h. Mom/v HTTORNE Y United States Patent 3,343,235 SLIDER FOR SEPARABLE FASTENERS Louis H. Morin, Bronx, N.Y., assignor to Coats & Clark Inc., New York, N.Y., a corporation of Delaware Filed Feb. 4, 1966, Ser. No. 525,043 3 Claims. (Cl. 24--205.15)
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A zipper slider having a longitudinal track on the outside of one wall extending substantially from one end to the other of the slider and means for attaching a pull tab to the slider so the tab may move from one end of the track to the other end.
This invention relates to sliders for separable fastener stringers. More particularly, the invention deals with the provision of an elongated channel on a wall of the slider for support and guidance of a swivel mounting for a pull in movement of the swivel mounting to each end portion of the slider, facilitating proper operation of the slider over the stringers of the separable fastener in coupling and uncoupling said stringers, thus avoiding the cocking or jamming of the slider upon the stringers.
Still more particularly, the invention deals in a structure of the character defined, wherein an elongated washer, defining the channel of the slider, is mounted in a recess or depression of the slider wall and peripheral lip edges of the recess or depression are utilized in retaining the washer against displacement from the slider wall.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of a slider made according to my invention, part of the construction being broken away.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the slider, with parts of the construction broken away and parts shown in section. I
FIG. 3 is a partial section on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2, with part of the background shown being illustrated in section; and
FIG. 4 is'a diagrammatic sectional detail view showing the slider wall as initially cast and indicating, in dot-dash lines, a section of the channel forming washer, with the retaining lip shown in engagement with the washer in dotted lines.
In the drawing, and 11 show conventional top and bottom walls of a channelled slider body, the walls being joined at the wide end thereof in a web 12, note FIG. 3.
With the present slider structure, the top wall 10 is fashioned to form an elongated and more or less elliptical recess or depression 13 bordered by boundary walls 14 which are normally formed or cast, as seen in FIG. 4 of the drawing. Considering FIG. 2 of the drawing, the rounded end portions of the walls 14 are positioned adja cent opposed ends of the wall 10, as seen at 15 and 16, 15 being adjacent the narrow contracted end of the Wall 10; whereas, 16 is adjacent the wider double channel-end of the slider.
At 17, I have shown an elongated channel forming washer, the peripheral edges of which fit snugly in the recess or depression 13 of the wall 10, as clearly noted in FIG. 3. This figure also shows the cross-sectional contour of the washer 17, in other words, the channel 18 on the lower surface thereof, the elongated reduced diameter and more or less elliptical opening 19 at the upper por- Patented Sept. 26, 1967 tion of the washer and the peripheral bevelled corner portions 20 at the top of the washer. Here, it is pointed out that, in making the assemblage, after the washer 17 has been placed in position, as indicated in dot-dash lines in FIG. 4, the upper end of the wall 14 is formed over upon the bevelled surfaces 20 to formthe retaining lips 21, positively retaining the washer 17 against displacement from the wall 10.
Prior to forming the assemblage, as noted above, a swivel member or pin 22 or its enlarged or flanged head 23 is positioned in the channel 18 of the washer 17, the pin 22 projecting freely through the aperture 19 of the washer and the upper end of the pin has, on opposed sides thereof, recesses or apertures 24 for the reception of pivot ends 25 of a suitable pull 26.
Considering FIG. 3 of the drawing, it will appear that the head 23 of the pin 22 fits freely in the channel 18 of the washer, thus permitting free movement of the swivel pin from the position shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 adjacent the rounded end 16 to the opposed end of the slider, in other words, adjacent the end 15, as noted in FIG. 2 of the drawing. The position of the swivel pin 22, shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawing, is the position assumed when the slider is operating on stringers to couple the same; whereas, in uncoupling the stringers, the swivel pin will be positioned at the opposed end of the washer from that shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawing. In addition to providing free swinging movement of the pull 26 on the pin, it will be apparent that the pull can be swung to rotate the swivel in the channel defined by the washer 17.
With the structure defined, it will be apparent that a definite and positive channel structure can be formed on a slider body for free and easy movement of the swivel pin in operation of the slider and, in some instances, the channel washer can be formed of materials contrasting to the material employed in the slider body.
With luggage and other articles of manufacture, quite often, a zipper operating upon a surface is arranged to travel in directions at right angles to each other and these two directions are usually joined by a rounded portion, in which the stringer is arranged. With sliders of the kind herein disclosed, it has been found that the sliders will travel through these rounded stringer portions without any cocking or jamming by reason of the fact that the pull is capable of movement in the channel to bring the swivel member in the proper end of the channel to prevent cocking or jamming; in other words, with the present structure, a freer action of the slider is provided along the stringer, regardless of the contour or arrangement of the stringer on its support.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A slider for separable fastener stringers, said slider comprising a body having spaced walls, elongated channel forming means fixed to the outer surface of one wall of the slider body, said channel forming means comprises a washer seated in a depression in the slider wall and said depression having raised boundary walls, upper edges of which are fashioned to form lips engaging said washer in retaining the same in assembled relationship with said slider wall, a swivel member including a head operating in the channel of said means for movement longitudinally of said wall into positions adjacent opposed ends of the wall, a pull pivoted to said member, and said member being freely rotatable in the channel of said means.
2. A slider as defined in claim 1, wherein peripheral edges of the washer are bevelled to receive said lips.
3. A slider for separable fastener stringers comprising a slider body having spaced walls, means forming an elongated channel exposed to the outer surface of one wall 3 4 of the slider body, said channel forming means comprises References Cited a washer independent of said one wall of the slider body, UNITED STATES PATENTS and interengaging means between the washer and said one wall of the slider body for retaining the washer 1403988 1/1922 Sundback' against displacement from said wall, a swivel member 5 1694915 12/1928 24-20515 X including a head operating in the channel of said means 1962479 6/1934 Carmefor movement longitudinally of said wall of the slider 2788557 4/1957 Garsson 242O5'15 into positions adjacent opposed ends of the wall, means checking movement of said member in both directions FOREIGN PATENTS on said wall, said member being rotatable in said channel 10 756,319 12/1933 Francemeans, and a pull coupled with said member for actuating the member longitudinally of the slider wall.
