This invention relates to sliders for use on separable fastener stringers to couple and uncouple the scoops thereof. More particularly, the invention deals in a slider structure having yieldably supported wall parts or shoe members partially forming the contracted channel end of the slider so as to facilitate lateral yielding of the shoe members in the event of a slider jamming, thus enabling the slider to move on the stringers and the jamming condition to be corrected.
Still more particularly, the invention deals with a slider, the parts of which, aside from a spring or yielding plate employed, are die cast, each including rivet forming portions which can be headed in assembling the respective parts to form the complete slider structure.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a slider made according to my invention;
Fig. 2 is an exploded view showing the respective parts of the slider, preparatory to assemblage thereof to produce the structure shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 with parts shown in an inverted position.
In producing the non-jamming or jam-releasable slider, provide a main slider body, or part, shown at the lower portion of Fig. 2 of the drawing, having a normal side wall portion 11, that is to say, the wall portion 11 includes inturned side flanges 12 of normal or conventional length. The wall 11 has an outwardly extending rib 14 of cross-sectional form shown in Fig. 3 to provide means for attachment of a pull to the slider body.
At the other side of the double channel end 15 of the part 10 is disposed a wall portion 16.joining the wall 11 in a connecting web 17, the wall 16 having short inturned flanges 18 in alinement with the flanges 12 at the wide end portion of the slider body. Wall 16 projects from a straight edge to a slight extent, as indicated at 19.
The wall 16 includes, at its periphery, a raised flange 20 bordering the edges thereof, thus forming a recess 21 on the outer surface of the wall 16 and the wall within the recess 21 has projecting rivet members 22, these members being normally straight and adapted to be riveted over in securing the slider parts together, as later described.
In Fig. 2 of the drawing immediately above the part 10 is shown the slider parts orwalls 23, 24 which form continuations of the wall 16. and might be termed shoes. The parts 23, 24 have inturned flanges 25 and 26 which are adapted to be arranged above the flanges 12. Outer peripheral edges of the parts 23 and 24 each have raised flanges 27, 28 bordering the wall portions 29 and 30 of said parts and forming on outer surfaces of the walls recesses 31 and 32. The walls 29 and 30, within the recesses, have raised rivet members 33 and 34 which are ice riveted over, like the members 22, as later described. At 35 I have shown, immediately above the parts 23 and 24 in Fig. 2 of the drawing, a spring member of the slider, the member being in the form of a plate having substantially the same contour-line as the slider, as seen in Fig. 1, and having a three-cornered end portion 36 having three apertures 37 in the corner portions thereof adapted to receive the rivets 22. The plate includes extending spring arms 38 and 39 partially formed by the longitudinal slot 40 terminating at its inner end in the large aperture 41. The arms 38 and 39 are apertured, as seen at 42 and 43', to receive the rivets 33, 34 respectively. The thickness of the member 35 is substantially equal to the depth of the recesses 21, 31 and 32, so that, when the parts are assembled, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the outer surface of the part 35 will be flush with the outer surface of the flanges 2t), 27 and 28.
In assembling the parts, it will be apparent that the plate 35 will be mounted upon the rivets 22 and the rivets 33 and 34 with suitable tools arranged in the slider channels and pressure will be applied to head the rivets in the manner seen, for example, at 33 and 34 in Fig. 3 of the drawing, thus securing the plate in position on the part 10 and supporting the parts 23 and 24 on the arms 38 and 39. The spring arms 38 and 39 will provide lateral yielding movement of the shoes 23 and 24, thus preventing any jamming action of the slider in its operation along the stringers. The spring tension will be sufficient to normally maintain the shoes in proper alinement with the contracted end portion of the slider part 10, but will allow the shoes to move laterally when subjected to any stress or strain in What is generally referred to as jamming. Each of the parts 10, 23 and 24 are formed as die cast products with the rivet members 22, 33 and 34 formed integrally with the part. In this way, the several parts of the resulting slider can be economically produced thus minimizing the cost of the resulting product. It will be apparent from a consideration of Fig. l of the drawing that the contour of the part 35, including the spring arms 38 and 39, fits snugly within the recesses 21, 31 and 32, thus producing a neat and finished appearance of the resulting slider. It will also be apparent that a clearance is provided between the inner ends of the shoes 23, 24 and the Wall 16 of the part ill, as noted at 43, 44 in Fig. 1 of the drawing. This clearance provides for the free action of the shoes, as will be apparent.
The spring arms 38 and 39 also permit the vertical movement of the shoes 23 and 24 with respect to the scoops of a separable fastener or the wall portion 11 in the event of jamming action which would require flexure in the vertical as Well as in the lateral direction.
A wedging action under either of the walls or shoes 23, 24 due to a jam will separate the shoe from thelong wall 11 against the action of the flat spring 35 which will flex approximately along a line joining the center of aperture 41 (Fig. 2) and the center of the aperture 37' nearest to the shoe which is displaced. A jam near the lower end of either shoe 23, 24 will tend to lift said shoe in relation to the long wall 11 so that the lower edge of the shoe (Fig. 1) will pivot approximately around the aforesaid line joining the apertures 41 and 37-thus permitting the lower portion of the shoe to separate from the long wall 11 somewhat further than the upper portion of the shoe. Because shoes 23, 24 are separatelymounted on spring extensions or arms 38, 39 they may be moved independently of each other so that one may move while the other is stationary, or one may move more than the other.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A slider for separable fastener stringers comprising a main slider body having a wide end and a narrow end,
said body comprising a flanged long wall joined to a short Wall at the wide end of the slider, said short wall having a recessed outer surface, a plurality of rivet members extending outwardly with respect to the .short wall and disposed within said recess, two wall-parts forming continuations of said short wall, said parts and the short wall being flanged to help define channels in the slider, outer surfaces of the wall parts being recessed vand having projecting integral rivet members, a spring plate arranged in the recessed portions of :the short wall and wall parts, the plate being apertured to receive said rivet members for securing the plate to said parts and short wall, said spring plate being divided to form spring arms .on Which said parts are mounted, and said spring arms enabling said parts to move with respect to said mainslider body.
2. A non-jamming slider for separate fastener stringers comprising a slider body having alongfront wall and a short back wall spaced with respect to the long wall by ,a
connecting web, a fiat spring member fixed to the short wall and having spaced apart spring arms projecting beyond the short wall and arranged over said long wall, a pair of independent separate shoes fixed to the spring arms forming extensions of the short Wall arranged over said long wall, adjacent edges of the shoes and short wall being spaced one from the other, each of said shoes at said contracted end portion of the slider body adapted to move away from the long Wall a .distance greater than at the opposite end portion of said shoe and the lateral edge portion of either shoe adapted to move from the long wall a distance greater than the corresponding lateral edge portion of the other shoe, said shoes in com bination with the long wall forming the contracted channel end of the slider, and said flat spring member completely overlying said short wall and shoes except fora narrow margin around the peripheral edges thereof.
3. A non-jamming slider for separate fastener stringers comprising a slider body having a long front wall and a short back wall spaced with respect to the long wall by a connecting web, a flat spring member fixed to the short wall and having spaced apart spring arms projecting beyond the short wall and arranged over said long wall, a pair of independent separate shoes fixed to the spring arms forming extensions of the short Wall arranged over said long wall, adjacent edges of the shoes and short wall being spaced one from the other, said shoes in combination with the long wall forming the contracted channel end of the slider, said shoes being adapted to move about an axis angularly disposed to both the longitudinal and transverse axes of said slider, and a pull attaching means on said long front wall.
4. A non-jamming slider for separate fastener stringers comprising a slider body having a long front wall and a short back wall spaced with respect to the long wall by a connecting web, a fiat spring member fixed to the short walland having spaced apart spring arms projecting beyond the short wall and arranged over said long wall, a pair of independent separate shoes fixed to the spring arms forming extensions of the short wall arranged over said long wall, adjacent edges of the shoes and short wall being spaced one from the other, said shoes in combination with the long wall forming a contracted channel end of the slider, said short wall, fiat spring member and shoes forming a relatively smooth and substantially fiat back wall for said slider, and a pull attaching means on said long front wall.
5. A non-jamming slider for separate "fastener stringers comprising a slider body having a long front wall and a short :back wall spaced withrespect to the long wall bye iii) 4 connecting web, a flat spring member fixed to the short wall and having spaced apart spring arms projecting beyond the short wall and arranged over said long wall, a pair of independent separate shoes fixed to the spring arms forming extensions of the short wall arranged over said long wall, adjacent edges of the shoes and short wall being spaced one from the,other,said shoes in combination with the long wall forming the contracted channel end of the slider, said .:S.h, Tt wall, =flat spring member and shoes forming a relatively smooth and substantially fiat back wall for said slider, said shoes'being adapted to move about an axis angularly ,disposed to both the longitudinal and transverse axes of said slider, and a pull attaching means on said long frontwall.
6. A non-jamming slider for separate fastener stringers comprising a slider body having a long front wall and a short back wall spaced with respect to the long wall by a connecting :web, ,a gflat spring .member fixed to the short wall ;and;ha.ving spaced :apart spring arms projecting beyond the short walland arranged over said long wall, a pair :of independent separate-shoes fixed-to the spring arms forming extensionsofthe short \wall arranged over said long wall, adjacent edgesof the shoes and short wall being spaced {One from the other, .each of said shoes at said contracted end portion of the slider body adapted to move away from the long wall a distance greater than at the opposite end portion of said shoe .and the lateral edge portionof either shoe'adaptedto move from the long Wall a distance greater than the corresponding lateral edge portion of the other shoe, said shoes in combination-with the long wall forming the contracted channel end of the slider, said-short twall, fiat spring member and shoes forming a relatively smooth and substantially fiat back wall for said slider, and ;a pull ,attaching means on said long wall.

Anon-jamming slider for separate fastener stringers comprising a slider body having a long front wall and a short back wall spaced withres pect'to the long wall by a connecting web, a flat spring member fixed to the short wall and having spaced apart spring arms projecting beyond the short wall and arranged over said long wall, a pair of independent separate shoes fixed to the spring arms forming extensions of the short wall and arranged over said long wall, adjacent edges oftheshoes and short wall beingspacedonefrom the other, said shoes in combination with the 'long wall forming a contracted channel end of the slider, said short wall, fiat spring member and shoes forming a relatively smooth and substantially flat back wall for :said slider, said shoes being adapted to move about an axis angularly disposed to both the longitudinal and transverse .axes of said slider, said fiat spring member completely overlying said short wall and shoes except -'for a narrow margin around the peripheral edges thereof, and a pull attaching means on said long front wall.
