H. J. KRAMER.
GOMBINED BLOUSE AND UNDERWAIST.
- 1 No. 548,833. Patented 001;. 29, 1395.
v g I Jae/Q2050 wz'yzffrwrg UNITED STATES ATENT Fries.
I-IARRIYYJ. KRAMER, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED BLOUSE AND UNDERWAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,833, dated October 29, 1895.
Application filed June 11, 1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY J. KRAMER, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, haveinvented an ImprovementinaOombined Blouse and Underwaist, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
In the use of blousewaists, particularly when worn by children, some device is necessary for sustaining the skirt or trousers in and also from the fact that frequent washing rots or decays the band, so that itwill lose its elasticity. If the skirt" or trousers are attached to the blouse itself, the latter is soon pulled down closely over the body and its looseness and freedom of movement materially diminished.
In my efiorts to overcome the various objections hereinbefore 'set forth I have invented a combined blouse and underwaist,
the latter. being connected to the former at suitable points, so as not to interfere at all with theloose and easy fit of the blouse, but yet to afford a firm and comfortable support for the skirt or trousers when attached thereto.
In accordance therewith my invention consists in a combined blouse and underwaist, the blouse proper being of greater fullness and length than the underwaist, and the underwaist arranged within it and secured to its. neck and shoulders at its upper edge, so as to leave the fullness of the blouse unfettered, a garment-supporting band being connected to the underwaist, and the blouse having its lower portion folded inwardly upon itself and permanently secured to the band, substantially as will be described.
Figure 1 is a front view of a combined blouse and underwaist embodying my invention and Serial No. 552,422. (No inodel.)
' the requisite looseness and fullness to th e body portion, and it is then turned down at 01. and
secured by a line of stitching s to the waist band or belt 19, the lower edge of the latter and the edge of the material of the blouse being stitched together at s. In turning down the edge of the blouse at a it may be extended to form a portion a or this portion a may be an attached piece.
The underwaist is composed of a backpiece c, stitched to the shoulders ofthe blouse at s and to the neckband at 5 while its lower edge is preferably extended between the belt b and downward or attached portion a of the blouse and secured in place by the stitching s at the back.
Front pieces are stitched at their upper ends to the neckband and shoulder-seams of the blouse and at their lower edges to the front portion of the belt b, between it and the adjacent part a of the blouse, by the Stitching s", so that the underwaist acts not only as a lining, but as a support for the waistbelt b from the shoulders of the wearer. The front pieces of the underwaist are so arranged within the blouse to form an opening to correspond with the front opening of the blouse.
Buttons or other suitable attaching devices d are secured to the waist-belt and adjacent portion of the blouse back and front to sustain the skirt or trousers, as may be.
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be evident that the waist-belt can never slip down below the fullness of the blouse, nor can the weight of the attached clothing pull or drag the blouse out of shape. The underwaist not only acts as a lining for the blouse, but takes the place of a separate underwaist, and being only attached to the shoulder-seams, neckband, and Waist-belt of the blouse is cool and comfortable, supporting the clothing from the shoulders.
b in line with the front opening of the blouse ICO The waist-belt is separated in front at and closed by a button 19 to enter a buttonhole in the adjacent end of the belt.
My invention is not restricted to any particular shape or style of blouse, nor to the eX- act construction herein shown and described for attachment to the waist-belt, so long as the latter is supported by an underwaist permanently attached thereto, the lower edge of the blouse being also attached at or near the top of the belt, whereby its fullness normally falls over and conceals the belt.
I claim A combined blouse and underwaist, comprising a blouse proper, and an underwaist arranged within said blouse and permanently secured thereto at its upper edge to the neck HARRY J. KRAMER. Witnesses:
JOHN G. EDWARDS, AUGUSTA E. DEAN.
