To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BEATRICE SYBIL BANKART, a subject of Great Britain, and a resident of Exeter, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.

This invention has reference to improvements in womens skirts or garments and particularly to such garments adapted for sporting or outing purposes.

The object of this invention is to so construct a garment of the nature herein described that it may be utilized either as a skirt or as a cloak.

Another object of the invention is to so construct a garment adapted to be used as a skirt or as a cloak that said garment is furnished with a member adapted to be utilized as a collar for the cloak, and other members forming lapels.

Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the garment as will hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 represents a front view of the improved garment utilized as a skirt. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of the garment utilized as a cloak. Fig. 3 represents a back view of the garment to show the back portion of the yoke and the shaping seams, both of the yoke and of the bodice or collar.

Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.

Garments of the nature herein described are adapted for use, by women, particularly in tramping, hunting and in outdoor recreation. For such purposes and under conditions which arise or which may arise, it is desirable to provide a garment which may be utilized for various purposes.

In carrying this invention into practice I form, by cutting fabric of suitable nature, two yoke pieces 5 and 6 which together form the front of the yoke and extend from the Waist line to the foot of the skirt, the meeting edges of said pieces being furnished respectively with buttons 7, 7 and the buttonholes 8, 8 by which these yoke pieces 5 and 6 are secured together from a point somewhat below the waist line to the foot of the skirt while, between the topmost button, and button-hole, and waist line, the fabric of said yoke 5 and 6 extends to form the lapels 9 and 10. The back yoke piece 11 is shaped, as to its general outline, similarly to the combined yoke pieces 5 and 6 and is secured to said pieces at seams 12 and 13 which are so shaped as to conform these portions of the yoke pieces to fit smoothly over the hips of the wearer, when the garment is used as a skirt.

Sewed to the waist line of the yoke pieces 5, 6 and 11 is the bodice formed by the pieces of fabric 14, 14 having button- holes 15, 15 and the back seam 16 by which said latter pieces are shaped to fit about the waist of the wearer when the garment is used as a skirt and permits of the turning down of said bodice, as a collar, when the garment is used as a cloak. The strap 17 is provided which is adapted to be secured, by means of its buttons 18, 18, engaged with the buttonholes 15, 15 of the bodice pieces 14, 14 to hold the free ends of said bodice pieces whereby the upper edge of the bodice may be held in place around the person of the wearer. The yoke pieces 5, 6 and 11 are preferably cut straightway of the goods or approximately with the length of the warp and to the outer edges of said yoke pieces I secure, by sewing the sides 19, 19 preferably cut circularly, so called, or in such manner that the lower edges thereof, forming the foo-t of the skirt, are considerably fuller than those portions secured to the hip portions of the yoke pieces 5, 6 and 11.

The costume for which the improved garment is particularly adapted includes knickerbockers, so called, whereby the limbs of the wearer are protected when the improved outer garment is removed.

Figure 1 of the drawings, illustrates the use of the garment as a skirt as when the wearer is starting out for a tramping expedition. On arrival at the rougher part of the way or at any desired time the garment is removed by releasing the buttons of the yoke piece 6, from their button-holes, and detaching strap 17, after which the garment may be carried in any desired or convenient manner.

The use of the garment as a cloak for the upper part of the body is illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing and the garment may be thus used with the parts 14, 14 turned down ward, as shown in said figure, or said parts 14, 14 may be turned upward, as shown in Fig. 3, in the nature of a collar to afford protection for the throat and face. When thus used as a cloak the lapels 9 and 10 with the short collar formed by the parts 14, 14: are similar to the like parts of a cloak while the full sides 19, 19, taken up somewhat by the extension of the wearers arms, have somewhat the appearance of sleeves.

The upper portions of the yoke pieces 5, 6 and 11 being adapted to approximately fit "either the hips or the shoulders of the wearer sustain the sides 19, 19 from undue stretching or dragging.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.

A garment of the nature described comprising a yoke adapted to fit over the hips or the shoulders of the wearer and having comparatively narrow depending back and front members extending to the foot of the garment, said front member having an open ing at its upper portion and'being furnished with lapels located at the sides of said opening, whereby said opening may be closed, and a bodice, shorter than the waist line of said yoke, secured to the waist line of the yoke, said bodice being flexible and comparatively narrow whereby it may be utilized as a storm collar or may be turned down against the yoke.
