NECKTlE-FASTENER.

- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,330, dated November 6, 1888.

To all'whom'it may concern;

Be it known that I, MANES HAMBURGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wash ington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Necktie-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to necktie-fasteners, and has for its object the provision of means for adjusting the band of a necktie rearwardly to a collar-button, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference point out similar parts on each figure, Figure l represents a locking-plate constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a like view showing the preferred form of notched open stems,the

plate having pointed prongs for detachable connection to the lining of the band of a necktie. Fig. 3 represents a band-cravat having attached thereto a locking-plate embodying my invention. 'Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of the band of a necktie, a collar, and adjacent portion of a shirt, parts being broken away to show collar-button and mode of connecting the several parts.

In the'drawings, A is a necktie-band that encircles the neck. I do not limit the application of my invention to a plain band, as it is equally adaptable to all styles of cravats having bows or depending tabs in front.

B is a strip or p1ate,ma de preferably of thin ductile metal. It is provided with a horizontal slot having intermediate of its length, but away from its center, an orifice, b, large enough to freely pass over the disk 0 of a collar-button, G. The orifice b divides the horizontal slot into two openings, which I herein denominate open stems, b b, of unequal length, the purpose being that when the device is being worn said orifice shall always lie away from the central point of the back of the collar-band of the shirt, whereby there will be no risk of detachment of a tie provided with my invention by the button disk falling through the orifice. It will be readily understood that-it can only pass through when the the disk and orifice are brought into coincidence for the purpose of attachment and detachment. the horizontal open stems b I), extending diametrically therefrom on either side, constitutes a double-stemmed key-hole slot. Said open stems do not extend the full length of the plate, and their respective outer terminals, b form stops for limiting lateral progression of the button-post,and which can in no instance, whatever may be the position of the necktie, pass beyond the limiting-points b".

In analogous devices, where it has been attempted to clasp the post of the button between the edges of spring-controlled openings made by bent wire, there has been no provision for stopping the progression of said post beyond the series of clasping-openings, and the result is that if said post traverses in either direction beyond the limits of said openings the connection is lost and the tie will be come disengaged.

The drawings show open stems 1/ extending lengthwise from the orifice I) much longer than is necessary. The open stems b have preferably on one edge a series of notches, forming openings, into one of which the buttonpost will fallas the tie and its attached plate is moved around the neck. The opposite edge of the stem,being in a right line,will press the post into and within the respective notch and securely lock it therein.

It is not, however, necessary that the plates be permanently connected to the band. They may be so constructed as to be detachable and beremovablefromonecravattoanother. Plates adapted for this purpose are shown in the drawings provided with sharp-pointed prongs or pins extending either at right angles from the length or horizontally from either end.

I do not confine myself to any special direction of said prongs, various appropriate forms being illustrated in details to the several figures. It is obvious that said prongs can be inserted within the lining or inner fold of the neckband, and this form will be very serviceable in wash eravats.

From the foregoing description, in connec tion with the drawings, the nature and object and the operation of my invention will be readily understood by all familiar with such articles of wearing apparel. Its operation may be thus stated. A band supplied with a 1oeking-plate constructed as set forth is placed around the wearers neck. The orifice bis passed over the collar-button. Then as the band is tied or tightened forwardly the plate will be drawn around the neck. The post 0 of the button 0 will enter the slots 1) and be grasped between the edges of said open stem. It will be seen that the slot I) on either side of the orifice 1) forms a way for the button-post in whichever direction the band may be drawn.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A necktie-fastener consisting of an elongated plate, 13, having lengthwise thereof an elongated slot divided away from its median point by an 0rifice,b,u-'hereby open stems 1/1), of unequal length, are extended diametrically from said orifice, said plates having suitable means for detachable connection to a necktie, as and for the purpose intended, substantially as described.

2. A necktie-fastener consisting of a detachable plate, 13, provided with a double-stemmed key-hole slot, 71, the open stems b I) being of unequal length, and each having one edge notched and the opposite edge straight, sub- 30 stantially as described.

3. The detachable plate adapted to be fastened upon the inner side of the band of a necktie,provided with a d0ub1e-stemmed key-hole slot extending lengthwise of said plate adapted 3 5 to receive a collar-button when attached to the neckband of a shirt, substantially as described.
