Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
ALONZO H. SAVAGE, OF ASHTABULA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT -|N BUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,067, dated September 3, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, invented by ALoNZo 'H. SAVAGE, of Ashtabula, in the county of view of the same, showing a slight modification. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the inner side of the button shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for fastening buttons to garments in such a way that they will not pull or tear out, and which will enable the buttons to be applied without thread, needles, or machine and it consists in the combination, with the button-plate or head, of a spiral wire or spring, forming the shank and inner plate of the button, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the button-plate, to the central part of which is attached a wire, B. The wire B is coiled to form a shank for the button, and is then further coiled to form a plate to rest against the inner side of the garment. The wire B is grooved upon one or both sides, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that when the coil is passed through the garment and drawn closely the said groove will prevent the coiled wire from getting out of place and insure having a smooth surface to bear against the garment. The inner, end of the coiled wire B is bent so as to cross the coil, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and a loop or hook, O, is secured in the button-plate and arranged to hold the end of the wire securely.
To attach the button to a garment a small hole is first punctured therein, and the point of the spiral spring (when the coil is open) is inserted; then, by turning the button in the manner of a screw, the spiral will readily pass through the cloth when it is to be pressed down with the thumb and finger onto and around the shank of the button, so as to cause it to form a smooth fiat surface on the inside of garments. The bent arm is then to be passed under the loop or catch in the center of the coil, as shown.
It will be observed that in Fig. 1 I have shown the spiral spring secured to the diskA by riveting; but when the loop or hook G is used the upper end of the coil is held loosely in the recess formed on the under side of the disk, as shown in Fig. 2. When constructed as shown in the latter case a portion of the wire may be first shaped to form the shank of the coil, and then put from the under side through the hole cut in the garment, and the disk attached by means of the loop 0, as above described. It will be understood that in such case said loop is rigidly connected with the button, and is made of such size as to admit of its being readily passed through the spiral coil.
This mode of fastening prevents the button from being pulled or torn off from clothing, as is the case when buttons are fastened by thread. It also has the advantage of enabling the button to be applied without the use of machinery, as when buttons are riveted onto clothing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a button-plate, A, of a wire, B, grooved upon one or both sides and coiled to form a shank, and an inner plate for securing the button to the garment, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the hook or' loop 0 with the button-plateA and with the grooved wire B, coiled to form a shank and an inner plate, and having its free end bent across the said coiled plate, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
