, ATTACHMENT FOR GARtMENT-SUPPORTERS.
To aZZwwm t may concern.'
.Be it known that I. BENJAMIN F. ORE- wILER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook .and fState of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attach- Y ments for Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention yrelateslto an attachment in the form of a connecting piece adapted and intended to be used in conjunction with garment supporters, as n for yinstance the ordinary garter.
Thev object of the invention is to configure a single piece of metalin a manner. whereby it will serve to; first, provide a connecting piece between the suspendingstrap and the garment clasp; second, to act as aretainer for the upper end of the non-extensible fabric'or tape ofthe garment clasp; third,to retain the free ends of the loop of the ygarment clasp; and fourth, to reinforce and strengthen suoli looped portion against an undue separating or springingaction.
A further object of the invention is to make the attachment of a simple design whereby it is easily 'and' cheaply manufactured, and can be readily and quickly applied to the parts of the Vgarter with which it is associated. v .t
.The invention further consists in the features of construction andv combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 isa Afront view of a garter with the device or attachmentof the present invention in operative position; Fig. 2 is an edge view showing the attachment of the present invention together with the lower part of the suspending strap `in section and the garter clasp in elevation; Fig. I3 is a detail showing a section through the attachment of the present invention and showing the upper part of the loop member and tape Lof the garment clasp held in .position; F ig. 4 is a front view of the attachment ofthe present invention; and Fig. 5 is a lsection on line 5 5 of Fig. 4 looking in the direction of the arrow and showing the tape .of the garment clasp in clamped or secured-position. i

y In connection with the use of garment supporters a link or., connecting member is employed for joining the garment clasp to the elasticv suspendingstrap, and in korder to cover the metal upon the back of the clasp La jstrip of fabric, usually non-elastic tape, isemployed, and, of course, vmeans must .be :provided for securing and holding this .tape in place. -The clasp employsfa looped zmember, whichA vis contracted atv yits lower lend and .enlarged medially thereof. The lower contracted. end embraces the :stud
andserves .toholdthe fabric in wrapped conditionabout they stud.y Means must be provided for reinforcing or strengthening this looped member so that it will not possess .too great ,anamount of spring property,
otherwise itfwould spring apart to such an eXtent Lin use, as to'teliminate yits value as a means l'for holdingthe fabric yin' wrapped condition about thestud, and so far as I am aware, there/has never been produced an attachment formedy of a single piece of ymetal which will serve as a :means of connecting vthe garment clasp and suspending strap,
lof the =ordinary nature, to which is attached a buckle 7 for adjusting the length thereof. Thebuckle, however, forms no part of the .presentinventiom and, of course, can be of any vsuitable style. The clamping portion of the `gar-ment supporter consists of a stud base S'f-rom which rises a stud 9, both the ybase andstud being of any suitable construction. Agtape `or fabric 10gis attached to said stud base in any suitable manner, and this tape, as will be seen from the drawings, eX- tends along `the back of the clamping portion orv clasp, andr serves -to prevent any vmetal .of the clasp from coming Ain contact rwith the wearer.
The .other `part o`f the clamping portion consists of a looped memnumeral 14. This member is provided at its j.
upper end with a slot and the upper part of the member consists of a bar 16, which, when the member is attached to the suspendving strap 6, lies within the loop portion of said strap, as will be seen from Fig. 2, so that by provision of this slot and bar the member 14 serves as a means for joining or connecting the suspending strap and the garment clasp. The lower end of the member 14 is in the form of a depending neck 17, of a reduced width from the width of the remainder of the body, and this neck is bent back upon itself to kform a U-shaped piece 18. The portion 19 of the U-shaped piece which liesto the rear, terminates ina toothed edgeangularly extending flange 20, the toothed edge of which alines with a slot 21.in the body of the member. The slot 21 ylies below the slot 15 and for convenience may be termed the lower slot.y
v The tape 10 isY folded over the toothed edge of the flange 20, as will be seen from Figs. 2 and` 3, andthen by a swedging action the flange is forced forward crowding the tape intothe slot 21, as will be apparent from Fig. 5, thus securing this end of the tape inposition. The teeth of the flange 20 are not intended to besharp, since it is not desired to have a penetration or puncturing of the tape, but rather a forcing or ycrowding of the tape through the slot. The bottom wall of the U-shaped member 18 is cut away, as at 22. The free ends of the loop member 11 are insertedl into the U-shaped member 18, and the extremities 23 of the ends of the member 11 are bent slightly downward so that they project through the opening 22, as will be seen from Fig. 1, and when the ends are thus configured the loop member is heldl by the U-shaped portion against undue outward springing movement, and thus the loop member 11 isreinforced or strengthened against an undue springing action when in use, and this bendingof the ends of the loop members so that they project through a slot is deemed to be a novel configuration of the end portions of the loop member.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the member 14 serves asa means for joining the elastic suspending strap to the' garment clasp; serves asa means for retaining one end of the garment clasp tape in position; servesto retain the free ends of the wire loop of the garment clasp in position; and serves to reinforce and strengthen said wire loop against an undue outward springing action. It will also be apparent that the device is veryv cheap and simple of construction, and that the application of it to the other parts of a garter or garment supporter is very simple.
