GE ORGIE HUBERI RIVES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DEVICE FOR FACILITATING THE DEALING OF CARDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1909.
Application filed September 22, 1908. Serial No. 454,133.
To all wlz omxit may concern:
lie it known that I, GEORGE H, Rives, a c tizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented. a new anduseful Device for Facilitating the Dealing of Cards, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention consists of a device or implement for facilitating the dealing of cards,
turning and moving leaves, sheets, 'etc.,
I counting bank notes, etc, the same embodying a frictional or engaging surface, and a holder for the same applicable to a thumb or finger, said surface being removable from said holder, and the latter being'provided with members for securely retaining the sur- :.-face in position thereon, said surface being adapted to be brought into contact with the cards, leaves, sheets, notes, etc., and take sufficient hold thereon to move the same for the respective purpose thereof, while the surfacemay be removed, replaced,'or substituted by another of different nature.
For the purpose of explaining the invent1o'n,-the accompanying drawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction-of the same to prac tice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limitedto the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
side elevation thereof.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a device embodying myrinventiom Fig. 2 represents another perspective view of thc'same inoperative position. Fig. 3 represents a Fig. 4. represents a side elevation of .a portion. of the device, a certain member being in different position from that shown in Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 represent face views of other forms of frictional surfaces that may be employed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spon'ding. parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings:A designates a band ofelastic or pliable metal or other ma 'terial, which is bent so as to embrace a thumb or finger of the operator of the device T after the manner of a' ring, the ends B, B, of
which are separated so thatthe ring may be readily adjusted in position and be adapted for thumbs or fingers of different thicknesses The exterior of the body of the ring has i .thereon the facing piece (3 of soft rubber or other suitable material, the same following f the contour of the exterior of said'body and so in a manner harmonizing with the contour of the inner face of the thumb-or finger, said piece being removably held in position by the clamps D, which are mounted on the ears E, the latter extending integrally from the body of'the ring near the ends thereof, said clamps being each composed of an elbowshaped member with the axes or journals F at the angle thereof, one limb Gof said memher being adapted to engage the adjacent end of the piece C and force it tightly against the body of the ring,.thus controlling said piece in position, the other limb H serving to operate the limb G, whereby the clamp may be turned on its axes so as to forcethe limb G. into engagement with the facing piece C to hold it firmly on the body of the ring, the clamp thus retaining its position somewhat after the manner of an eccentric, 'as most plainly shown in Figr3. When, however,
the limbs H are forcibly thrown upwar the holding power of the limbs G on the piece C is released, and said limbs clear'saidpiece, as shown in' Fig. 4-, when the piece may be removed for anypurpose requiring the salne.
It will be seen that when the device is applied to a thumb or other finger, it" retains its position thereon, after the man-nerof a ring, the facing piece. 0 presenting itself on the distribution of thesh'eets, of papers, the
counting of the bank notes, etc
In Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, I show the exterior surface of the piece C as corrugated. In Fig. '5, the same is roughened, and in Fig. 6, said surface is provided with small points, such as pins or needles, but to these features, I do not limit myself, as any form of construction adapted to frictionally engage with a card, leaf, sheet, note,.etc. and move the same laterally from its fellows when the hand is properly manipulated, is within the scope of my invention, neither do I limit myself to material, as soft rubber, celluloid, nretal and thelike may be employed for my purpose,
producing substantially the same results,- it
eing noticed alsothat the ring occupies but a small portion of the thumb or finger, leaving the tip of the latter free to engage the i card, leaf, etc, and so assist the iece (J in its operation of dealing of car s, counting money, etc, while the sense of touch of the thumb or finger is preserved as essential, especially in handling and counting bank notes for detecting counterfeits thereof, and
device is in position.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters l the ends of and removably holding said piece thereon. I
=1. A device for the purpose stated composed of a ring-like band applicable to a a pen or pencil can be held and used while the i thumb or finger,'a frictional facing piece on the exterior of said band following the contour thereof and extending for a major portion thereof, and clamps carried by the band thumb or finger, a frictional facing piece on i Patent, is
1. A device for the purpose stat-ed composed of a ring-like band, applicable to a;
and inovably mounted and having members ada ted to engage said piece and hold it firm y on said band. 50
5. A device for the purpose stated comthe exterior of said band and following the contour thereof, and means carried by said band adapted to engage opposite ends of said piece for firmly holding the same thereon.
2 A device for the purpose stated composed of a ring-like band applicable to a thumb or finger, a frictional facing piece on the exterior of said band and confined within thewidth thereof, said facing piece being disposed in parallel relation with and following the contour of the band for a major portion thereof, and means on said band engaging opposite ends of and removably holding said piece thereon.
3. A device for the purpose stated composed of a ring-like band a plicable to. a thumb or finger, a frictional acing piece on Y the exterior of said band and confined Within posed of a ring-like band applicable to a thumb or finger, a frictional acing piece on the exterior of said band, rotatably movable clamps having members adapted to engage said piece, and means on said band adapted to form the bearings of said clamps.
6. A device for the purpose stated composed of a ring-like band a plicable to a thumb or finger, a frictional acin piece on 60 the exterior of said band, rotatab le clamps adapted to engage said piece and tighten it on said band, hearings on said band for said clamps, and members 011 said clamps adapted to operate the latter in opposite directions.
