Patented Sept. 20, 1938 UNITED STATES MEMORANDUM-PAD HOLDER FOR TELE- PHONES Roy A. Faye, Watertown, Mass, assignor to Mays Manufacturing Company, Inc., a. corporation of Rhode Island Application July 6, 1936, Serial No. 88,993
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in memorandum-pad attachments for telephones and the objectof the invention is to provide a simple and efiicient device which will be readily secured to the base of a telephone to support a memorandum-pad and also preferably a pencil in such position that it is readily accessible when the pad is to be used.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the character described which will not add substantial weight to the transmitter of the usual form of telephone in which the transmitter is raised to permit conversation.
A further object of the invention is to provide 5 a memorandum-pad of the character above described which can be attached to the usual form oftelephone or to the so-called French type of telephone stand.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the character above described which will not tilt the telephone stand when the pad is being used.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for detachably clamping a pad of paper to the support and which is so constructed as to present a flat upper surface adapted to receive an advertisement or the like.
These and other objects and features of the invention will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawing and will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a memorandumpad attachment for telephones embodying the invention, showing the manner in which the same is attached to a telephone stand of the French p Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the memorandum-pad attachment illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation, viewed from the left toward the right, of the construction illustrated in Fig. 2; and,
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on lines 4-4 Fig. 3 viewed from the left toward the right.
The memorandum-pad attachment for telephones as illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises a flat plate, preferably a stiff sheet of thin metal, having a base section I, preferably of substantially cylindrical form, a pad-holding section 2, preferably of rectangular form, and an intermediate offset section 3 which integrally connects the base section to the pad-holding section in such manner as to support the pad-holding section in suitably inclined relation to the plane of the base. The aforesaid base section, pad-holding section, and intermediate section may conveniently be made of an integral sheet of stiff metal stamped out by suitable dies and 5 consequently is of relatively inexpensive construction.
The lower end of the pad-holding section desirably is provided with means for holding a pencil below the lower end of the pad. As illus- 10 trated, the lower end of the pad holder is slotted to provide a central tab and the portions of the lower end at each side of the tab are provided with downwardly extending semi-cylindrical ribs 4 while the central tab 43: is bent to form a corn- 1.) plementary semi-cylindrical clamping member which in cooperation with the groove of the ribs will hold the pencil. The lower portion of the periphery of the rib 4 desirably lies in a plane tangential to the lower face of the base or to the 20 lower face of an anti-friction device or devices 5 which are glued or otherwise secured to the under face of the base. Any form of anti-friction device may be employed, but preferably a plurality of thin rubber disks having serrated or corru- 25 gated lower faces are secured in recesses formed by pressing upwardly suitable areas 5m of the base at proper intervals and serve to prevent slippage of the attachment upon a smooth surface. The base is provided with a plurality, 30 preferably four upwardly projecting integral flanges or ears 6 which are curved inwardly and adapted to be bent over the base I of the telephone stand 8 or over the base of a usual type of telephone transmitter which is raised by the 35 hand to the mouth during telephone conversation.
In usual telephones the pad is secured to the base of the telephone by two or more screws and in order that the present attachment may be se- 40 cured to the base of the telephone by set screws the base is provided with suitably positioned holes 9 through which the screws may be passed, in which case the ears 6 may be omitted.
Any suitable means may be provided for secur- 45 ing a memorandum-pad 10 upon the pad-holding section 2. In the preferred construction illustrated a resilient clamp is employed which is in the form of a flat strap II of resilient material adapted to extend across the upper end of the 5 pad with downwardly bent portions l2 and I3 engaging the edges of the pad-holding section 2, and also the edges of the pad if a pad of proper width is employed, with end sections 14 and 15 extending inwardly toward each other and up- 55 wardly to engage the lower face of the pad-holding section 2. This form of clamp can be readily slipped over the upper end of the pad holder and pad after the pad has been placed on the holder and by reasonv of itswidth will secure the pad against lateral displacement as well as retain it in proper position upon the holder. The pad should be of such length as to expose the groove in the rib 4 so that the pencil lying in the groove can be readily picked up.
Desirably the pad holder is provided substantially midway of its length with a hole I 6 adapted to be engaged in a suitable supporting'member when the pad and base are to be dipped in lacquer, or other coating medium such as electroplating bath. The hole I6 may also ,be used as an anchorage for a chain leading to the pencil in order that the latter may not be removed and lost.
It will be understood that the particular embodiment of the invention shown in the accomanying drawing is of an illustrative character and is not restrictive, and that various changes in form, construction and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of the following claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
A memorandum-pad attachment for telephones comprising a single piece of flat metal plate having a curved base section provided with a plurality of upwardly extending inwardly curved ears to engage over the edge of the base of the telephone, a flat pad-holding section and an intermediate relatively narrow upwardly ofiset section vof substantial length connecting said base section to substantially the middle of said pad-holding section without seam or joint, said ofi'set section being provided with one side longer than the other for supporting said pad-holding section in suitably inclined relation to said base with a portion of the lower end of said pad-holding section lying substantially in the plane of the lower face of said base to prevent tilting of the attachment when the pad is used.
