Ap 2, 1957 A. w. LARSON MEMO PAD AND PENCIL HOLDER Filed Feb. 9 1956 .fllp/zeus MLars on INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Unit States Pat em;
MEMO PAD AND PENCIL HOLDER Alpheus W. Larson, Chilton, Wis.
Application February 9, H56, Serial No. 564,461
3 Claims. (63L 45--.5)
This invention relates to a memo pad and pencil holder.
An object of this invention is to provide a combined memo pad and pencil holder which is adapted to be detachably secured to the bottom of a telephone instrument for holding the pad in front of the instrument.
Another object of: this invention is to provide an improved pencil holder which is formed integral with the pad construction so that a pencil will at all times be secured in a handy position for use with the telephone instrument.
A further object of this invention is to provide in combination with a telephone instrument a memo pad and means for adhesively securing the front flap of the pad to the lower side of the instrument base.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a memo pad constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the pad.
Pig. 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan of the pad showing the pencil holder in its initial extended position.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan view of the pad with the front fiap raised from the writing sheet.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 7"] of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the pad in applied position relative to a telephone instrument.
Pig. 9 is a fragmentary perspective view on a reduced section showing the pad applied to the telephone instrument.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 designates generally a pad which is formed of a plurality of superposed sheets 11 which are secured to a relatively stiff cardboard back 12. The pad lib also includes a flap 13 which is formed integral with the back 12 through a connecting hinge 14. The writing sheets 11 are firmly secured relative to the back 12 and the flap 13 by means of staples or other securing means 15. The flap or top wall 13 is provided adjacent the opposite side edges thereof with a pair of cut-outs ltd which are provided in order that the flap 13 may be bent along sectional line 17 and then extended beneath a telephone instrument, generally indicated at T. The instrument T is provided with supporting feet or pads 18, and these pads or feet 18 are adapted to engage in the cub-outs 16. When the Patented Apr. 2, 1957 flap 13 is positioned beneath the instrument T with the feet 18 engaging in the cut-out 16, the flap 13 will be held against lateral and longitudinal movement with respect to the instrument T. In order to more firmly secure the attachment of the flap 13 to the instrument T, I have provided an adhesive coating 19 which is disposed on the inner side of the flap 13. This coating 19 is a tacky coating and ti e coating w is initially protected by means of a masking tape 28. In applying the flap T3 to the bottom of the instrument T the tape 20 is removed from the tacky coating 19, thereby exposing this tacky coating in order that the coating may adhesively secure the flap 13 to the bottom of the instrument T.
In order to provide a means whereby a pencil may be removably held in a position overlying the sheets 11, a rectangular tongue 21 is cut as indicated by the lines 22 from the back 12 and also from a portion of the flap 13. There are two of these cuts 22 which are: extended from the back 12 through the hinge 14 into the rear portion of the flap 13. The truncated triangular head 23 is also cut from the back 12 and this head 23, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, is adapted to engage against the fold formed by bending of the flap 13 backwardly to an extended position for engagement beneath the instrument T. in forming the pencil holder which is formed by the tongue 21, the head 23 is pushed outwardly from the hackv 12 and the tongue 22 is extended rearwardly, as shown in Fig. 3. he tongue 31 is then bent upon itself to form a loop and this loop is then pushed forwardly between the cut lines 22 so that the loop formed by the bent tongue will be positioned on the upper side of the pad, as shown in Figs. 7 and 9. The pencil 24 may then be extended through the pencil holder which is formed by the tongue 22 anc the pencil 2 will be disposed parallel with the front of the instrument T.
In the use and application of this pad the flap 13 is preferably made substantially shcrter.than the length of the sheets ii. The flap 13 is bent rearwardly along the score line 17 and then the head 2-5 with the tongue 21 is pushed outwardly from the back 12, as shown in Fig. 3. The tongue 21 with the head 23 is then pushed forwardly through the cut lines 22 so that a loop will thereby be formed on the upper side of the pad. At this time the head 23 will be positioned with the inner edge thereof substantially contacting the fold line formed by bending the flap 13 on the score line 17. The masking tape 2% is then removed from the tacky adhesive 19 and the flap 13 is then positioned beneath the instrument T with the feet 13 engaging in the cut-outs 16. At this time the pad will be disposed on the fiat surface on which the instrument T is resting.
What is claimed is:
l. A combined memorandum pad and pencil holder comprising a plurality of superposed writing sheets, a back formed of relatively stilt cardboard, a flap disposed on the upper side of said sheets, a hinge member integral with said flap and back, staples securing said flap, back and sheets together, a tongue formed by a pair of parallel cuts through the rear portion of said flap and back and through said hinge, and a head member integral with the free end of said tongue and cut from said back, forward bending of said tongue through the opening formed by said cuts and formation thereof into a loop forming a looped pencil holder.
2. A combined memorandum pad and pencil holder comprising a plurality of superposed writing sheets, an integral front flap, hinge and back secured to said sheets, a pencil holding tongue cut from said flap, hinge and back, and a head integral with said tongue, said tongue being bendable forwardly through the opening in said flap formed by cutting of said tongue whereby the latter will be disposed in looped formation with said head 1imitthe projection of said tongue and bearing against the ing the projection of said tongue and bearing against the outer side of said flap, and adhesive means for securing outer side of said flap. the pad to a support.
3. A combined memorandum pad and pencil holder comprising a plurality of superposed writing sheets, an 5 Refflellces Cited n h fil f this patent integral front flap, hinge and back. secured to said sheets, UNITED STATES PATENTS a pencil holding tongue out from said flap, hinge and back, a head integral with said tongue, said tongue being gj S 2 bendable forwardly through the opening in said flap 2195677 g g g 'g g 1940 Iormen by cutting of said tongue whereby the latter will in Watts July 29, 1952 be disposed in looped formation with said iinii ting
