United States Patent DESK PAD AND HOLDER Louis L. Bresler, 4328 Colombia Ave., Hammond, Ind. Filed Aug. 9, 1957, Ser. No. 677,261
Claims. (Cl. 281-15) This invention is particularly concerned with improvements in a holder for supporting on a desk or similar surface in convenient position for use a note pad, order book or any other group of sheets which are bound or otherwise joined along a common edge to a relatively stiff backing member.
It is a general object of the invention to provide a pad of note paper or the like and a holder therefor which is adaptedto support the pad on a desk or other surface in a position to enable convenient and easy writing thereon and to hold the pad against displacement during use while permitting removal of one or more pages or sheets, as desired.
It is a more specific object of the invention to provide a holder for a note pad or other group of sheets which are connected along a common edge to a backing member wherein the holder is provided with a pocket having an opening on its upper surface for receiving the backing member on the pad to frictionally hold the pad against displacement relative to the holder when it is Written upon or sheets are torn therefrom.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a note pad which is characterized by a group of sheets bound along one edge to a relatively stiif backing board, and a holder therefor wherein the holder comprises a base member and a top cover member having a generally rectangular slot therein which opens into a pocket for receiving the backing board of the pad and wherein the pad is provided with a filler strip of substantially the same thickness as the cover member which is arranged along the edge of the backing board to which the group of sheets is connected so that when the backing board is passed through the slot and into the pocket in the holder the filler strip will be :seated in the slot and prevent shifting of the pad while at the same time the surface of the filler strip will be flush with the surface of the cover adjoiningthe slotthereby providing a smooth supporting surface for writingon the bottom sheets in the pad as the pad is used and the topfiheets are removed therefrom.
It is another object of the invention to provide a note pad and holder therefor wherein the holderis provided with a top cover member having a rectangular aperture through which the backing member on the pad may be passed and wherein the pad has a rectangular filler strip ,of slightly smaller, dimensions than theaperture which is located on the inner surface of the backing board so ,that when the backing board is passed through the slot the filler strip willbe seated in the aperture with its uppermost surface flush with the adjoining portions of the cover member whereby to prevent displacement of the pad on the holder and to provide a smooth backing surface for writing on the last sheets of the pad when the top sheets are removed therefrom.
It is still auothercbject of the invention to provide a notepad holder having a base plate and a top cover member which ,is arra ged thereon to provide ,a pocket for the backing member of the. notepad and which is provided with a generally rectangular slot through which the backing member is inserted into the pocket and a locking slide mounted adjacent the slot with one end adapted to project into the slot for locking engagement with the edge of the pad and with a handle forming flange on the other end which projects beyond the edge of the holder and which permits the locking slide to be moved to engage its inner end with the edge of the pad and hold the same in position in the slot.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from a consideration of the note pad and holder therefor which are shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of a note pad and a holder therefor which embody therein the principal features of the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross section, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the uppermost surface of the holder with the note pad removed therefrom; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the note pad.
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a note pad 10 and a holder 11 therefor which have incorporated therein structural features adapting the same for use together on a desk or other supporting surface where the note pad 10 is conveniently positioned for writing thereon or for removing one or more of the uppermost pages or sheets thereof. While the pad holder 11 is shown in the drawings with the note pad 10 supported thereon, it will be understood that the holder 11 is adapted to be used with order pads, sales books or any group of sheets that are bound or otherwise joined together along a common edge to a suitable backing member.
The pad holder 11 comprises a generally rectangular base plate 12 which is preferably formed of a relatively heavy metal and which is mounted in a rectangular opening 13 provided in a frame-like member 14, the latter being preferably formed of chipboard or similar material and the opening 13 therein being of a size sulficient to snugly receive the base plate 12. The depth or thickness of the frame member 14 exceeds the corresponding dimension of the base plate 12 by a predetermined amount which will be hereinafter referred to in connection with the description of the note pad 10. The base plate 12 and the frame member 14 in which it is mounted are enclosed in a covering material which preferably comprises a top sheet of leather, simulated leather, cloth or similar material 15 which is arranged with its margins folded down over the peripheral edges of the frame member 14 and turned inwardly into overlapping relation with the margins of a bottom sheet 16. Preferably, a line of stitching, which is indicated at 17, is employed to secure the sheets 15 and 16 to the frame member 14 with the stitching 17 being spaced inwardly of the outer edges of the frame member 14 to form a decorative border around the entire holder. The top surface forming portion 18 of the cover sheet 15 is provided with an elongate rectangular aperture or slot 19 of substantial width and-extending a substantial portion of the distance across the. pad holder. Theslot 19 provides an opening into a pocket 20 which is formed between the uppermost surface of the plate 12 and the cover member 15 due to the difference in the thickness of the base plate 12 and the surrounding frame member 14. The pocket 20 is adapted to receive a portion of the pad 10 when the latter is positioned. for use on the holder 11.
The note pad 10- comprises a bottom or outer base sheet 21 of relatively stiff material such as cardboard or the like, and an inner base member 22 which may be of sheets 23 of paper or like flexible sheet material in stacked t ,5 relation and positioned on the backing members 21 and 22 with the sheets and the backing members connected or joined together along one side edge 24 of the pad by a film of adhesive or an edge strip so that the stack of sheets 23 is normally retained in flat position on the backing members 21 and 22 with the sheets adapted to be removed one or more at a time from the top of the pad by pulling the same loose from the connecting adhesive film along the edge 24. The innermost backing sheet or member 22 of the pad is provided with a perforated or weakened separating line 25 which extends in parallel spaced relation inwardly of the edge 24 on which the glue film is applied and divides the member 22 into a relatively narrow inner strip 26 and a somewhat wider outer strip 27. The strip 27 is adapted to be separated from the strip 26 by tearing along the line 25, after which it is discarded, leaving the pad 10 with the relatively narrow strip 26 interposed between the outer backing member 21 and the sheets 23.
The strip 26 is the same shape and somewhat smaller in dimensions than the corresponding dimensions of the rectangular aperture or slot 19 in the pad holder 11 and the length of the backing member 21 is no greater than the corresponding dimension of the aperture 19 so that when the strip 27 has been removed from the pad the backing member 21 may be passed through the aperture 19 into the pocket 20 between the base plate 12 and the cover member to position the pad with the inner strip 26 in the aperture 19. The backing member 21 has a thickness corresponding approximately to the difference in thickness between the base plate 12 and the frame member 14 and the strip 26 has substantially the same thickness as the material in the cover sheet 15 so that the uppermost surface of the strip 26 is flush with the top surface of the surrounding top portion 18 of the cover sheet 15 thereby providing a smooth uniform supporting surface for the bottom sheets in the pad whereby such sheets may be conveniently written upon. The provision on the pad 10 of the backing member 21 and the inner strip member 26 and the provision on the holder 11 of the aperture 19 in the top cover portion 18 and the pocket between the cover member 15 and the base plate 12 permits the pad 10 to be readily attached to the holder 11 and removed therefrom and insures that the pad is restrained against lateral shifting movement when it is properly positioned on the holder.
In order to insure that the pad 10 will not be pulled out of position when a sheet is removed, the holder 11 is provided with a locking arrangement for the pad which comprises an L-shaped locking slide 30 which is received in a guideway forming recess 31 provided in the frame member 14 at the top edge of the pad holder. The locking slide 30 is arranged with a horizontal body portion 32 in the guideway 31 which has an elongate aperture 33 for receiving a rivet 34 extending through the frame member 14 and the cover members 15 and 16 and limiting the movement of the locking member 30.
taining the pad 10 in position on the holder with the outer backing sheet 21 seated in the pocket 20 which comprises placing one or more spots of pressure sensitive adhesive on the inner face of the backing sheet 21 so that when the pad is properly positioned on the holder with thebacking sheet 21 seated in the pocket 20 and pressure is applied to the top surface of the pad, the
backing sheet 21 will be adhesively' secured to the inner face of the top cover sheet 15. The adhesive employed is, of course, the non-setting type which permits the back ing sheet 21 to be released from the cover member for removal from the holder by pulling on the exposed end of the backing sheet 21. Also the plate 12 may have a coating or covering on its upper surface of resilient material, such as sponge rubber, to assist in holding the backing member 21 in the pocket 20.
The pad 10 may, of course, be used without attaching the same to the holder 11 in which event, the portion 27 of the inner backing sheet need not be removed. The portion 27 of the inner backing sheet 22 may, of course, be easily detached from the portion 26 at any time by bending back the group of sheets 23 and breaking the sheet 22 along the separating line 25, as indicated in Figure 4.
While particular materials and specific details of construction have been referred to in describing the form of the pad and holder which is illustrated in the drawings, it will be understood that other materials and different details of construction may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention.
