citizen of the United States, residing at Swarthmore, in the county of Delaware and State of'Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Check-Notching Devices, of which the following is 2t specification. y

The present invention relates to 1H1PTOV ments in check holding and notching devices and more particularly to those of the general class adapted to hold a pad or pack of restaurant or similar checks and provided with means for notching and thereby marking checks detached from the pack. thus indicating on each check the amout of a purchase or the amount the purchaser is to pay the cashier. p

The primary object of the invention is to provide simplified and improvedmeans for notching the checks whereby the check to be notched may be easily and quickly placed in proper position for notching, the check so placed can be quickly and firmly gripped by a notching member, and moreover, the notching of the check can be effected quickly and cleanly by a simple manipulation of the check while it IS firmly held by the notching member.

To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the features of novelty being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.

A CORPORATION OF PENNSYL-- is held on the forward side of a'base plate or support 1 by a holder 2 which may be of any suitable construction and usually en-' gages the stub portion mot the pad. The checks are usually sub divided along one or more marginaledges, and provided with amount indicating numerals and other" characters to designate the matter to be indicated or marked on the check. The arrangement of the sub-divisions and the in dicating numerals or characters may be va riedto meet the desires of the user.

The device for marking the detached checks is preferably of the type which notches a margin of the check opposite to or in register with the appropriatedesignating numeral or character. This notching de- .vice, according to the present invention,

comprises a notching memberii which is in the form substantially of a lever having an intermediate portion 4, a notching tongue 5 at one end an operating arm 6 at its oppos site end. The notching device is located preferably on aportion of the base plate 1 which extends beyond thelower end of-the pad or pack of checks. As shown in the present instance, the extension 1 of the base plate is for this purpose formed with an opening .7 which may be punched orotherwise suitably formed therein and the edges of the material of the base plate adjacent to this opening are bent rearwardlyand in parallelism to form a pairof pivot supporting ears or lugs 8. -The intermediate portion 4: of the notching member is mounted in the opening 7 and between the ears or lugs 8 and a. pivot pin 9 which extends through the ears and the intermediate portion of i the notching member serves to pivotally support the latter in operative position on the base plate. Thenotching tongue 5011' the notching member is offset relatively to the pivot 9 to an extent suflicient to space it forwardly from the forward side of the base plate extension 1 when the notching member is swung in one direction, thus providing a space between'the notching tongue and the base plate to receive an edge of a detached check, for notching thereof. This notching tongue is preferably of substantially triangular form, as shown, and its apex and its sides are sharpened. The arm 6 on the opposite end of the notching member is offset rearwardly relatively to the notching tongue 5 and it is also offset rearwardly relatively to the pivot 9, so that it will be spaced rearwardly from the rear side of the base plate. A suitable spring is preferably provided which acts to swing the arm 6 rearwardly or away from the base plate, thus retracting the notching tongue to permit insertion of the edge of a check. As shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, a coiled compression spring 10 is shown interposed between the base plate and the arm 6 to serve this purpose; and in Figures 4 and '5 a leaf spring 11 is shown attached to the arm 6 and arranged to bear against the rear side of the base plate, to serve the same purpose. 'In both instances, the spring will act to retract the notching tongue 5 from the forward side of the base plate, so that a check detached from the pad or pack may be readily inserted beneath the notchingtongue and when the check has been adjusted so that the notching tongue is opposite to or in register with the appropriate designating numeral or character to be marked, the arm 6 is pressed forwardly by the finger,the notching' tongue being thereby moved toward the base plate and. caused to grip and firmly clamp the check in proper position. While the check is so held, it is notchedby swinging forwardly the edge of the check opposite to the edge engaged by the notching tongue, the

sharpened point and side edges of the notching tongue then acting to cleanly notch the edge of the check at the point engaged by the notching tongue. In order to limit the angle through which the notching member swings under the action of the spring 10 or 11, the intermediate portion 4 of the notching member may be formed with a: shoulder 12so positioned'as to engage the underside of the base plate adjacent to the forward margin of the opening 7, the size of the opening beneath the notching tongue for the insertion of the check being thus determined by this shoulder.

By constructing the notching member in the form of a lever having relatively offset ends, the forward end of the lever which constitutes the notching tongue may be located at the forward side of the base plate or support and hence the operation of inserting and placing the detached check in proper position relatively to the notching tongue is greatly facilitated, inasmuch as the notching tongue is visible to the operator, and the rear end of the lever may be located behind'the base plate or support, out ofthe way of the pack of checks, and it'may be easily engaged and pressed forwardly by the ger of the operator. The intermediate portion of the lever which extends through the base plate provides a convenient means for pivotally mounting the lever, its side adjacent to the base of the notching tongue provides a stop to gage the depth to which the detached check is inserted, and it may also provide a stop to limit diate portion pivotally mounted in said opening and having relatively offset ends extending in opposite directionsat the respective opposite sides of the support, one

of said ends being adapted to clamp a portion of a check against the sup-port and constituting a notching tongue and the other end constituting an operating part.

A check notching device comprising a support having an opening therein, and a notching member embodying a lever having an intermediate portion movably extending through said opening and having its ends relatively offset and arranged at the respective sides of the support," one of said ends being shaped to clamp an edge of a check and constituting a notching tongue and the other endconstituting an operating arm.

3. A check notching device comprising a support having an opening therein, a cooperative notching member embodying a lever the intermediate portion of which extends movably through said opening, one end of the lever being adapted to bear fiatwise against the surface of a check and consituting anotching tongue and being located at one side of the support-to clamp the check against it and the other end of the lever being located at the other side of the support and constituting an operating arm, and means acting to move the notching tongue in a direction away from the respective side of the support.

4,. A check notching device comprising a support, a notching member embodying a lever formed at one end with a notching tongue arranged at one side of the support and having a substantially flat clamping portion to bear against the face of a check thereon, the lever being formed at the other end with an operating arm arranged at the opposite side of the support, and means acting on said lever to move it in one direction relatively to the support.

5. A device of the character described comprising a base plate having means for holding a pack of checks at the forward side thereof and provided with an opening beyond an edge of said pack, and acheck notching member having its intermediate portion pivotally mounted in said opening, one end of said member overlying the forward side of the base plate and constitutinga notching tongue and the other end of said member being arranged behind the base plate and constituting an operating lever.

6. A check notching device comprising a 10 member providing a stop adjacent to the notching tongue to gage the depth to which the check to be notched is inserted.
