UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
WILFORD D. PREST, WILLIAM G. LYNGE, AND GEORGE O. KNUDSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MARKING-PEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed May 2'7, 1907. Serial No. 375,789-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WIL'FoRD D. PEEST, WVILLIAM C. LYNGE, and GEORGE C. KNUD- SEN, citizens of the United States, residing at 2529 West Kinzie street, A 1, St. Helms Court, and 2397 West Ontario street, respectively, in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain useful Improvements in Marking- Pens, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to pens and has particular reference to marking pens, such as are adapted for use in show-card writing or for marking boxes or packages.
The object of our invention is to provide a pen of the classmentioned which shall hold a large quantity of ink, to the end that more rapid and even work may be accomplished with its use than with pens of this class as heretofore constructed.
A further object is to provide a pen as mentioned, which shall be of small cost to manufacture and shall be strong and durable and not subject to the corrosive action of the ink.
With these objects in View our invention is embodied in the novel pen fully described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pen embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a side view of the blades detached from the handle.
Referring to the drawings 1 indicates the handle, of the pen which may be of any desired shape and composed of any suitable material. It is provided with a kerf, 2. in which are inserted the ends or shanks of a pair of blades, 33. The blades, 3 are stamped out of sheet metal, preferably German silver, as this is not corroded 'by the ink. Each blade comprises a bow portion, 3, a straight nib portion, 3", and a shank portion, 3'. These blades are so formed not lie parallel (see Fig. 3) but when the shanks are forced into the kerf, 2, the nibs are held together with considerable pressure. Each nib is provided with a concave portion or recess, 4, which is stamped therein when the blade is formed. These recesses form a reservoir for the ink, and being formed as shown, hold a considerable amount of ink without being of sufficient size to interfere with the use of the pen. It will be seen by reference to Fig. 2 that the ink containing spaces, 5 between the nibs and including the recesses, 4, is of great capacity. Hence, the ipen may be used for a long time without relling.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a pen of the class described, a pair of bow shaped blades held in a suitable handle and having ink holding recesses formed in their ends, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a handle, a pair of bow shaped blades held therein, and straight nibs on said blades having recesses in said nibs, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, a handle, in combination with a pair of German silver bow shaped blades held therein and having an ink holding recess near the end of each said blade and formed therein, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILFORD D. PREST. WILLIAM C. LYNGE. GEORGE C. KNUDSEN.
