9 Claims. ((1206-4013) The general purposesof my invention are to provide a device for securely holding a pack of purchase tickets or checks, such as are used in restaurants and the like, and on which the amount of the purchase is shown by punching the printed indicia thereon, and providing means for easy separation of successive tickets from the pack as well as the punch required for use in connection with such tickets or checks.
My invention is deemed to be an improvement over devices of the same class that have preceded it in many ways. For instance, it has only a small number of parts and is therefore easier and more economical to manufacture. It is much more sturdy in construction than others due to the manner in which many of its features are combined into integral units, and the manner of assembling the whole. Its smooth knife edge on the clamp holding the tickets enables their separation from the stubs in the clamp to be started with an even edge on the first few tickets, which in turn make it easier to tear-off evenly those further down the pack. Operation of my device is also greatly improved over others by my method of assembly with the spring plate serving at one end as a resilient base, or spring .tension, under the clamp, and on the opposite end as a tray for the pack of tickets or checks Other advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description of the device and the drawing, f which: 7 V

With reference to the foregoing figures, the base plate member 1 is made of sheetmetal and is integral with the inverted U-shaped clamp member 2 and U-shaped tray 3, the latter formdevice ing the bottom and two sides of the clipping receptacle.
The clamp 2 has a depending smooth knife edge 4 on its free end which, as shown in Figure 3, is held tightly againstthe perforations marking the stubs from the main portion of the tickets or checks. This assists materially in obtaining a complete separation of the first few tickets from their stubs directly on the perforated line, and when succeeding tickets are torn off the tear continuesto followsuch perforations because of the pressure of the top tickets, all with little or no attention on the part of the user. Other types of edges on clamps have been unsatisfactory in that they allowed the first few tickets torn from the pack to depart from the perforated line and tear intoeither the stub or the main portion of the ticket, and making it impracticable toseparate on the perforated line the remaining tickets in the pack. s
In addition, if paper checks or tickets are used, the nature of my clamp and knife edge is such that it is possible to use tickets having noperforated line.
As shown in Figure 5, the receptacle for clippings, formed by the tray member 3,v is stamped or cut integral with the base plate member 1, with ears 5, 6, 7, 8, and tab 9,.and is bent into the U-shaped tray 3 as shown in Figure 3. The
tab 9 is riveted or otherwise fixed in the aperture 10, rigidly securing the tray in place. The drilled ears 5 and 6, and indented ears '7 and 8, are bent at right angles to the tray wall, as shown in Figure 3. The bottom of the tray has the aperture 11 shown in Figure 5 so that the contents may be removed when the aperture is open.
The receptacle cover 12 illustrated in Figure 6 is drilled in the top rear corner (Figure 1), the holes thus made registering with the corresponding holes drilled in ears 5 and 6 when the cover is placed in position. The pivot pin 13 (Figure 4) being inserted through such holes and spread on the ends forms a hinge for the cover 12,7which is placed transverse to the tray member 3, as
shown in Figure 4, Indentations in the fronttop lo corners of thecover member, such indentations corresponding with the indentations in the ears 7 and 8, form in combination a snap lock to hold the cover 12 in position, and constitute cover releasable means upon application of suflicient pressure downward on the tab 14.

An integral spring plate member 18 is riveted, welded, or otherwise rigidly secured at approximately its midsection to the base plate member 1, and sprung upwardly, as shown in Figure 1.
lhe section of the spring plate member 18 extending under the clamp 2 is formed as a resilient base 19 for the pack of tickets or checks to be used in the device, the tension of this spring strongly forcing them upwardly against the knife edge 4 and top of the clamp member 2, and holding them in place.
The opposite portion of the spring plate member 18 is stamped or cut and bent to form a tray 20 with sides 21 and 22, as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4, the tray feature being found advantageous toward preventing the end of the pack of tickets becoming disarranged or unintentionally torn from their stubs. In addition the form given to the sides 21 and 22 of the tray 20, in combination with the side flanges 15 and 16 of the base plate member 1, form a guide for the vertical movement of the pack, and the punch member hereinafter described, and also resists side pressure or knocks on the tray member 20 which would otherwise weaken the device at the connection between the spring plate member 18 and the base plate member 1, and eventually separate the parts.
A V-shaped cutting edge, or any other type commonly used, forming the shearing member 23, is made integral with or rigidly secured to the end of the tray 20 on the spring plate member 18, as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4. The shearing member .23, when forced downwardly registers with the cutting edged aperture 17 in the base plate member 1, and forms a punch .by which the tickets are clipped in the manner desired. A hook or angular extension 24'on the base of the shearing member 23 assists in keeping it in register with the aperture 17 and in operative relation thereto.
The ends of the side flanges 15 and 16 adjacent the punch end of the device are shown in the same plane with the opened cutting edge of the punch. Thus, where the ticket is to be punched along its edge those side flanges form a guide against which the ticket may be placed for punching. The placement of the fianges15 and 16 may be varied, of course, according to the type of punch used and the portion or place on the ticket that is to be punched, or the angle that it is desired the cut on the ticket shall take.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a ticket holding and shearing device, comprising a base plate member including an inverted U-shaped clamp on one end, a spring plate secured in midsection to said base member, one end of said spring member forming a resilient base for tickets inserted in said clamp, vertically movable ticket holding means on the opposite portion of said spring member, and punching means secured to said base plate and ticket holding members, said punching means being actuated by the vertical movement of said holding member.
2. In a ticket holding and shearing device, comprising a base plate member including an inverted U-shaped clamp on one end, a spring plate secured in midsection to said base member, one end of said spring member forming a resilient base for tickets inserted in said .clamp, vertically movable ticket holding means on the opposite portion of said spring member, ticket punching means secured to said base plate and ticket holding means and actuated by the vertical movement of said holding means, and ears angularly disposed to the sides of said base member and coacting to guide the vertical movement of said ticket holding and punching means.
3. In a ticket holding and shearing device, comprising a base plate member including an inverted U-shaped clamp at one end, a spring plate member secured in midsection to said base member, one end of said spring member forming a resilient base for tickets inserted in said clamp, a vertically movable U-shaped ticket tray integral with the opposite portion of said spring member, ticket punching means secured to said base plate and tray members and actuated by the vertical movement of said tray member, and ears angularly disposed to the sides of said base member and coacting to guide the vertical movement of said ticket tray and punching means.
4. In a ticket holding and shearing device, comprising an integral base plate member formed at one end to define an inverted U-shaped clamp, and formed at the opposite end to define a receptacle of U-s'haped configuration, hinged means for enclosing said receptacle, a spring plate member secured in midsection to said base member, one end of said spring member forming a resilient base for tickets inserted in said clamp, a vertically movable U-shaped ticket tray integral with the opposite portion of said spring member, ticket punching means secured to said base plate and tray members over said receptacle and actuated by the vertical movement of said tray member, and ears angularly disposed to the sides of said base member and coacting to guide the vertical movement of said ticket tray and punching means.
5. In a ticket holding and shearing device, the combination of an integral base plate member formed at one end to define an inverted U-shaped clamp, and formed at the opposite end to define 1.15
a receptacle of U-shaped configuration, a. transverse U-shaped closure member pivoted at opposite ends of said receptacle and enclosing the openings therein, means for locking said closure member in closed position, a spring plate member secured in midsection to said base member, one end of said spring member forming a resilient base for ticketsinserted in said clamp, a vertically movable U-shape ticket tray integral with the opposite portion of said spring member, ticket punching means secured to said base plate and tray members over said receptacle and actuated by the vertical movement of said tray member, and ears angularly disposed to the sides of said base member and coacting to guide the vertical movement of said ticket tray and punching means.
6. In a ticket holding and shearing device, the combination of an integral 'base plate member formed at one end to define an inverted U-shaped clamp having a knife edge on the free end there of, and formed at the opposite end to define a receptacle of U-shaped configuration, a transverse U-shaped closure member pivoted at 0pby the vertical movement of said tray member,
and ears angularly disposed to the sides of said base member and coacting to guide the vertical movement of said ticket tray and punching means.
7. In a ticket holding and shearing device, the combination of an integral base plate member formed at one end to define an inverted U-shaped clamp having a knife edge on the free end thereof, and formed at the opposite end to define a receptacle of U-shaped configuration, a transverse U-shaped closure member pivoted at opposite ends of said receptacle and enclosing the openings therein, means for locking said closure member in closed position, a shearing edged aperture in said base member over said receptacle a spring plate member secured in midsection to said base member, one end of said spring member forming a resilient base for tickets inserted in said clamp, a vertically movable U- shaped ticket tray integral with the opposite portion of said spring member, a shearing member secured to and depending from the tray end of said spring memberand coacting with the aperture in said base plate member to form a punch, and ears angularly disposed to the sides of said base member and coacting to guide the vertical movement of said ticket tray and shearing member.
8. In a ticket holding and shearing device, the
combination of an integral base plate member formed at one end to define an inverted U-shaped clamp having a knife edge on the free end thereof, and formed at the opposite end to define a receptacle of U-shaped configuration, a transverse U-shaped closure member pivoted at opposite ends of said receptacle and enclosing the openings therein, means for locking said closure member in closed position, a shearing edged aperture in said base member over said receptacle, a spring plate member secured in midsection to said base member, one end of said spring member forming a resilient base for tickets inserted in said clamp, a. vertically movable U-shaped ticket tray integral with the opposite portion of said spring member, a shearing member secured to and depending from the tray end of said spring member and coacting with the aperture in said base plate member to form a punch, and ears angularly disposed to the sides of said base member and coacting to guide the vertical movement of said ticket tray and shearing member, the forward ends of said ears being uniplanar with the opened cutting edge of said punch and forming a guide for tickets placed therein.
9. In a ticket holding and shearing device of the character described, the combination of an integral base plate member formed at one end to define an inverted U-shaped clamp having a knife edge on the free end thereof, and formed at the opposite end to define a receptacle of U- shaped configuration having an aperture in the bottom thereof, a transverse U-shaped closure member pivoted at opposite ends of said receptacle and enclosing the openings therein, means for locking said closure member in closed position, a shearing edged aperture in said base member over said receptacle, a spring plate member secured in midsection to said base member, one end of said spring member forming a resilient base for tickets inserted in said clamp, a vertically movable U-shaped ticket tray integral with the opposite portion of said spring member, a shearing member secured to and depending from the tray end of said spring member and coacting with the aperture in said base plate member to form a punch, means for locking said shearing member in operative relation to said aperture, and ears angularly disposed to the sides of said base member and coacting to guide the vertical movement of said ticket tray and shearing member, the forward ends of said ears being uniplanar with the opened cutting edge of said punch and forming a guide for tickets placed therein.
