FIG. 3
FIG. 4
INVENTORS. JOSEPH R. FALCONE. ANTHONY FALCONE JR.
ATTORNEY.
United States Patent 3,354,564 MARKER DEVICE Joseph R. Falcons, 217 Cooper Lane, De Witt, NY. 13214, and Anthony Falcone, Jr., 207 Gakridge Drive, Camilius, N31. 134131 Filed July 21, 1965, Ser. No. 473,741 1 Claim. (Cl. 46-11) This invention relates to a marker device adapted to be positioned over the edge of an article and yieldingly engaging the same.
The device is particularly advantageous in applying temporary identification to a number of articles as, for eX- ample, containers such as bottles and drinking glasses where a group of persons are simultaneously served beverages. For example, in bowling alleys the members of a team frequently consume bottled beverages. My device may be applied to the top edge of the bottle, and the device formed with numbers or other means to identify the members of the team. Often at house parties, drinking glasses are refilled, and it is desirable that the same glass is returned to each person who has previously used it. Also, the marker can be applied to such bottles and glasses to identify the kind of beverage contained therein. The marker device is also particularly useful as an identification means on containers or the like containing medication or any preparations for patients in hospitals and nurseries. Advertising indicia may also be carried by the marker device.
The invention has as an object a marker device embodying a structure adapted to be produced in large volume, at negligible cost, from plastic material, the marker including a bifurcated pin member, and a plate formed integral therewith, and which serves to carry the identification, or other indicia, the plate being attached to the bifurcated pin member by a frangible connection, whereby the plate may be readily severed from the pin member and used separately as, for example, a golf ball marker.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
In the drawings FIGURE 1 is a side view of a marker device embodying my invention.
FIGURE 2 is an edge view of the device looking to the right, FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a view of the device, similar to FIGURE 1, showing the device applied to the top edge of a drinking glass.
FIGURE 4 is a view, similar to FIGURE 3, showing the marker device applied to the top edge of a bottle.
The marker device consists of a bifurcated pin member having an inner leg 10, and an outer leg designated at 11. The legs are connected by a bight portion 12. The inner leg depends substantially straight downwardly from the bight 12, and has a lower portion 13 flaring outwardly, or in a direction away from the leg 11. The leg 11 is formed at its upper end with an inwardly curved portion 14 connected to a downwardly and outwardly inclined portion 15, which merges with an inwardly curved portion 16. The inwardly curved portion 16 terminates in an outwardly flaring curved portion 17.
A plate 20, shown in the form of a circular disk, is formed integral with the bifurcated pin member and is connected to the outwardly flaring lower portion 17 of the leg 11 by areas 21 of greatly reduced cross sectional dimension, and forming a frangible connection to the disk 20, whereby the disk 20 can be readily separated from the leg member 11.
The marker member is economically produced by being moulded from hard resilient plastic material. In the arrangement disclosed, the leg portion 11 at the joinder of the portions 16, 17, is yieldingly maintained in close proximity to, or in engagement with, the intermediate portion of the inner leg 10. Due to the diversely flaring end portions 13, 17, of the legs, the device is readily applied over the edge of an article and yieldingly maintains engagement therewith. Preferably, the inner confronting surfaces of the intermediate portions of the leg members are formed with serrations 23 and which serve to more firmly afiix the marker to articles, especially those formed of fabric material.
Identification or advertising indicia is applied to the disk 29 by being printed or moulded thereon. Due to the formation of the leg 11, the same engages the outer surface contour of the standard bottle finish. For example, the bead 25 at the bottle top is received by the inwardly curved portion 14. The bumper ring portion 26 of the bottle is engaged by the inclined portion 13 and the inwardly curved portion 16.
The severed disk 20 can be put to various usesfor example, it can mark the position of a golf ball on a putting green, or can be used as a check disk. It will be understood that the device may be moulded from plastic material of various colors, which may also serve for identification.
What I claim is:
A marker device comprising a bifurcated pin member formed of hard, resilient, plastic material and adapted to be positioned over the edge of an article, one leg of said pin member extending substantially straight downwardly from the bight of said pin member, the lower end portion of said leg flaring outwardly, the upper portion of said other leg contiguous to said bight curving inwardly and merging with an outwardly inclined portion merging with an inwardly curved portion and terminating in an outwardly flaring lower end portion, the junction of said inwardly curved portion with said outwardly flaring end portion being located contiguous to the lower end of the straight portion of said one leg, a plate formed integrally with said pin member and being connected to the outwardly flaring lower end portion of said other leg by a frangible connection.
