TABBED sanit/r.4
Application led May 7, 1915. Serial No. 26,611.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN C. HUB, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tabbed Sheets,
of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to improvements in celluloid faced sheets 'and particularly to securing means for' tabs whereby such means passes throughan isolated opening in the sheet and is made homogeneous with the tab structure itself.
More specifically the invention relates to a tabbed sheet or card comprising a sheet or card having openings near but within the edge of the card and a tab structure having celluloid sheet or card engaging strips eX- tending over the tab edge of the card and over the openings and having Celluloid bonds extending through the openings and holding the securing strips in place.
The invention may be further brieiy surnmarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a card and of the tab structure with part broken away; Fig. 2 is a section upon the line 2-2; Fig. 3 is a section upon the line 3-3; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a modified form.
The invention is applicable to any structure where celluloid facings are to be yapplied to a sheet or card and particularly where a tab is to ybe applied, and I have illustrated the invention in the drawings as applied to a tabbed index card, and this specific application will suffice to explain and illustrate the invention.
In carrying out the invention the card 1 is provided near its tab edge with openings 2, which are preferablyl round and are punched through the body of the card so that they are isolated, as it were, from the Inserted in these openings are bonds 3, preferably of celluloid, each in the form of a disk, which fits nicely in its opening.
The tab structure itself preferably comprises an inner piece 4 of celluloid preferably of the thickness of the card 4and extendingibeyond the tab edge. This inner piece be recessed toward one tab end, as shown at 5, to provide an insert ocket, as will later appear. Folded over t is inner piece and i inward by pressure so 4 may/ tab structure Specification of Letters Patent. A

extending down over celluloid. The extended side portions of this casing form securing strips 7, which4 are adapted ltolap onto the card and extend entirely over thecelluloid bonds 3.
The tab structure itself is preferably made up before being applied to the card and in application, the pcrtion of the card about the bonds 3 and the surfaces of these bonds are moistened with any suitable solvent for celluloid and the tab structure is applied under pressure and heat, with the result that the moistened celluloid securing strips adhere to the surface of the card and become amalgamated with the bonds so that there is a homogeneous celluloid structure passing through openings within the edge of the card and serving to unite the card and the tab structure. 1
In thel modification shown in Fig. 4, the portions 8 of the securing strips Z are forced that they touch within the openings 2 and form a celluloid bond of the securing strips in the openings 2.
I have shown the tab structure as having an inner piece 4 of 'celluloid with an insert in this piece, but it is obvious that the inner piece may be made of solid celluloid or may be a por-tion of 'cardboard which forms either a partl of the card itself or a separate piece. It is also obvious that the casing when secured to the inner piece forms an insert pocket for a suitable legend strip 9.
It will be seen from the foregoing that by securing the tab tothe card in this way a very secure bond between the parts is produced without any undue increase in the thickness of the product.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination with a sheet having an isolated opening therein, of celluloid plates on both sides thereof, and a celluloid bond united with the side plates and extending through the openings in the sheet.
2. A tabbed sheet structure comprising a sheet havingV an isolated opening Within the tab edge, and a tab structure having a celluloid cover with a celluloid bond extending through the opening in the sheet.
z3. In a tabbed sheet structure, a sheet having an isolated opening within the tab edge, a, celluloid insert within said opening, and a yextending onto the sheet over said insert and amalgamated' therewith.
4. In a'tabbed sheet structure,
a sheet havhaving celluloid binder strips the card is a casing 6 of ing` an isolated opening within the tab edge, an inner tab body extending beyond the tab edge, a Celluloid side plate member having portions extending over the inner tab body and onto the sheet over the opening therein, and a Celluloid bond within said opening between said side plate portions.
5. In a tabbed sheet structure, a. sheet having an isolated opening within the tab edge,
an inner tab body of Celluloid extending being anl isolated opening within the tab edge, an inner tab body of Celluloid extending beyond the tab edge, a Celluloid side plate member having portions extending over the inner tab body and onto the sheet over the opening therein, and a Celluloid bond insert arranged. within the opening within the sheet, the parts of the tab structure, the side plate portions and the bond being amalgamated to form a homogeneous structure.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two Witnesses as follows.
