Description

June 8, H H COLEMAN REFILL BOOK Filed NOV. 18, 1935 sum/u Henry H. 50/527752? h Patented June 8, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
REFILL BOOK Application November 18, 1935, Serial No. 50,328
3 Claims.
This invention relates to refillable blank books,
and refers particularly to refillable check books.
Check books, especially the larger ones, are now constructed so that the pad of leaves, consisting of the stubs and detachable checks, is readily removable from the cover to enable the pad of stubs remaining after the checks have all been used, to be removed from the cover and a new pad of leaves inserted in its place.
Throughout the specification and claims where the word pad is used, it is intended to include any stack or group of leaves whether the individual leaves be bound together by a gummed edge, sewing, or the like, or loosely held assembled 15 by a ring binder, or the like, as in the embodiment here illustrated.
Heretofore, no means was provided for protecting the pad of stubs after it was removed from the cover. Consequently, the individual stubs were often torn or lost in handling the same for filing, especially when they were held together by a loose leaf ring binder. To overcome this objection, this invention has as an object to provide an inner cover member or jacket so associated with the pad of leaves that upon removing the pad of stubs from the cover, the inner cover or jacket is foldable about the pad of stubs to form a neat packet and provide a protecting enclosure for the stubs.
With the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, this invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the'hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates one 40 complete example of the physical embodiment of the invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for thepractical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a refillable check book with the pad of stubs and checks shown detached from the cover;
Figure- 2 is a perspective view showing the pad of check stubs after the checks have been detached therefrom, and illustrating the manner in which the inner cover member is prepared for application about the stubs; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing a pad of stubs enclosed by the inner cover.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a pad of leaves which in the present instance comprises detachable checks 6 and their stubs l. The pad of leaves is bound together by a ring binder 8 comprising a plurality of rings 9 passed through apertures III in the stubs 1 and a transversely curved plate II on which the rings 9 are mounted. The curved plate II is adapted for sliding engagement with a channel l2 riveted or otherwise secured to a cover 13. When the plate II is engaged in the channel 12, the pad of leaves is detachably fastened in the cover l3 in such a manner that the cover does not interfere with the complete opening of the book.
Underlying the bottom of the pad of leaves is an inner cover Id. The inner cover M has the rings 9 passed through apertures therein, the same as the stubs 'I so that it is directly assembled with the pad of leaves. As best shown in Figure 1, this inner cover M which is preferably formed of relatively heavy and stiff paper, is coextensive with the pad of leaves and has four transverse creases or score marks l5, l6, l1, and iii, to define bending lines and facilitate the application or folding of the inner cover about the pad of stubs.
Besides the four score marks or creases to N3, the under cover also has two U-shaped cuts l9 and entirely therethrough. From the ends of the U-shaped cut 20, perforations 2| extend to the opposite side edges of the under cover to facilitate tearing off its outer end portion 22, as shown in Figure 2. Upon tearing off this outer end portion, a tongue 23 is formed which is engageable in the slit defined by the cut [9 when the cover member I4 is folded about the pad of stubs (with all the checks detached), the rings and the curved plate supporting the rings as shown in Figure 3. In this manner a neat enclosure is provided for the stubs which permits the same to be filed away without danger of loss or tearing.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a refill book including a cover, a pad of leaves comprising stubs and detachable portions, binder rings securing the pad of leaves together at their stubs, fastening means attached to the rings to removably secure the pad of leaves to the cover, and an inner cover held assembled with the pad of leaves by the rings, said inner cover being co-extensive in size and shape with the complete leaves to serve as a fiat uninterrupted backing therefor and to completely encircle the pad of stubs and the rings together with the fastening means after the detachable portions have been detached and the padv of stubs removed from the cover, and cooperating means on the opposite end portions of the inner cover for detachably securing the same together:
2. In a refill book, an outer coverhaving fastening means thereon, a pad of leaves comprising stubs and detachable portions, a binder for holding the leaves together at their stubs, means on the binder slidably engageable with the fastening means on the outer cover for removably fastening the pad of leaves in the outer cover, an inner cover held assembled with the pad of leaves by the binder, said inner cover being co-exten'sive in size and shape with the whole leaves and being scored at spaced intervalson'l'i'nes parallel with the bound ends of the leaves to facilitate folding the inner cover about the binder and the pad of stubs from which the detachable portions have been detached upon removal of the pad of' stubs from the outer cover to provide a protecting enclosureabout the binder and the pad of stubs,
and cooperating interengaging means carried by spaced portions of the inner cover for securing the same about the pad of stubs and the binder.
3. In a refill book including a cover, a channel guideway carried by the cover, a pad of leaves comprising stubs and detachable portions, binder rings securing the pad of leaves together at their stubs, a sheet metal plate attached to the rings and slidably engageable with the channel guideway to removably secure the pad of leaves to the cover, said plate having its marginal edges unprotected, an inner cover held assembled with the pad of leaves by the rings, said inner cover being of length tocornpletely encircle the pad of stubs, the binder rings and the sheet metal plate supporting the rings to provide an enclosure therefor which permits the same to be
