(61. 282-24) This invention relates generally to the art of manufacturing and marketing pads or sets of interleaved white sheets and carbon sheets in convenient form for reproducing or duplicating purposes on the typewriter.
For the purpose of reproducing or making duplicates of typewritten matter on the typewriter, it is the practice to place a sheet of carbon paper between the original or ribbon copy and a sheet of White paper or to place a plurality of carbon sheets between a plurality of white paper sheets and the original or ribbon copy. In order to do this the typist usually has to locate the carbon sheets and the White paper sheets and when found has to assemble the white paper sheet, the carbon sheet and the original sheet, with the ruled lines on the white sheets in alignment. This procedure is laborious, time consuming and often the carbon sheet is placed upside down and often the ruled lines are not in register. Furthermore, the white sheets and the hands of the typist are liable to become smudged.
It is a principal object of the present invention to avoid the foregoing disadvantages by providing an assembly or assemblies constituted by a carbon sheet and an attached white paper sheet, in convenient form, to be used with a separate white paper sheet, constituting the original or ribbon copy superimposed thereon, in ready made form, for insertion into the typewriter ready for typing thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pad of carbon sheets with white paper sheets interleaved therebetween, attached to each other at one end and provided with a stub defined by spaced glue spots and by a perforated line at one end and provided with a second perforated line spaced inwardly of the stub line, for use with a separate original or ribbon copy sheet, removal of the stub providing ready means for making erasures on the interleaved white sheets while on the typewriter, and the presence of the second line of perforations providing ready means for separating the original or ribbon copy sheet and the interleaved white sheet or sheets from the carbon sheets with a single snap action upon removal from the typewriter.
Still another object is to provide a pad of carbon sheets and interleaved white ruled sheets of legal cap size attached to each other at one end by adhesive and readily separated or torn off of the pad in assemblies or units of a single carbon sheet superimposed on and attached to a single ruled white sheet, or in assemblies or units of two or more carbon sheets with white sheets interleaved therebetween, the assemblies or units being ready to receive a ruled white sheet of similar size in superimposed relation on the uppermost carbon sheet to serve as the original or carbon sheet, the carbon sheets and interleaved white sheets having a stub at one end thereof defined by a perforated line for removal to permit erasures on the interleaved white sheets while on the typewriter and having a second line of perforations inwardly of the stub perforated line whereby the interleaved white sheets are readily separated from the carbon sheets by a single snap action upon removal from the typewriter.
Another major object according to a modification of the invention is to provide a business or professional form in the form of a set of paper sheets or leaves with indicia thereon interleaved with carbon sheets therebetween, to wit, a so-called one-time carbon interleaved snap-apart business form.
An important object of the invention is to provide a onetime snap-apart business form with a perforated line through the paper sheets and carbon sheets to permit the stub to be torn off and to permit the paper sheets and carbon sheets to be separated at the top for the purpose of making erasures.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a one time snap-apart business form with a perforated line through the paper sheets only to permit the paper sheets to be separated from the carbon sheets by a single normal snap-apart operation after the stub has been removed for erasing purposes and upon removal from the typewriter.
In the ordinary business stub form sets, the paper sheets or leaves are glued together across the top thereof and the carbon sheets are interleaved therebetween with the tops of the carbon sheets glued to the paper sheets. A perforated line extends across the paper sheets below the top edge of the carbon sheets to permit the stub, with the carbon sheets attached to be separated from or torn off of the paper sheets. In tearing off the stub with carbon sheets attached, it often happens that the tear accidentally intersects the top of the paper sheets below the perforated line, thereby damaging the paper sheets.
Another object of the invention is to provide a onetime snap-apart business form with a perforated line defining a stub thereabove, with means for limiting the tearing of the paper sheets below the line when the stub is torn otf from the paper sheets so as not to damage the paper sheets with the indicia and lines thereon.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings and to the claim appended hereto.

Referring in detail to the invention, in FIG. 1 a pad of interleaved carbon sheets and white paper sheets embodying the preferred form of my invention is shown and designated by the reference numeral 10. The pad consists of a plurality of carbon sheets 12 with white paper sheets 14 therebetween, the carbon sheets being disposed with their carbon surfaces against the upper surfaces of the white sheets. The white sheets are of legal cap size of the form, parts and are provided with a double marginal line 16 on the left hand side forming a Wide margin 18 and with a single marginal line on the right hand side forming a narrow margin 22. The white paper sheets 14 are slightly longer than the carbon sheets 12 providing a space 24 at the bottom of the pad adapted to be pinched by the fingers and providing a shorter space 26 at the top. The carbon sheets at their outer or attaching extremities are free of carbon material to provide an uncoated band or clearance. The carbon sheets and white sheets are superimposed on a backing sheet 15 of cardboard or the like to provide the necessary rigidity to the pad.
In accordance with the invention, the ends of the white paper sheets 14 with the shorter spaces 26 are juxtaposed and attached to each other and to the top of the backing sheet 15 by a strip of adhesive along the top thereof. Inwardly of the line of adhesive, the carbon sheets 12 and the white paper sheets 14 are attached to each other by aligned spaced spots 31) of adhesive. Inwardly of the line of spots 30, there is a transverse perforated line 32 cut into the carbon sheets 12 and the white sheets 14 forming an outer stub. Inwardly of the perforated line 32 there is another transverse perforated line 34 cut into the white paper sheets 14 only as seen in FIG. 4, forming an inner stub.
The pad 10 comprises a plurality of assemblies or units of carbon sheets and white paper sheets, an assembly being constituted by a white paper sheet 14 and a carbon sheet 12 glued at one end to the white paper sheet as indicated at in FIG. 3. The white sheet 14 extends slightly above the top of the carbon sheet leaving the space 26. These assemblies are attached together in the pad by a strip of adhesive along the top. The glued carbon sheet or sheets and the attached white sheet or sheets 14 above the line 32 constitute the outer stub and the sheets between the lines 32 and 34 constitute the inner stub. A carbon sheet 12 is uppermost on the pad as shown in FIG. 1.
In using the improved pad 10, if it is desired to make reproductions or duplicates of the matter typed on the ribbon or original white paper sheet (not shown), an assembly or assemblies of carbon sheets 12 and white paper sheets 14 are torn from the top of the pad so as to be separated therefrom. The original or ribbon copy of white sheet of the same size as the white sheet or sheets 14 is superimposed on the top sheet of the removed assembly, which is a carbon sheet, with its edges and ruled lines in alignment with the edges and ruled lines on the white sheets 14. The assembly with the original superimposed thereon is inserted into the typewriter, the stub end of the assembly serving as the leading end and the open end of the assembly serving as the trailing end. The papers are now in position ready for typing and the typed matter on the ribbon copy will be reproduced or duplicated on the white sheets 14 without danger of the ruled lines being out of alignment.
If it is desired to make an erasure on the white sheets 14 While the assembly or set is in the typewriter, it is only necessary to tear off the stub along the perforated line 32. The top end edges of the remaining white paper sheets 14 and the carbon sheets 12 are unattached and may be separated at the top for the purpose of making the necessary erasure.
After the typing has been completed and the assembly or set and the original white paper sheet have been removed from the typewriter, the original sheet is taken off the assembly and the white paper sheets 14 of the assembly may be readily separated from the carbon sheets of the assembly by grasping the stub portion of the assembly above the perforated line 34 with the fingers of one hand and by grasping the space 24 at the bottom of the sheets 14 with the fingers of the other hand and by pulling in opposite directions, the white sheets 14 will snap off along the perforated line 34 leaving the stub and carbon sheets 12 in one hand and leaving the white sheets 14 in the other hand.
If the stub had been torn 011 of the assembly during the typing operation, then when the original white sheet and the assembly are taken out of the typewriter, the white sheets 14 of the assembly may be readily separated from the carbon sheets 12 thereof by pinching the white sheets 14 above the perforated line 34 with the fingers of one hand and by pinching the space 24 on the bottom of the sheets by the fingers of the other hand and by pulling in opposite directions, the white sheets 14 will tear along the perforated line 34, leaving the portion of the white sheets above said line and the carbon sheets 12 in one hand and the torn off white sheets in the other hand.
Referring now to the modification of the invention shown in FIGS. 5 to 10, inclusive, herein the invention is applied to a professional or business form designated generally by the reference numeral 10. The form consists of a set of sheets 12 of paper (three sheets being shown) and sheets 14 of carbon interleaved therebetween. The paper sheets 12 are of rectangular shape and of similar dimensions, and the sheets 14 of carbon are of similar shape and of similar dimensions but the carbon sheets are smaller in dimensions than the paper sheets leaving a margin 16 at the top of the paper sheets clear of the carbon sheets and a margin 18 at the bottom of the paper sheets clear of the carbon sheets.
The paper sheets 12 are secured together along the margin 16' by spaced spots 20 of adhesive. Similarly the sheets 12 and the carbon sheets 14 are secured together along a line adjacent the top edges of the carbon sheets 14 by means of spaced spots 22 of adhesive. A line 24' of perforations is formed across each of the paper sheets 12 below the top edge of the carbon sheets 14' indicated in dotted lines at 26, and a line of perforations 28 across each of the carbon sheets 14' inwardly of the adhesive spots 22. The glued paper sheets 12' and carbon sheets 14' above the perforated lines 24' and 28' constitute the stub.
In accordance with the invention, a second line of perforations 30' is formed across the paper sheets 12 spaced inwardly from the perforated lines 24 and 28.
The front surfaces of the paper sheets 12 are printed with horizontal spaced lines 33, 35, 36 with spaced vertical lines 38 intersecting the line 35, to provide spaces for indicia 40, indicating date shipped, terms, etc. and with spaced vertical lines 42 providing vertical columns 44 for dates shipped, amounts, etc.
Other indicia 46 is printed on the front surfaces to indicate sellers name, invoice number, customers order, date shipped, etc. Indicia 48 may also be printed indicating the title of the form, such as Invoice. Spaced holes 51) may be formed in the bottom of the sheets 12' to provide means for hanging the set on supporting nails, etc.
An important advantage of the invention is that when it is desired to make an erasure while the form is in the typewriter, the stub above the lines 24', 28' can be easily and readily torn off along the lines 24, 28' as seen in FIG. 9. This permits the paper sheets 12' and carbon sheets 14 to be separated at the top and inserts placed between the paper sheets and carbon sheets at the places desired to be erased so as not to smudge the paper sheets.
It will also be noted that after the stub has been removed from the form while in the typewriter for the purpose of making erasures, and the form minus the stub has been removed from the typewriter, the portion 54 of the paper sheets above the line 3% may be grasped by the fingers of one hand and the portions of the paper sheets 12 below the bottom ends of the carbon sheets 14' may be grasped by the fingers of the other hand as shown in FIG. 10 and by pulling in opposite directions, the portion 54 and the carbon sheets 14 are separated as a unit from the paper sheets 12' by a single pulling operation.
Any deflection downwardly of the tear from the line 24' is caught and stopped by the lower or inner perfo- 5 rated line or severance line 30' so that the tear will not extend beyond the line 30'. The paper sheets bearing the ruled lines and indicia thereon are thus protected from accidental damage by ineffective tearing of the sheets.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that changes in details of construction might be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the principle of the invention and I desire therefore to be limited only by the state of the prior art and the appended claim.
I claim:
As an article of manufacture, a rectangular pad comprising a plurality of assemblies of carbon sheets and paper sheets, and a cardboard backing sheet, the assemblies and cardboard sheet fastened together by adhesive over one end thereof, each assembly comprising a carbon sheet superposed on a paper sheet, said paper sheet facing said carbon sheet, at least one assembly adapted to be separated from the pad, each said carbon sheet and each said paper sheet of an assembly having a marginal binding stub, said binding stubs overlapped and attached together to form a binding by which said carbon sheets and paper sheets are bound into the pad, aligned Weakened severance lines in said carbon sheets and in said paper sheets, respectively, positioned inside of said binding stubs whereby said binding may be severed along said weakened severance lines, thus severing said binding stubs, for making erasures while juxtaposed assemblies are in the machine, and weakened severance lines respectively positioned only in said paper sheets inwardly of said first-mentioned severance lines with both of said severance lines being located inwardly of the adhesive connection between the carbon sheet and the paper sheet and thus forming a plurality of overlapping detachable stubs, on said paper sheets, and a selected grip formation remote from said last-mentioned weakened lines whereby the paper sheets may be gripped to the exclusion of the carbon sheets while the assemblies are gripped and held at said second mentioned overlapping detachable stubs for effecting severance of the paper sheets along said second mentioned weakened severance lines and at the same time separating the carbon sheets and the paper sheets from each other, said carbon sheets having a clearance at said one end, extending from the extremities thereof to a point below the second-mentioned severance lines.
