Description

IlL, assignor to LeonVVheeler, Geneva, Ill Application February 8, 1937, Serial No. 124,704
4 Claims.
My invention relates to an improvement in leaf holding devices which is particularly applicable to the visible holding of multiple sheet systems. It may be employed for example to hold ledger sheets or to hold overlapping filing cards or sheets, the particular sheets with which my device is employed forming no part, of themselves, of the present invention.
One purpose is the provision of ready means for holding a plurality of sheets in such fashion that they may be visibly inspected and, while firmly held in position during inspection and storage, may very readily be released for the removal or insertion of one or more or all of the sheets involved.
Another purpose is the provision of improved means for holding such sheets, as a group, in a file, ledger case, backing, or the like.
Another purpose is the provision of means for 20 readily removing the sheets as a group or unit from the support in which they are normally positioned.
Another purpose is the provision of improved means for holding them firmly in position While ready for practically instantaneous removal.
Another purpose is the provision of filing means, employing straight posts, which will effect a maximum economy of space and as contrasted, for example, to filing systems in which books 30 with rings or curved posts are employed.
Other purposes will appear from time to time in the course of the specification and claims.
I illustrate my invention more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan View;
Figure 2 is a section on ure 1;
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of m Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged section, similar to Figure 3, but showing the parts in different position.
Like parts are indicated by like symbols 5 throughout the specification and drawing.
Referring to the drawing, I indicates any suitable base which may, for example, be the back of a ledger or the like, provided with side covers 2 and 3. Mounted upon it I illustrate a channel member including a bottom portion or strip 4 having. along the opposite edges thereof upstanding flanges 5 and 6. The channel may be secured to the back I in any suitable manner, for example by rivets 1. At one end the flanges 5 and 6 are connected by a transverse pin or the line 2-2 of Figfixed post 8. At the opposite end they are notched as at 9.
- It indicates a rivet positioned below the notch 9 of the side flange 5. Pivoted with or upon it is the lever' I I which is flared outwardly as at l2 to ride over the outwardly projecting stop l3. Associated with the lever II and in effect forming with it a bell crank lever is the lever portion l4, shown for example in Figures 3 and 4. I5 is a corresponding lever pivoted to the side flange 6. 10
The levers l4 and I5 carry a transverse locking post |6 which, when the parts are in the position of Figure 3, penetrates the notches 9. When in that position, the stop l3, as shown in Figure 3, serves to hold the above described lever structure in the closed position.
20, illustrate ledger leaves, filing leaves or the like which may be held between a pair of binder bars or strips 2|, 22. Each one of these is provided with a plurality of straight posts 23, 20 which may be tapered, and which are shown as staggered, and which penetrate apertures 24 in the leaves 20. Each one of the bars 2|, 22 is provided at each end with notches 25, 26.
Assume that it is desired to position a plu- 25 rality of leaves, the leaves may be ali-ned and gripped or held between the binding bars or strips 2|, 22, with the binder post 23 in binding or aperture penetrating position. The unit so formed can then be locked in position between the channel flanges 5, 6 by engaging the notches 25, as shown in Figure 4, with the fixed post 8. The unit is then dropped into the position in which the bars 2|, 22 are shown in Figure 3 and the lever l, which was initially in the position of Figure 4, is then moved down into the looking position of Figure 3. The result is to carry the post I6 into the notches of the side flanges 5 and 6 and also into the notches 26 of the bars or strips 2|, 22.
It will be realized that, whereas I have described and illustrated a practical and operative device, nevertheless many changes may be made in the size, shape, number and disposition of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore wish my description and drawing to be taken as in a broad sense illustrative or diagrammatic, rather than as limiting me to the precise showing of the description and drawing.
I claim:
1. In a securing device for leaves and the like, a unit to be secured, including a pair of opposed but freely separable binder bars, said opposed binder bars having pins extending toward each 55 other, a base for receiving said unit, including parallel upstanding flanges separated by a space suflicient to permit the unit to penetrate therebetween, with the ends of the pins extending from the opposed binder bars overlapping, said upstanding flanges constituting thereby locking means for preventing lateral separation of the opposed binder bars, fixed locking abutment means at one end of said flanges, movable look-- ing abutment means at the other end of said flanges, and means for moving said movable abutment means into locking position when said unit is positioned within said flanges with one end in operative relationship with said fixed abut;- ment means, said fixed locking abutment including a fixed post extending between said flanges, the ends of said binder bars being formed to penetrate beneath said post.
2. In a securing device for leaves and the like, a base including parallel upstanding flanges, fixed abutment means at one end oi said flanges, movable abutment means positioned at the other end of said flanges, and a unit including a pair of opposed but freely separable binder bars, said opposed binder bars having pins extending toward each other, said binder bars being notched at each end, said unit being adapted to be positioned with the notches at one end receiving said fixed abutment means and the notches at the other end receiving said movable abutment means, said unit being adapted to penetrate between said flanges, with the ends of the pins extending from the opposed binder bars overlapping, said upstanding flanges constituting thereby locking means for preventing, lateral separation of the opposed binder bars, and means for moving said movable abutment means into and out of locking position.
3. In a securing device for leaves and the like, a base including parallel upstanding flanges, a fixed post extending across one end of said flanges, a movable post pivoted in relation to the opposite ends of said flanges, and a unit, including a pair of opposed but freely separable binder bars, said opposed binder bars having pins extending toward each other, adapted at one end to interpenetrate with said fixed post, and at the other end to interpenetrate with said movable post, and means for moving said movable post into and out of interpenetrating position with said binder bars.
4. In a securing device for leaves and the like, a unit to be secured, including a pair of opposed but freely separable binder bars, binder posts secured to said bars and extending therebetween for penetrating said leaves, a base for receiving said unit including parallel flanges separated by a space suflicient to permit the unit to penetrate therebetween, but insufficient to permit a separation of the binder bars sufficient to permit escape of the leaves from the binder posts, normally fixed locking abutment means at one end of said flanges, movable locking abutment means at the other end of said flanges, the ends of each of the opposed binder bars being notched to permit the penetration of said locking abutment means therein, and means for moving said movable abutment means into locking position when the unit is positioned within and between said flan es with the notches of the opposite ends of the opposed binder bars in operative engagement with said normally fixed locking abutment.
