H. SCHOOLBERG LOOSE LEAF BINDER SHEETS AND DEVICE FOR MANIPULATING THE SAME Filed Oct. 8, 1927 Patented Aug. 28, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY SCHOOLBERG, OF PITTSFUBGH. PENNSYLVANIA.
Loosn-LEAr-Bmnnn snnn'rs AND nnvrcn m mamrutarme THE sun Applicationfiled october 8, 1927. Serial No. 224,872.
This-application constitutes a continuation in part of my pending application filed November 30, 1926, Serial No. 151,621, for an improved visible loose-leaf index and record,
and the present invention relates to sheets for a loose-leaf binder and a device for manipulating the same and more particularly to a device to be used in connection with looseleaf visible indexsheets of the character employed in loose-leaf binders shown in sa d application. j
Among the objects of the present invention are, to provide a device of the character specified that may be advantageously employed for inserting, spacing, and removing collectively, a series ofloose-leaf index sheets; and, to provide a device for manipulating the sheets without necessity of removing the cover'of the binder or opening the prongs or rings or separating the posts employed in the binder for connecting these sheets.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be pointed out herein or be apparent from the description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawin s:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the device embodying my invention;
Fig. 2, a side elevational view, showing the top or cover member of the device raised a slight distance above the lower or base member;
Fig. 3, aplan view, showing a series of loose-leaf visible index sheets, with the device embodying my invention shown in connection therewith.
Fig. 4. is aplan view of the device shewing the top member in a modified form- As illustrated and as preferred, the device or means for manipulating the sheets of a loose-leaf binder comprises a base member 5 consisting of a stripof sheet material formed or provided with a series of upstanding alinednniformly spaced pins 6; and a similar top or cover member 7 having a series of correspondingly spaced perforations 8 in the form ofslots opening at one-edge thereof.
' These two members 5 and 7 are joined toso gether at one end by a rivet or other suitable means designated by the numeral 9. It will be noted that the connecting member 9 is of such a character as to permit a loose connec- 'tion between said members 5 and 7. This as loose connection is for the purpose of permitting both a horizontal adjustment or movement of the top member relatively to the bottom member 5, as shown by. Fig. 1, and also a vertical movement of said member 7 relative to the member 5, as shown by Fig. 2.
' I prefer to form the member 5 from a thin flexible metallic material such, for example, as aluminum. The member 5 may be made of the same material or a different material.
The device is designed to be used in connectionwith a series of loose-leaf visible index sheets, and in Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have shown a series of these sheets indicated generally by the numeral YO. As shown, each sheet 10 is provided with a slotted portion 11 for the purpose of securing the sheets to.the
posts, prongs, etc. of a loose-lea-fbinder, not w shown. In addition to the slots 11, the sheets i are formed with a series of openings or perforations 12 spaced at distance apart corresponding to the distance between the pins of the member 5.
From the above, it will be. noted that the 1 device may be readily applied to a series of sheets 10 by inserting the pins 6 of the lower member 5 into the openings 12 of thesheet-s. After this is effected, upper member 7 is swung towards member 5, so that the slots thereof will receive the ins 6 of member 5, and the sheets will thus I e securely clamped between the members of the sheet-manipulatmg devlce and may be collectively inserted,
spaced, and removed from the binder in a quick and convenient manner. I
It will be further noted that a series of loose-leaf visible index sheets may be inserted, removed, or shifted from one position to another position within the binder in one operation, while retaining the indexing relationship to each other and without the necessity of separating rings or prongs, or remov ing the top cover of the bindnfor the purpose of changing',,the positiori'of the sheets therein. q
The use of the sheets of the character above described requiresa frequent shifting of a 7 group relatively to the posts or rings of the binder, in order to insert one or more new sheets in their proper order, or to readjust the sheets when one or more are removed, and by the use of the device as herein shown and described, the manipulations may be readily eflzected- Referring to Flg. 4, I have shewn a modification of Fig. 1. In this illustration the top member 7 does not have any notches to receive the pins but instead isfiiade of narrower width and is pivoted at one side of the center of the base member and of the line of pins so as to lie normally against one side of the pins or to be swung freely away from them and to one side of the base.
I claim:
1. A device for manipulating the sheets of a loose leaf binder comprising a base member and a top member means for pivotally connecting said members at one end of the device to permit vertical and horizontal swingingmovements of the top memberrelative to the base member.
2. A device for manipulating the sheets of a loose leaf binder comprising a base member and a top'member, means for pivotally connecting said members at one end of the device to permit vertical and horizontal swinging movements of the top member relative to the base member, said base member provided with aseries of spaced-apart vertical pins.
3. A device for manipulating the sheets of a loose leaf binder comprising a base memher having a series of projecting pins, a top member formed with openings at one edge from one side thereof a distance corresponding to the parallel distance apart a series of openings are arranged from the post-attaching openings on said sheets, a top member and means for pivotally connecting said members at one end of the device to permit vertical and horizontal swinging movements of the top member relative to the base.
5. A loose leaf having a series of slotted post-attaching portions, said portions in-' cluding a circular opening and a slit extending from the binding edge to said opening and a second series of openings parallel with the series of openings of said slotted portions and adapted to receive the corresponding spaced pins on a sheet-manipulating device.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
HENRY SCHOOLBERG.
