To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RALPH L. AK1Ns,a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Single-Hinged Removable Covers for Books, &c. and I do hereby de-' clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in covers for memorandum or note books, but is also in the nature of a removable cover for books of any kind or for news papers, blotters, and the like.

The invention has for its primary object to provide adetachable cover for books, blotters, newspapers, 850., the construction of which is such as to enable the quick removal of the cover from the book,'blotters, or the like when it has served its purpose and to supply the cover with a new book or blotters, &c.

A further object of this invention is to pro vide a hinge connection 'for the covers of books, &c., to permit of the cover-sections and the leaves of the book to be opened to their fullest extent and also obviating the danger of the cover-sections becoming detached from the contents between them at the joint of connection with'constant use, as is so often the case where the cover-sections are directly attached to the leaves of the book, and a further object is to simplify the general arrangement and construction of the parts.

The invention therefore consists in the novel construction of cover or backing for books, blotters, newspapers, &c., hereinafter set forth, and also in a novel construction of hinge-joint to be used in connection with the cover-sections of the book, Ate.

The invention furthermore consists in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several parts of the device, all of which will be fully described in the accompanying specification, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a face view of the cover embodying the leading features of my present invention and operatively connected with the fastening devices connected with the leaves of a book. Fig. 2 is a view of the hinge connection and back view of the connected coversections, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the cover-section and a book therebetween. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of one of the hingejoints, taken on line :1; in Fig. 2 and on a slightly-enlarged scale. Fig. 5 is a view of the connected portions of the cover-sections and book, the cover-se'ctionsbein g represented open, but the book itself being closed; and Fig. 6 is a viewof the book opened at the middle and attached between the cover-sections. Fig. 7 represents in perspective view the several detachable parts of the cover-sections and a book being indicated in about the positions when these parts are to be connected to form the hinge-joint at the back edge of the cover and book.

Similar letters of reference are employed in all of the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

In said drawings, b indicates the book proper, comprising the leaves b, which are bound together at the middle in the usual manner by thread-stitching or wire fasteners.

Said bound leaves of the book, as will be seen from Figs. 4 and 6, are provided with two or more slotted or other suitable openings 6 through which are passed the holding loops or eyes 0' of suitable fastening devices, as c, in such a manner that the oppositely-extending ends 0 of each fastener will stand at right angles to the opening 12 as indicated in dot ted outline in Fig. 6, with the loop or eye 0' approximately parallel to the opening 21 After the devices 0 have thus been arranged in the openings 12 each fastener is turned to cause the loop or eye c to stand at a right angle directly across the opening I) on the back of the book and the ends 0 standing approximately parallel with the opening (7 whereby each fastener c is securely connected to the book I) in the manner as will be clearly evident from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings. The said fasteners c are preferably made of wire, the loop 0' being formed directly back of the twisted part c of the wire, from which the ends 0 extend; but of course it will be evident that said fasteners need not be made of wire and may be stamped from sheet metal and properly bent into shape, or they may be made in any other well-known manner.

The cover, which is preferably to be detachably connected with the book I), is made in two parts or sections a and a, preferably of a plastic material, as celluloid; but metal plates may be employed whenever desired, or said cover-sections may be of papiermach or any other suitable material. Said section a is formed at one edge with suitably-curled portions a while the other section a is formed with a curled portion a which latter curled portion can be placed in the space formed between the curled portions (L2 of the section a, with aslight space, as at, between the edges of the curled portions a and (1 as clearly illustrated. These parts of the coversections a and a are arranged in this manner against the back and bound edge of the book I), (see Fig. 3,) so that the loops or eyes 0 of the fastening devices will extend into said spaces a between the said curled parts a and a A suitable pin or rod cl is then inserted through the curled parts of the cover-sections a and a and through said loops or eyes 0, and in this manner the book-cover is operatively connected to the book I). The said pin 61 can be readily withdrawn from said curled parts a and (t and the loops or eyes 0, whereby the parts become separated, and a new book I) or a series of newspapers or blot- .ters or the like provided with fastening devices 0 can be secured together and connected with the sections a and a of the cover. It will be evident that the said cover-sections a and a may be provided with any desirable number of curled parts or portions a and a respectively, and any desirable number of such fastening devices 0 may be employed; but the number of curled portions and fastening devices shown herein is sufficient to provide a simple and cheap as well as an ornamental cover for books, blotters, 850.

From an inspection more particularly of Figs. a and 5 it will be evident that a hinge connection has been provided which permits of the book being opened to its fullest extent at the back, thereby insuring the use of the book with greater comfort and preventing the tearing or breaking of the cover at the hinge-joint.

By my novel arrangement of the several parts as hereinabove described the cover can be detachably secured to a book, 850., or it can be permanently secured to the book, as will be evident.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A backing or cover for a book, blotters, papers, &c., comprising, a pair of cover-sections having curled portions, in combination, with a holding device or devices having a holding loop or loops, and a pin or rod adapted to be arranged in said curled portions of the cover-sections and said loop or loops of the holding device or devices, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A backing or cover for a book, blotters, papers, &c., comprising a pair of separate cover-sections,- and means connected with the back of said book, blotters, or the like, pivotally connected with the pin or pintle of the hinge parts of said cover-sections, consisting of fastening devices 0 having holding loops or eyes 0, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. The combination,with a book or the like, having a fastening device provided with a holding loop or eye projecting from the back of the book, of a pair of hinged cover-sections to and a, said section or having curled portions a and said section a a curled portion a said curled portions being adapted to be arranged in alinement with each other, and a pin or pintle arranged in the curled portions of said cover-sections and said loop or eye of said fastening device, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. The combination ,witha book or the like, having fastening devices provided with holding loops or eyes projecting from the back of the book, of a pair of hinged cover-sections a and a, said section a having curled portions a and said section a a curled portion a said curled portions being adapted to be arranged in alinement with each other,with the said holding loops or eyes arranged between the abutting edges of said curled portions of the cover-sections, and a pin or pintle arranged in said curled portion of the coversections and said holding loops or eyes, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. The combination,with a book or the like provided with slits 17 of fastening devices 0 arranged in said slits, having holding loops or eyes 0 and oppositely-extending ends 0 said loops or eyes projecting from the back of the book, and a pair of hinged cover-sections (1 and a, said section at having curled portions a and said section a, a curled part a said curled parts being adapted to be arranged in alinement with each other, with the said holding loops or eyes arranged between the abutting edges of said curled parts of the cover-sections, and a pin or pintle arranged in said curled parts of the cover-sections and said holding loops or eyes, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
