HINGE MECHANISM FOR BNDER COVERS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed September 19, 1921. 'Serial No. 501,525.
T all whom it 'may concern.:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM l. PITT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State ot' Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hinge Mechanism lor Binder Covers and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hinge mechanisms tor binder covers and the like. lt is particularly well adapted for hinging covers ot' loose leai' binders or books.
One of the objects ot my invention is to provide a hinge mechanism which is imple, cheap to make, durable and strong and not liable to get out of order.
A further object ot my invent-ion is to provide a novel pintle barrel for au cover combined with cheap and etiicient means for securing the same to the. cover.
Still another object of my invention is to provide `a novel pintle having means which permits its insertion into a. barrel but which holds the pintle from withdrawal accidentally.
The novel features ot my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. l is a plan view, partly broken away and partly in section of a binder member and cove-r connected' together with my improved hinge mechanism.
Fig. 2 is perspective view ot one or" the caps and pintle mounted in the barrel thereof.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3 3 ot Fig. 1.
Fig. 4- is a. perspective view partly broken away and partly in section of one ot the covers.
Fig. 5 is a plan view, partly broken away and partly in section ot a binder member and cover provided with a modification of my invention.
Fig. 6 is a cross section on the line 6--6 ot Fig. 5.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates a clamping member of a. loose leaf binder having tted' on its ends respectively two caps 2, preferably of metal and provided each at one side with a pintle barrel 3.
4; designates the body ot a cover having in its inner end edge `a groove 5 in which is mounted a pintle barrel 6 disposed between and alining with the barrels 3.
7 designates two pintles which extend respectively through the barrels 3 and linto the cover barrel 6. The latter is secured in `operative position by a sheet ot binding` material 8, which embraces the barrel 6 and is secured to opposite sides ot the body 4.
Each pintle 7 may be provided at its outer end .with a head which bears against the adjacent barrel 3. Each pintle 7 is provided with an `annular peripheral shoulder 9 disposed near the inner end of the pintle, the latter being, preferably, tapering. The barrel 6 isv provided with two inwardly extending projections comprising, preferably, resilient tongues 10 which are adapted to respectively engage the outer sides of the shoulders 9 tor holding the pintlestrom accidental withdrawal from the barrels in which they are located. The shoulders 9 vare preferably formed by cutting in the pintle any annular recess 11, which forms an inwardly tapering portion on the pintle and which at its inner end terminates in the abrupt shoulder 9.
rllhe tongues l0 lare preferably formed by heilig punched inwardly from the barrel 6; V
In assembling the parts, the caps 2 having been applied to the binder member l, and the barrel 6 having been mounted in the inner end of the cover. as described, the cover is applied to the binder member l with the barrel 6 alining with the barrels 3, after which the pintles 7 are slipped re spectively through barrels 3 into the barrel 6. W'hen the heads ot the pintles bear against the barrels 3, the shoulders 9 will have passed inwardly beyond the tongues 10 respectively. The tongues 1() will spring into the recesses 11, and' by engaging the shoulders 9 will hold the pintles 7 from accidental withdrawal.
lVith the employment ot my invention, a considerable saving may be'efected in ma.- terial tor making the pintles, and riveting oi the ends of the pintle is dispensed with.
lin Figs. 5 and 6, I have illustrated a modied form of cover barrel comprising vided with inwardly extending projections 13 which enter the body el. for more securely holding the member l2 on the body l. rlhe binder member l is provided with a cap 2 at each end liavinfr the pintle barrel 3 through which extends the adjacent pintle i', in the manner already described. The
I do not limit my invention Vto the structure shown and described, :is many modifiycations, within the scope ot the appended Claims may be made without departing trom the spirit of my invention.
Vilhat I claim is:-
1. In a device of the kind described, two members, one having a pintle barrel, the other being a cover member provided with a body, a barrel mounted on the body at one end thereot and binding material embracing the last named barrel and secured to opposite sides of the body, the cover barrel having an inwardly extending projection, and a pintle mounted in said barrels and having a peripheral kshoulder against the outer side ot' which said projection is adapted to bear, substantially as set forth.
ln a deviceof the kind described7 a member having at one end a cap having at one side pintle barrel, a cover member having at one end a barrel provided with an inwardly extending projection, and a pintle mounted in said barrels and having a peripheral shoulder against the outer side or' which said projection is adapted to bear, substantially as set forth.
53. In a device or' the kind described,
two members one having a pintle barrel, the other being a cover member having a body, a. pintle barrel at one end ot' the body, and binding material embracing the last named barrel and secured to the body, and a pintle in said barrels having an annular peripheral shoulder, thc cover barrel having' a resilient inwardly extending tongue adapted to bear against the outer side ot said shoulder, substantially as set t'orth.
e'. In a device ot the kind described, a member having at one end a cap having at one side a pintle barrel, a cover member having a body, a pintle barrel at one end of sa'd body, and binding material embracing the last named barrel and secured to the body, and a pintle in said lbarrels having` a peripheral shoulder, the cover barel having a resilient inwardly extending tongue adapted t-o bear against the outer side ot said shoulder, substantially as set torth.
5. ln a device ot the kind described, a member having at opposite ends respectively two caps each having at one side a pintle barrel, a cover member having at one end a barrel between and aiining with said barrels, the cover member barrel having two inwardly extending resilient tongues, and two pintles extending respectively through the. irst two barrels and into the cover barrel, each pintle having a peripheral. shoulder, the two tongues being adapted to bear respectively against the outer sides ot' said shoulders, substantially as set forth.
6. in a device ot the kind described, a leaf-clamping member having' at one longitudinal edge a pintle barrel, a cover member adapted for swinging relationship to said clamping member and having at one edge a pintle barrel in alinement with the pintle barrel of the clamping member, and a pintle adapted to be mounted in one oiz said barrels and adapted for insertion in the other pintle barrel, the latter having means arranged to engage the pintle to hold the pintle from withdrawal therefrom, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
