BOOK
Application mea october so, 1931. serial No. 571,948.
My invention relates to books and particularly to those of the binder type. An important feature of my improvements is that the leaves orsheets which go in the case or binder are first secured together as a unit in a group or set and may be removed from the binder and replaced by a new unitary group or set of leaves, thus permitting the repeated use of the same binder or case with dierent unitary sets of leaves. Another important feature of the invention is the construction and arrangement by means of which the binder and unitary set of leaves may be put together and also taken apart or separated from each other, by sliding connections between the two elements. Another important feature of thev invention is that the unitary set of leaves are releasably attached to a carrier, which is itself detachably mounted in the binder, and and that the set of leaves are attached to the carrier by flexible means. There are other advantages of importance derived from the use of my improvements which will'appear from the detailed description of the same hereinafter set forth in connection with the illustrations of the structure.
I have illustrated a type of my invention in the accompanying drawing, wherein;
Figure 1 shows a view in perspective of a book embodying my improvements-the book being shown as open. V
Figure 2 shows a view in perspective of the book in open condition with the unitary set of leaves moved out of the binder a slight distance on its sliding connections.
Figure 3 shows a view on an enlarged scale of a cross-section of the book, 'the plane of the section being indicated by line 3 3, in Fig. 2.
Figure 4 shows a view of a longitudinal section taken on a plane through the back part l of the book, as indicated by the line 4--4, in
Fig. 2, the View being enlarged.
Referring to the drawing, the case of the book comprises the boards or sections 1 and 2, which are hingedly connected with the back 3` which unites the said parts. Secured within the back 3, by means of glue or otherwise, is a rigid member or holder 4, which is arched on its outer face where it is 4in contact with back 3, and is flat on its inner face to one edge or `margin of which'is glued a sheet of suitable material, such as linen fabric 5, which material is carried over upon the inner face of the adjacent board 1, and glued or pasted thereto. A similar sheet of material 6, is like-wise applied -to the opposite edge of holder 4, and attached to the other board 2. In this way the holder is immovably attached to the back. v
The holder 4, is provided with a central longitudinal groove 7, having undercut or overhanging sides. At the upper end of groove 7, is a stop 8, for preventing the leaf carrier 9, from being slid out of the holder 55 at the upper end. The fabric sheet 5, which is secured to the holder 4, is brought around over the upper end of the same and also the back 3, is brought over upon the end of holder 4, and both materials secured thereto by ad- 7 hesive substance, as will be understood from Fig. 4. The material 3, of theback is also brought around the lower end of holder 4, at 10, to cover the same, as shown in Figi. 1, thus wholly concealing the material of which the holder is made and giving a finished appear ance to the same.
The leaf-carrier 9, is somewhat narrower than the holder 4, on which it is mounted to slide longitudinally by means of the central longitudinal rib or tongue 11, the opposite sides of which are undercut so as to lit within the groove 7 ,of the holder 4, and be adapted to slide on each other, there being suflicient friction in the sliding joint to keep the carrier somewhat securely in the holder and prevent accidental separation of the two. Normally the lower end of the carrier is substantially flush with the lower end of its carrier, when the upper end of the carrier is forced against the-sto 8, the parts being left free so that the carrler may be slid endwise out of its holder from the lower end, when .demounting the carrier and leaves.
The leaves or sheets of material 12, are cut to size and at'their inner. or binding edges are secured to each other by an adhesive which is spread along thev margins, as indicated at 13, in Fig. 3.' Several holes 14, are punched or bored through the inner ends of the leaves as indicated in the drawing, and a flexible piece or cord 15, is passed through the respective holes and also through correspondingly located holes 16, formed transversely 1n the body of the carrier 9, and the two ends of these cords are then tied tightly together, as at 17, so as to securely attach the group or set of leaves or layers 12, to the carrier. This provides an easily releasm able flexible attaching means for the leaves A and makes a unitary structure which may be handled as such.
In order to conceal the sides of the carrier and also the attaching cords of the set of leaves, I provide at each side of the carrier a Hap consisting in a stii piece or core 18,
over which is asted flexible material 19, so
as to cover bot sides of the free portion of .o vice is especially 'useful in connection with the industry in which oups or bunches of samples of cloths or fa rics are furnished to the trade at different seasons of thev year. In this trade it has heretofore been the cus- 85 tom to make up a book with the set of sample pieces bound in a case or cover, and when the samples become Vuseless or get out of season, the entire book was thrown away so that the case was a complete loss and to that extent reason, the old cases or covers were generally made of a poor quality to reduce the cost of production, and they did not present a pleasing a pearance. This drawback is now overcome y the use of my device, as I preserve the case or binder, as well as the leafcarrier, so that both of them can be used repeatedly bv detaching the carrier with the old samples, then inserting a new set of samles in the carrier and replacing the latter 1n thebinder. This permits the employment of a binder or case of a fine quality and attractive appearance, as the initial cost of the binder is spread over a large number of repeated uses of the same. When a new set of samples is desired by the sample user, he may return to the party furnishing the samples, eitherthe entire book with the samples, or he may detach the leaf-carrierwith its samples and return that part,y which latterA can be sent back to himwithv a new set of samples secured therein for him to insert in the binder or case which he has retained. This latter arrangementA simplifies the transac- 66 tion andsaves transportation of the case it- `as not limiting my improvements to this parthis scheme has proved wasteful. For this self. Because of the facility thus affordedl the sample trade by use of my device, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a clothsample binder, but I wish to be understood 7o ticular use, as it is evident that other applications may be made of my invention, wlthl out, however, departing from the spirit of my invention. l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is; i

In a device ofthe class described, a case or binder, a leaf-carrieiuprovided with transverse perforations, a set of l leaves formed with transverse holes registering with each other, and flexible releasable attaching members extending through said perforations of the carrier and said holes in the leaves for securing the same together, and means arranged in the back of said case for detachably mounting the carrier thereon.
2. In a device of the class described, a case or binder, a leaf-carrier for retaining a set of leaves as a unit, releasable attaching means disposed transversely of said carrier for retaining the leaves therein, a holder secured in the back of said case for releasably holding said carrier, and a Hap disposed at each side of said carrier and secured thereto for covv ering said sides and concealing said leaf-attaching means.
